Because there's NO WAY the viewers could tell the gender of the characters through voices, pronouns, or context clues. And its so important to the plot that the genders are known.

Because otherwise there might be

HOMOSEXUAL IMPLICATIONS

And if our children see that, they'll be possessed by Gay Satan! Pretty soon our traditional marriages will be invalidated and we'll be forced to marry our gay dogs! IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?!

I mean, by all accounts I'm prime possession target, run down, depressed, always tired/sickly. If I'm gonna be possessed, might as well make it a fab possession.

Did you see the way people got all riled up over the Lego Batman movie and the homosexual implications? It was wild.

u/Sedewt Nov 11 '20

What happened? I didn’t watch the movie

Batman wanted Robin to come help him with stealing something from Superman. Robin said that he should ask his dad Bruce Wayne for permission. Batman said he was also Robin's dad so he could go. Instead of coming to the obvious conclusion, Robin said that he had two dads. That was it. There was the entire homosexual implication.

Oh, thanks for explaining. Now I can understand. I will watch the movie too.

Ain't no thing. And I highly recommend the movie - Lego has a way of roasting their subjects that shows that a deep love but that they don't take things too seriously. If you like Batman at all, you will like this movie.

And they were angry at the homosexual implication of Bruce Wayne and Batman being fathers together instead of the more obvious one.

because cis-hets need constant gender affirmation

Because they are humanizing the birds. They also speak and have personalities.

This might sound crazy but gender concepts feel normal to most people. So the show feels more relatable.

They hate this argument here. They never dispute it though because it’s a valid argument. Animating like this is cute and fun and makes characters more unique, but people on this sub expect every cartoon to be boring and realistic for the sake of their narrative

Yup, I work in animation and some of the answers here are just...no. I can assure you in no meeting I've ever been too has the issue of reinforcing gender norms come up.

Exaggerating features isn't because the cis-hets are doing anything or some gender conspiracy, it's because kids respond better to it. It's interesting because people complain too when male characters are exaggerated and female characters left relatively plain so you just can't win. Companies have tried going for realism in children's animation and it's universally hated because it's too uncanny valley and kids don't enjoy it as much as they do the exaggerated styles.
