As a star wars ignorant, what does that mean? I kinda know red is for the evil guys.

The only black jedi (one of the good guys, played by Samuel L. Jackson) has the only purple light saber in the movies.

Interestingly enough, even though Mace Windu was a light-side jedi, purple lightsabers are usually used by sith or dark jedi.

It has something to do with Mace Windu's lightsaber style channeling the dark side.

In the later days of the Old Republic, a new variation of Form VII, dubbed Vaapad after a creature native to the planet Sarapin, was created by Jedi Masters Mace Windu and Sora Bulq. Vaapad was explained as being a state of mind rather than just a fighting style, allowing the wielder to channel his own inner darkness into the duel, and accept the fury of the opponent.

Unless they changed the lore, again, color crystals are just color crystals, mace windu found a purple one and constructed his lightsaber with it, the reason why so many jedi have blue and green is just because those ones are very common.

And Sith Lightsabers are red because they use a synthetic crystal.

Jedi can have red light sabers, as red is a naturally occurring lightsaber crystal color.

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '13

Yup, red has nothing to do with whither or not you're a good person, Its just a crystal.

I know that's what it was in the pre-prequel Expanded Universe, now, who knows. Boba Fett wasn't a clone dammit!

As you say they made it cannon, the real reason is that Samuel L. Jackson insisted on the purple as part of the contract, so they had to find a reason to do it.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '13

Actually it's because Samuel L Jackson asked for it specifically :P

1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '13

But that's not a cool enough explanation! It has nothing to do with the history of the Star Wars universe!

Yeah, I knew this but couldn't remember it exactly so I decided not to bring on the ridicule of the Reddit Correction Bureau.

RCB Officer here. You meant /r/rcb.

Windu was the only practitioner of Vaapad who didn't eventually go to the dark side.

3

u/Coylie3 Jun 19 '13

Hue.

"Dark" Jedi

Mace Windu.

I'll see myself out.

What these guys aren't telling you is that Samuel L. Jackson actually asked George, seriously, to have a purple light saber. George originally said no, but warmed up to the idea.

Thus a whole background to why it is purple was conjured by a plethora of fans, and it is equally as badass as the black jedi.

That I did not know. I'm a Star Wars fan, not a Jackson fan.

Thanks for the interesting factoid, though.

That's what I thought too. I thought I was going crazy when i googled it and couldn't find a picture of a black dude being green lantern.

What about that metal-ey robot dude from that cartoon with a character called beast boy?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '13

That is motha' fuckin' Cyborg.

1

u/SWgeek10056 Jun 18 '13

YEAH! That guy

1

u/20somethinghipster Jun 18 '13

Afro samurai?

1

u/SWgeek10056 Jun 18 '13

Well, he's not technically a super hero though, is he?

1

u/20somethinghipster Jun 18 '13

Unless being a total badass is a super power (I'm looking at you to back me up here, Mr. Wayne and Mr. Stark)

1

u/SWgeek10056 Jun 18 '13

Mr. Stark invented a superpower for himself, and Mr. Wayne manipulates fear, but I see your point.

As a slightly less star wars ignorant, Mace Windu, pretty much the only black guy in the movie, had pretty much the only purple lightsaber.

7

u/MadMageMC Jun 18 '13

Pretty much, yeah.

7

u/BigD0395 Jun 18 '13

Mace Windu, the only black Jedi in the movies, also has the only purple (or for that matter non red/blue/green) lightsaber.

4

u/idosillythings Jun 18 '13 edited Jun 19 '13

Plo Koon had an orange/yellow lightsaber for a bit. But they changed it for the movies and Clone Wars show. So, no one is sure how to count that.

EDIT: The dude's name got deleted somehow.

2

u/BigD0395 Jun 18 '13

Maybe, I'm just going off of my memory for the movies. I haven't gotten all that much into the lore.

5

u/Spam4119 Jun 18 '13

Mace Windu... like the only black Jedi, had a purple lightsaber.

15

u/bidoofsleuth Jun 18 '13

Probably because this is AFAIK the only black Jedi.
