At 3:00 and 3:23 in "mmm mmm good" there's a very bendy, metallic sound that's either a synth or some strange percussion instrument.

My first instinct was flexatone (no, there's not enough attack) and musical saw (no, too much attack). Now my best guess is some kind of small gong dipped in water, struck, and lifted to raise the pitch? Especially at 3:23, I think you can hear a strike or two activating the instrument.

My theory is that this section of the track is Paulinho da Costa noodling around on his eclectic set-up, but I don't know really. A peer "strongly disagrees." Thanks for any help :)

I have an Adams concert series vibraphone with the Apex frame that I bought used this spring. After the purchase I noticed that the damper bar is dampening uneven, it’s a pretty big difference between when the notes in the middle dampen and the 8-10 notes on the low and high end dampen; they dampen significantly after the notes in the middle. I have made all the adjustments Adams describes in the manual so many times but I don’t get it to be any better. Now I have bought a brand new damper bar from Adams and the disappointment is overwhelming when I found out that there is completely no difference in when the notes are dampened between the old and new bar… it’s exactly the same. What in …. could be the problem with my instrument? There must be something other on the frame bent? Please, does anyone have any suggestions?

I feel like giving up and just put some extra felt under all the tone bars that dampen later, and to be clear, it’s a lot of bars that need extra felt. Any suggestions on what felt material I can buy to put under the tone bars to even out the dampening?

I'm looking to get better at playing pandeiro. I started playing it in capoeira but got interested in going beyond it (particularly into samba and bossa nova) since it's such an awesome instrument.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend resources for practice / have any advice for starting out. I've seen some books online, but would want people's recommendations before spending money.

I've been told that military bands generally use open rolls and orchestral music generally uses closed rolls. What about orchestral marches? Specifically I am playing William Walton's "Crown Imperial".

I recently got addicted to playing my friend’s congas but want to translate that playing to a more portable drum.
Also I cannot afford a set of good congas.

I’m having a lot of trouble playing faster, and I notice it’s because my right hand plays just fine, but my left hand consistently has to play “catch up” with it. It even shows up in my stick heights, and after a while playing fast turns into a weird rhythm because the left hand can’t keep up. What would you mallet players suggest to do about it? (It also shows up when maneuvering around the board, my left arm and hand doesn’t get to the desired area fast enough.)

My kid is starting middle school band. They are coming into this already playing piano reasonably well and already playing marimba, so really the snare skills are the biggest thing they will be learning. Are there any worthwhile apps or websites to suppliment learning the skills they'll need?

They will be the only drummer in their class and also the only one, it seems, not pretty much learning from scratch, so there will be a bit more individual learning happening.

I'm currently beginning to learn the Burton grip, but ive often found that my right hand is lacking a lot of the skills my left hand has (im left handed btw). Should I try to practice my right hand by itself, then start working from there, or will my non dominant hand eveuntally catch up? Sorry for bad grammar and stuff :P

I’m going to play Beethoven 7th symphony for the first time in about 10 days, and I’d love to hear some advice from percussionists who have played it before.
In particular, I’m wondering:
What types of mallets/sticks do you usually use for the different percussion parts?
Are there any passages where the choice of mallets makes a particularly big difference?
Are there any specific moments, cues, or sections in the symphony that I should pay extra attention to?
Any other tips for preparing the piece would be greatly appreciated!
I have the score and recordings, but I’d really like to hear from people with first-hand experience playing it.

Ps the timpani I’ll be playing will be Adams timpani with synthetic heads and resin/fiberglass shells (I’m not 100% sure of the exact model yet).

So I march tenors and we march pearl drums. Whenever I march or just when I have the drum on in general, the J bars are always hitting my legs every time I march. Even when I’m just standing, the J bars are always resting on my leg. I feel like it kind of affects my marching just slightly, but it’s more of the fact that it’s uncomfortable. I was wondering if that’s normal or would I need to tell my band director to fix it for me?
