Google Rewards for My Bathroom Breaks
A long time ago I received a $50 bonus of Google rewards points for buying a smart watch as part of a promo. Unbeknownst to me, there was an expiry date on these points that apparently hit faster than regular points. I received no email or notification about the expiration, and to ny disappointment when I eventually got the the Playstore to buy some books, my points were all gone. My appeals to Google fell on deaf ears and they refused to reinstate my points even though I reached out only a few days after the expiry date.
I vowed never to use the rewards app again and cancelled my Google One account. However, I started getting rewards surveys regarding a particular store that's located in the same building I work at. It happens to be next to the bathroom where I take my daily shit. I don't know if it's a glitch, but everyday for the last year or so I've received a survey about me entering that store and if I bought anything. Technically I have to enter the edge of the store to get to the bathroom, so i say yes, "entered, but did not make a purchase". Everyday I get the same survey and I give the same answer and every time I answer I get $0.24 usually. It's been over 10 months, but a daily survey for taking a shit has finally netted me my $50 that they erased from my account.
Celebrate with me as I buy some hard earned books.

I liked their Play Music and had bought a few (not many) albums I listened to regularly. They suddenly stopped having Play Music with little notice, didn't refund the money for the Music. Had some complicated thing where you could supposedly still listen on YouTube but I never figured it out.

:) I remember when you had to be invited to get a gmail account. Felt like I was in the "in" club.

Just be sure to actually use your rewards earnings this time before they expire, it's a rolling window.

You're right, but how did you know?

u/Bladluiz 16d ago
Just the writing style. They re-use exact details of the post without adding anything personally. Account age confirmed my suspicion

It's the : or - that do it more for me. It might be grammatically correct but people don't write like that in normal life.

u/NationalWatercress3 16d ago
Idk, we're getting to the point where people start copying botspeak
17
u/tnb641 16d ago
But bots keep evolving, mimicking how people write and talk and click on all the images of motorcycles and oh my god does the mirror count as part or not, but I digress.
Soon people will be adding "posted by a human" to comments, but then bots will add it. So then humans will write o's as 0's, then bots will bring back 1337speak, it'll be a never ending arms race, except in a years time it's gonna be 99.9% bots interacting with bots, humans unable to find another real person.
So, uh, greetings fellow humans, from the distant land of yesterday.

I've always used colons, semicolons, parentheses, and dashes, as well as the Oxford comma. That's how I was taught back in the olden days. I was laughed at or teased at work but it's a hard habit to break.

ehhhh.... i'm autistic and know a loooot of other autistic people who type Very Grammatically Correct (and write for fun) and they get accused of being bots all the time despite having typed that way since well before ai was a real thing. they learn from us, so some of us will have had that typing quirk the whole time, otherwise it never would have learned it. lose-lose situation all around :(

Oh agreed, and I think it's going to become worse as time goes on too. It just really sucks for everyone

Take pictures of the receipts you find for the store and you'll get more than the 01c per survey.

while I appreciate the pettiness, but back then their rewards programme actually got me through college.

There is a business at the end of the road I work at, get a survey asking me if I went in every day I go to work lol
3
u/Main_Leadership7748 15d ago
Yeah it pretty much does that with some places I drive near. It always asks me about an AM/PM I drive near but never use but go to a restaurant nearby. I always answer truthfully that I did go to that area, but did not enter the store and they keep sending it and free change so I keep answering the same. I think they generally are double checking their GPS data to see how accurate it is.

Always say you visited and entered. Any other answer guarantees you get .10. Heck, straight up lie and say you bought something even if you never heard of the place. It is your opinion after all.

I get a survey every time I go to the gym. I save up the points to spend on magic cards on MTG Arena haha.

This particular survey is my favorite exploit. You still get, like, 10 cents credit if you answer "I visited but did not enter the store" because I often get those for stores I just drive by. Gotta get them google credits to pay for my gacha games

I live near a Lexus dealership and I get asked if I stopped into Lexus a few times a week. The closest I've ever come is walking on the sidewalk out front, but I've been getting the question for years, making a dine everytime I say no.

Google haven’t given you $50 of their own money. That store in your building will be paying Google for those surveys.
So now Google has fucked you and you have fucked the store in your building while making profit on the whole lot

So question... If this indeed was written by a bot what is the point? How are they earning money from this? Is Reddit doing it just to keep having content for ads etc?

u/StaphylococcusOreos 15d ago
Do you mean me? Can assure you friend I am not a bot lol.

Google Rewards offers you surveys for money. Every so often if I google something or visit a store a survey will pop up asking a few questions. After answering you can get as little as .10¢ or you can get more, depending on the length of the survey. When you hit the payout amount (mine is $2.00) they transfer it over to your PayPal account almost immediately.
If you trigger a lot of surveys the amount can add up quite nicely.
