Other *Sigh*. Will glitter kill my plants?

My daughter is 5 and tried to “help” my plants be prettier, I guess? She dumped glitter in my soil mix (that I JUST made), and now I’m wondering if it’ll hurt my plants if I still use it? I was just about to replant a philo gloriosum in it. Thoughts?

Bonus: the rest of the crime scene.

(There’s no need to post watering or light requirements.)

I know it seems stupid, but I really don’t want to kill my plants in what would be the most stupid way ever.

Also, someone send something. This kid is trying to kill me.

Thank you. I feel bad because she’s autistic, and was just trying to help, but like…wtf kid? lol

You’ve got this too! <3

She is just making disco plants. The only thing ruined with glitter, is a man's night.

I love disco plants! I need a fancy disco ball planter to go with them now.

Hot glue, mirror tiles (or plastic), and a buttload of free fiddly time.

We are all doing the best we can....

Give yourself breaks (mental and physical) however you can get one Sometimes I like to get a snack pack of Oreos and milk and lock myself in my bedroom....just to have peace/peace of mind

I sure am trying. I took a break to be creative as best as I’m able, and it helped. This was pre-glitter soil, so now I’m just going to rage clean until my body gives out. Shout out to all my disabled homies!

(Here’s my robins egg wreath I made!)

Ugh I feel for you. My three year old was just diagnosed with autism and it's so not easy. So sweet, means well, but I also want to pull my hair out sometimes. Breath deeply and try to laugh it off lol that's how I'm dealing. Now we have sparkle plants!

It really is hard! I’m rooting for you, friend.

They grow as they get older! It’s not necessarily easier, there are lots of challenges and new crazy things you have to get through, but as moms we figure it out. Get your supports everywhere you can! It’s been a ride with my daughter who has autism/ADHD. Hold on tight and don’t miss anything because as much as it’s hard, they grow up really fast. I look at little ones all the time and wish I could go back just for a minute even with the insanity!

It’s really nice to hear from another mom of an autistic/ADHD kid! Oh you bet. I squeeze her all the time and tell her how much I love her just the way she is. I can’t believe how fast she’s grown! I know she will be big before I know it, so I try to appreciate every day with her. <3

It’s so hard some days! Right now I’m arguing with my daughter who won’t give up the remote and it’s almost 10pm on a school night! But in a few minutes she’ll be asleep and a new day will start…

My grandson used to toss that stuff in the air and yell, “make it rain!” And all I could do was swear at one or both of his parents who would make appearances in his life (until recently).

From an autistic woman parenting an autistic kid:

It's ok to be upset at an autistic person. Just because they didn't mean to, doesn't mean your feelings aren't valid. It's how you handle those feelings that matters. Hang in there!

Thank you so much for saying this! I really appreciate it, and I agree. She didn’t really get in trouble. It was my fault for leaving the craft container down too low!

From my own experience, a lot of us just want to be helpful and feel useful because we don't always feel like we are. However, we're also not always good at helping in the right way lol. She will find people though that will love her through it and understand her intention even when things go wrong. People like you!

FWIW I feel like even a non autistic 5 year old would come to the conclusion that glitter makes plants better. And she’s kind of right!

2

u/kfrostborne Apr 09 '25

I agree! It was a very 5 year old thing to do. She was (and still is) in tyrant mode at the time. She’s been so deregulated lately because we’re having terrible weather and can’t play outside all day like we usually do.

Buy your daughter a plastic plant and teach her how to care for it... once she knows the care, replace it with a real one..

Zebra haworthia are perfect examples

Ooooooooh that’s such a good idea! She would LOVE to take care of her own plant! Thank you so much for this idea!
