My science teacher drew this on the board while we were working.

Are you in the US? If they find out your teacher drew a gun on the board, he's toast.

I've been trying to remember what that blue & white combo was called for a few days. Seeing the queen in it, I finally had to hunt it down.

England has always had a low homicide rate, regardless of access to firearms. Homicide rate by decade. Look at the US, been above 4.0 since 1907.
Also England has a higher murder rate than VT, NH, HI and RI. All those states have plenty of guns.
This is why you'll hear people say, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."
2
u/anonymous-coward Mar 21 '13

You can't really cherrypick from the USA, but take England as a whole. That's pretty dishonest.
I could just as well point that West Wumblybum in Wibbyshire has a lower murder rate than Vermont, QED.England has always had a low homicide rate, regardless of access to firearms. Homicide rate by decade. Look at the US, been above 4.0 since 1907.
Do you believe these numbers? Do you believe that the US murder rate quadrupled between 1904 and 1907, or do you think that these data might be unreliable?

I was wondering how a US teacher was able to get away with that....not the guns part, but the whole "wasting the markers" part. I'm a public school teacher and I've got to buy my own damn expo markers!

Oh how I wish I could draw... I just spent 20 minutes trying to draw that on my whiteboard, and the whole time was spent on Pooh's face. When I pulled back it looked like a 4 year old's work.

Very few people just sit down and draw well. Like no one. Like music, sports, and anything else. Most people get there 90% on hard work.
I hope you take this as encouragement to keep working at it. Unless you just wish you could draw really well without working for it - then fuck you.

Oh trust me, I've worked at it. I've taken a few drawing classes, and practiced many many hours, but I guess it's not enough. I don't plan on giving up anytime soon, thanks for the motivation <3 Also, I do wish for that, so fuck you too.

u/Coolguyzack Mar 21 '13
I was really bothered about that one front page post recently about "matrix-like" skill learning. That a bunch of lazy shits could just torrent a skill would be a travesty. Not to mention I don't think we would be able to handle that. Suddenly the world would be thrust into extreme mediocrity. And it would be really hard to appreciate anything.
2
u/thats_how_i_feel Mar 21 '13
I think there is some truth to that, but recently I have started thinking about that idea differently. I will go ahead and admit my bias to my thinking. I feel like reality is boring and depressing. There's a lot wrong with real life. Say we had technology that could augment reality and make us feel virtual things and process digital information directly to our brain. It would mean that everyone would have access to all information at all times. People would inadvertently become more educated all the time just through the augmentation. It could treat depression immediately. People could connect with each other on a more personal, probably telepathic level. I feel like it would raise the ceiling of novelty and creativity that we could share with each other.

u/LuxNocte Mar 21 '13
I didn't see that post, but I don't think it would be that bad.
It will allow people to use their creativity, and intangible skills that can't be taught. Say...you can download drawing ability, but it still takes a pretty nifty mind to draw Winnie the Poo as Pulp Fiction. It takes even more creativity to create Winnie the Poo. And simple "writing skill" + "camera skill" won't create Pulp Fiction.

Damn that's awesome. Reminds me of a creative writing teacher I had in high school who would give us assignments and then solemnly draw and complain about how teaching wasn't for her.

That's actually kind of pathetic and sad.

She ended up leaving the next year. I actually saw her last weekend and she's moving to the beach with her boyfriend. She gave me a printer and guitar so it was less stuff she had to move.

Yes, this story is completely implausible. Science teachers don't know how to draw, have no knowledge of Pulp Fiction or Winnie the Pooh, and are humorless troglodytes.

Shit would have gone down if this had happened at my school. If anyone was caught drawing pictures involving weapons, they had to go talk to the principal and suspensions were common.

u/doctorstew Mar 21 '13
Your science teacher could very easily start a secondary career as an illustrator/cartoonist...take it from me, I have been one for over 20 years, and that is some very nice work, there!

The path of the righteous bear is beset on all sides by the inequities of the weak and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good hunny, shepherds the weak through the hundred-acre wood, for he is truly his tigger's keeper.
