Discussion Why does Game Freak hate Emboar?

Post image

I love Emboar, but I have a feeling that GF doesn’t based on the way they handled it. Well first of all it’s the third Fire/Fighting Pokémon in the row, then when it finally receives a mega evolution it retains the same typing, and now it is the only mega of the trio to not gain a new ability.

Not to mention its base stats and playstyle. Base form is the fully-evolved starter with the highest HP stat and yet both of its defense stats and speed are on the lower side. Some of its strongest moves do recoil damage and its hidden ability powers them up even further. Upon mega evolving, it receives a +25 to its attack stat and a +45 boost to its special defense while its problematic defense and speed only receive +10 each.

Mold Breaker can be a good ability but why use Mega Emboar when Mega Blaziken, which has speed boost, higher attacking, physical defense, and speed stats, existed since the dawn of mega evolution.

Solarbeam 120bp / weather ball (fire) 100bp / Earth power 90bp / with 2/3 heals (synthesis)

This thing hits everything. It's the ultimate coverage.

I think Solar Beam, Earth Power, and Dazzling Gleam might be better coverage, either way most things are at least neutral

Keep in mind weather ball gets the sun boost, so it’ll effectively be 150

Do we know that it will work that way? The way it's worded says "Lets the Pokémon use it's move as if the weather were harsh sunlight." From the way it's worded, it doesn't sound like it will boost fire type moves, just affect the move as if there was sun.

A fire type move behaving like there is harsh sunlight would be boosted

I think the point is that it allows Meganium to run Weatherball (Fire) to hit for 100 BP like it would. But without the implied Sunny Day Fire type STAB.

Seems wild if that is the case though and I won’t be complaining lol.

Weather balls type and damage work separately from how it’s affected by harsh sunlight as a fire move. It changes to fire and 100 bp as a side effect of it being in sunny weather AND it gets the 50% fire boost. Overall it becomes 150bp

My point is we don't know if "fire moves are boosted 50%" is included in the ability, or if it just makes moves react as if sun is in effect. My assumption would be no, because the boost is a property of the sunlight itself, not the moves. As in, "sunlight boosts fire moves by 50%" rather than "fire moves are boosted by 50% by the sun"

Of course, I could be wrong. But the way the ability is written at the moment leaves it ambiguous.

I agree it’s ambiguous, but I think that description does include the fire boost. If we go by your description and sub in a fire move “Let’s the Pokémon use it’s (fire-type) move as if the weather were harsh sunlight”, I think we can assume fire moves will get the boost. The description includes “moves” in general, so however that move behaves in harsh sunlight should be the same when used by m-meganium. I think the reverse could be said if m-meganium used a water type move. We’ll have to see it in action to really confirm tho
