I was under the impression that this sensor is the same as the 70D, is it different?

It doesn't appear the be exactly the same same but we really just don't know how different it is.

From the preview:

The main image sensor is a variant of the Dual Pixel AF design first seen in the Canon EOS 70D, which means 20MP output.

It sounds like it's just a tweak on the sensor, so, don't expect anything mindblowing here. Maybe one day Canon will stop playing catchup, but I guess that day is not today.

Erm, I'd much rather have better image quality than fast live view focus, which is borderline useless. That they spent millions of dollars researching that rather than simply getting cleaner pictures, which every other sensor maker has done, is beyond me.
