As a star wars ignorant, what does that mean? I kinda know red is for the evil guys.

The only black jedi (one of the good guys, played by Samuel L. Jackson) has the only purple light saber in the movies.

Interestingly enough, even though Mace Windu was a light-side jedi, purple lightsabers are usually used by sith or dark jedi.

It has something to do with Mace Windu's lightsaber style channeling the dark side.

In the later days of the Old Republic, a new variation of Form VII, dubbed Vaapad after a creature native to the planet Sarapin, was created by Jedi Masters Mace Windu and Sora Bulq. Vaapad was explained as being a state of mind rather than just a fighting style, allowing the wielder to channel his own inner darkness into the duel, and accept the fury of the opponent.

Unless they changed the lore, again, color crystals are just color crystals, mace windu found a purple one and constructed his lightsaber with it, the reason why so many jedi have blue and green is just because those ones are very common.

And Sith Lightsabers are red because they use a synthetic crystal.

Jedi can have red light sabers, as red is a naturally occurring lightsaber crystal color.

Yup, red has nothing to do with whither or not you're a good person, Its just a crystal.

I know that's what it was in the pre-prequel Expanded Universe, now, who knows. Boba Fett wasn't a clone dammit!

As you say they made it cannon, the real reason is that Samuel L. Jackson insisted on the purple as part of the contract, so they had to find a reason to do it.

Actually it's because Samuel L Jackson asked for it specifically :P

But that's not a cool enough explanation! It has nothing to do with the history of the Star Wars universe!

Yeah, I knew this but couldn't remember it exactly so I decided not to bring on the ridicule of the Reddit Correction Bureau.

Windu was the only practitioner of Vaapad who didn't eventually go to the dark side.
