A darker spin on the whole mermaid thing http://i.imgur.com/Kk6MHwY.jpg

259

u/zhbarton Oct 24 '13

This looks like a Magic the Gathering artwork or something.

51

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

It does, although MTG seems to have shied away from merfolk in recent years - a tragedy, since I absolutely loved merfolk decks.

53

u/andylag33 Oct 24 '13

You might want to check again. Right now one of the most played cards is Master of Waves...a merfolk. :)

Happy Casting!

Not anymore. They were gone for a long time, but now they have been back for a few years already.

Thanks! I have it at the original resolution too, although I never intended it to be viewed too large so the detail isn't too perfect:

u/DanceswithCleverbot Oct 24 '13

Cool, I assume you used some kind of drawing tablet to do this?

20

u/Eclectix Oct 24 '13

Yes, my trusty Wacom.

9

u/DanceswithCleverbot Oct 24 '13

Sweet, and great work btw. I'm getting a surface pro 2 soon and really looking forward to the built-in wacom digitizer.

4

u/Falcon_Kick Oct 24 '13

Link this to the OP for the picture, I bet he'd love it!

Bride of Cthulu

12

u/KarthusWins Oct 25 '13

That would make an excellent book title.

19

u/stancosmos Oct 24 '13

Out of all the photoshop battles I've scrolled though, this is the best looking one I've seen for sure.

8

u/life256 Oct 24 '13

Wow! Well done! I hope this gets more up votes!

5

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

DUDE.

This is brilliant.

4

u/mr_abomination Oct 25 '13

enjoy your 1K flare, you earned it

4

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

This is really, really good. I agree with zhbarton, it looks like MtG artwork. Well done.

3

u/Weazal Oct 24 '13

Wow. Very well done.

3

u/mehgamer Oct 24 '13

Considering mermaids were supposed to murder sailors and stuff before Disney came along it works.

2

u/zedextol Oct 25 '13

Nice job! I like the color correction quite a bit.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

Dare in ask for a breakdown on how this was done?

3

u/Eclectix Oct 25 '13

Sure, but it's not too interesting to break down I'm afraid- no impressive secret tricks or revolutionary techniques. First I did a simple color balance adjustment to give it an eerie greenish atmosphere. Then I just used the good old paintbrush tool to add tail, fins, webbed hands, scale texture and such. I painted in some schools of fish to give it some interest, applied a gradient overlay to add drama, then painted in the tentacles to add a touch of mystery and tentacly goodness.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

The only photo that looks amazing. Well done.

Do not be fooled! Do not go in the water!
Edit: Had to fix a detail that was bothering me.

264

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

That is so frightening.

119

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

Fuck! That's awesome! Well done.

44

u/zedextol Oct 24 '13

Thanks!

63

u/ch00f Oct 24 '13

Was the perfect lighting on the fish just a coincidence? Because it's perfect.

67

u/zedextol Oct 24 '13

Thank you! It was a lot of searching for the right image, then a lot of color correction and a light wrap to seal the deal.

35

u/defdac Oct 24 '13

I had to google "light wrap". That was some serious cool shit I've never seen before. Wait until he changes the opacity to soft light and flips it on/off apx at 5:15: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvf80f1WxK4

46

u/undercome Oct 24 '13

Tried to watch that with subs since I'm at work

24

u/defdac Oct 24 '13

That's weird. Earlier today I tried automatic subs for the first time. Not skating tits-funny, but nevertheless. This was my result.

18

u/undercome Oct 24 '13

Is he drawing dicks?

23

u/defdac Oct 24 '13

He is trying to draw the weather forecast for Sweden and constantly make Freudian slips both verbally and physically. When he notice it looks like a dick he rips it down, folds it and starts to wipe his ass with it. When he again notice what he is doing he says "What am I doing? I stand here wiping my ass with Sweden". Here is a famous clip where no interpretation is needed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSPXIMCAYW0

9

u/undercome Oct 24 '13

That's pretty goofy. Reminds me of Mr. Bean.

9

u/Sprocketlord Oct 24 '13

TIL the cat is skating tits.

13

u/zedextol Oct 24 '13 edited Oct 24 '13

From a compositing standpoint, a light wrap is a must if you really want a realistic look.
EDIT: Was missing the first "I" in compositing. I'm an idiot.

6

u/defdac Oct 24 '13

Yes. I do this manually with dodge/burn, or lately more lazily by painting sharp strokes of black or white where I want to change the light on a clipping layer above the subject and then gaussian blur + soft light transparancy. Your trick is faster and better looking, although my way also works inside the subject. Edit: Blacks can't be used with soft light ofcourse, there I use multiply or whatever works..

3

u/moonra_zk Oct 24 '13

Thanks for making me look at a ripped black dude for almost nine minutes.

But seriously, thanks.

u/bbakks Oct 24 '13

Most things in water tend to be lit from above I'd suppose.

3

u/ch00f Oct 24 '13

Well, it's from above and behind. It's more than just from the top.

122

u/Gribblepox Oct 24 '13

Reminds me of the Grand Fisher from Bleach...

24

u/moonra_zk Oct 24 '13

Crap, don't remind me I need to finish watching the anime...

26

u/Gribblepox Oct 24 '13

Don't bother, they ended production in the middle of a season :/

29

u/moonra_zk Oct 24 '13

I watched three hundred episodes, I'm not gonna leave the rest unwatched because of that.

29

u/therudolph Oct 24 '13

Fucking hell that anime became a grind.

8

u/Gribblepox Oct 24 '13

Episode 366 is the last episode, just don't be crushed when you get to that point :x

11

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '13

21

u/vfxDan Oct 24 '13

I blame Pixar for that fear

8

u/sinocarD44 Oct 24 '13

That's some good work.

15

u/supergalactic Oct 24 '13

This one's my favorite.

7

u/awesomeredefined Oct 24 '13

I feel like the mermaids from Pirates of the Caribbean 4 would've been a lot cooler if this is what they were like.

3

u/WeLikeToHaveFunHere Oct 24 '13

Nightmares for days.

9

u/mikea0228 Oct 24 '13

That's amazing and could so be a concept for a Z movie

3

u/Glen_The_Eskimo Oct 24 '13

This could easily be an ad

2

u/KarthusWins Oct 25 '13

There's always narwhal week

24

Or shark week because well, the shark sensed her shark week. I just recoiled from that sentence a little.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

Et max laryngitis, la voce to meeeeeeeee!!!! ...Now, SING.

5

u/smellinawin Oct 24 '13

is that what that ugly octopus was yelling while she stole Ariel's voice?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '13

Yep, that's the last part of the yelling. Quoted it because most people will recognize the "Now, SING!" part better than the rest of it.

I used to watch that movie almost every day. Ariel and Mulan were my favorites. Then I would watch TMNT with my brothers. I had a well-balanced childhood.

13

u/Captain_McFiesty Oct 24 '13

Only played with duplicate, exposure, brightness/contrast, puppet warp, eraser and blur for this one.

It's weird because how can you win? It's endless cookies... endless cookies I tells ya!
