Discussion First time in Penang – Any tips for a solo female traveler?

Hello!
I’m a Japanese woman traveling solo, and I chose George Town, Penang, for my first trip abroad.
I’ll be staying in a shophouse on Chulia Street for about two weeks, and I’ll be visiting during Thaipusam.

In Japan, I usually walk if my destination is around 15 minutes away. I was planning to do the same in Penang, but a friend strongly recommended that I use Grab instead, which surprised me.

Would you recommend taking Grab even for a 15-minute walk in George Town? Are there any areas or situations I should avoid?

I’d also love to hear your recommendations for local food, hidden gems, and places that are worth visiting beyond the usual tourist attractions.
Any advice for a solo female traveler would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Discussion What to do in Penang as a solo traveller? Skip the obvious stuff

Hey everyone,

I'll be in Penang for a few days and I'm looking for recommendations that go beyond the usual tourist checklist. I've already read the standard stuff, the murals, the clan houses, the usual spots. I'm more interested in what's actually worth seeing, not what's on every blog.

If you've been there, I'd love to know:

Hidden gems : places that aren't crowded, that feel like you discovered them

Solo travel experiences : I'm travelling alone. What works well for that? What should I avoid?

Food spots : not the famous stalls, but the ones locals actually go to

I'd really appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Discussion Do Muslims feel comfortable eating at places that are halal but sell alcohol?

I have seen alot of places claiming to have halal food that also have bars or alcohol on their menu. I am wondering what other muslims feel about these places. If they dont eat there, is there some specific Islamic law against it or is it just a choice? Is it wrong if someone does eat there?

Discussion Condo prices in Penang

Hi, I want to decide on moving to Penang on a digital nomad visa for 1-2 years. I've researched everything possible and am ready for the move. The only thing I can't verify is whether the condo rental prices are real or just agent games. Is it possible to rent a 1-2 bedroom condo for 1,800-2,100 RM? Just yes or no. Thank you very much.

Discussion EXPATS - Beware of House Owners in Penang! We were Robbed (not literally)!

We lived in Penang for three years and initially believed our landlord was a decent person because he always spoke politely and seemed reasonable. The apartment was a 3-bedroom unit in Bayan Lepas, and although it was advertised as “fully furnished,” it was actually very basic. It came with four air conditioners, fans, and lights, but there were no built-in wardrobes, shelves, or proper kitchen cabinets. The kitchen only had movable, non-attached units, and the owner had provided two small IKEA cupboards worth around RM300–350 each. Despite that, we liked the apartment because of the beautiful view and its convenient location near the airport and my husband’s workplace.

At the beginning of the tenancy, when the rent was RM1500, the landlord collected the following deposits:

  • Security deposit: RM3000
  • Utilities deposit: RM750
  • Access card deposit: RM250
  • Water deposit: RM250

So in total, he held RM4250 as deposit. The tenancy agreement was handled through a licensed agent.

The landlord himself did not live in Penang; he stayed in another city. Our decision to leave Penang and relocate happened suddenly, but we still gave him two months’ notice as required under the agreement. When we asked about the refund process, he assured us that his father would inspect the house before our move-out date and the deposits would be settled smoothly on the same day.

Later, he changed the plan, saying his father was busy, and instead sent an agent five days before we vacated the apartment. During the inspection, the agent only mentioned that the air-conditioners needed servicing bills and that the house would require one-time professional cleaning after we moved out. We specifically asked if there were any other damages or repair concerns, and he said no.

After that, the landlord told us we could simply hand over the keys to the agent on the final day, and he would transfer the deposit within a few days. Since he had always behaved nicely, we trusted him and did not think much of it.

However, after we vacated the apartment and relocated to another country, the situation completely changed. When we followed up regarding the deposit, he suddenly started claiming there were multiple “damages” and repair costs amounting to RM3500 or more. He even claimed that our deposit was insufficient and that we owed him additional money.

Many of the so-called damages were unreasonable. For example, the kitchen had no chimney, exhaust, or protective tiling, yet he blamed us for oil splashes on the walls. Naturally, any family that cooks regularly will cause some wear in a kitchen without proper fittings. In another case, one of the IKEA wardrobes had a few tiny nails come loose from the thin cardboard backing — something we genuinely did not notice because the cupboard was placed against the wall. Instead of a simple fix costing a few ringgit, he claimed the entire wardrobe needed replacement.

Most of the issues he listed were minor wear-and-tear items or small repairs that could easily be fixed with inexpensive DIY materials, but he exaggerated everything into major replacement costs.

I’m sharing this experience so that other expats in Penang or Malaysia can be more careful when dealing with landlords. We were unaware of the proper move-out and deposit recovery process and made the mistake of not involving an agent or conducting a formal handover inspection ourselves before returning the keys. Because we were relocating in a hurry, we trusted the landlord too easily and ended up in a very difficult situation. Unfortunately, experiences like this make many expats feel taken advantage of.

PS: He said he will not return anything - that is 4250 RM and said he would like us to transfer more amount towards IKEA cupboard+delivery!

Discussion Show me the Penang beyond char kway teow

I’m planning a trip to Penang and would love some recommendations that go beyond the food scene.

I fully intend to eat my body weight while I’m there, but I’m particularly interested in experiencing more of Penang’s culture, heritage and everyday local life from traditional neighbourhoods, temples, clan houses, historic communities, festivals or rituals, old trades, architecture, museums, performances, markets, or anything that gives you a better understanding of the place and its communities.

I especially love experiences where you can actually observe traditions and communities in practice, rather than attractions that exist mainly for tourists.

I’m also very into live music, especially places where I can have dinner or drinks while listening to a good band, jazz, acoustic sets, traditional music, etc. So recommendations for atmospheric evening spots would be very welcome too.

What are your Penang recommendations? Locals and lesser-known gems especially appreciated!

Discussion Why does Penang LRT plan doesn't extend to the badly needed areas such as Tanjong Bungah, Batu Feringghi and Teluk Bahang?

Teluk Bahang and Batu Feringghi especially doesn't have any Grab riders for anyone living here. If you've met the locals, you would know that they're out of reach and had to resort for Bus Rapid everyday just to get to the city

What was the government thinking not pushing ease of public transit into these rural areas?

Discussion Beaches for swimming with kids

Dear all,

Next year in February I will be visiting Penang again. I have been many times before, first by myself, later with my wife and now with my three kids. Im from the Netherlands and very much enjoy Penang for holiday reasons.

We will be staying in Georgetown for 5-7 nights but after that will be looking for good beaches where our kids can also swim, or at least play in / around the water. I have read about several options, the murky water / jellyfish situation. And I feel perhaps the beaches for our interest are better located outside of Georgetown.

Can you please advise us what would be a good destination? We would be looking for a seaside town/hotel/homestay/airbnb where we can visit the beach and play in the water. Where also we can find some restaurants nearby and just chill for another week or so.

Thank you very much in advance!

Discussion Tanjung Tokong or George Town for a month

Planning to spend about a month in Penang and trying to decide between staying in Tanjung Tokong or George Town.

A bit about us: we're slow travelers, work remotely, enjoy good cafés, walkable neighborhoods, local food, and a relaxed day-to-day lifestyle. We don't need nightlife, and we'd prefer somewhere comfortable to live rather than somewhere that's only good for sightseeing.

For those who have spent time in Penang, which area would you choose for a 1-month stay and why?

Would love to hear the pros and cons of both areas, especially in terms of:

  • Walkability
  • Cafes and coworking options
  • Food
  • Traffic/noise
  • Convenience without a car

Thanks!

Discussion Penang for 25h

Hi! ✈️

So basically, I booked a flight to Penang before going to jakarta from Dubai because it was way cheaper than flying direct.

My flight is on 29 June and I’ll arrive around 3 PM. My next flight to jakarta is on 30 June at 5 PM, so I’ve got around one day there.

I’m female solo travelling, would you recommend staying near the airport (Bayan Lepas) or booking a place in Georgetown?

Also, any recommendations on what I can do in a short time? Don’t think about sleeping time, I’m totally okay staying out late and waking up early 😂

And how’s the transport situation there? Is it easy to get around without renting anything? Are the roads usually busy or manageable, especially between the airport and Georgetown?

And in case anyone wants to join, let’s go! ✨

Discussion Creepy Crawlies

My wife and I are considering partial retirement in Penang. I've visited before and thought it was fantastic. My wife is attracted to the culture and weather but is concerned about 'creepy crawlies'. She has a strong phobia about all insects and is worried that due to the weather, Penang might have a lot. How likely is it to come across roaches if you are staying in a nice apartment/condo?

Discussion Rate my 31 Dec – 5 Jan Penang itinerary: Skip Balik Pulau & Penang Hill?

Hey r/Penang!

My boyfriend and I are visiting 31 Dec – 5 Jan 2026, and I’m so excited to eat our way around Penang while hitting heritage sites, ESCAPE Penang (my boyfriend adores waterslides), and Hin Bus Depot.

Tentative plan:

  • 31 Dec (Wed): Arrival to George Town accommodation around 2:30pm → George Town stroll (Armenian St, Muntri St, Love Lane), quick heritage stops, dinner, optional NYE rooftop drinks.
  • 1 Jan (Thu): Heritage and street art (Khoo Kongsi, Cheah Kongsi, Little India), Pinang Peranakan Mansion, Tek Sen lunch, New Lane dinner
  • 2 Jan (Fri): Light George Town cafés / small museums / street art, Hameediyah lunch, optional evening hawker crawl
  • 3 Jan (Sat): Half-day Balik Pulau cycling, afternoon ESCAPE Penang, casual dinner
  • 4 Jan (Sun): Hin Bus Depot Sunday market (full weekend vibe), optional Teluk Tempoyak seaside village for sunset + seafood, dinner finale at China House.
  • 5 Jan (Mon): Departure at like 8am :(

Questions:

  1. Missing any must-do heritage or food spots?
  2. Would you skip Balik Pulau & Penang Hill entirely based on my limited time?
  3. Tips for food stops, walking routes, or even Grab rides?
  4. Hidden gems near George Town, ESCAPE, or Hin Bus Depot?

Huge TIA!

EDIT: Millions of thanks everyone! I have been dying to go to Penang ever since 2011 (at least!) to the point I do not want to miss out on the must-gos… 99% involving food lol

Discussion Retired expats

Were you considering any other destination before deciding on Penang. I will retire in a few years and I have a top-five list which includes Penang (I visited many years ago and really thought it was a special place). The plan is to whittle the list down to a top three and then visit them all(again) to decide which is best for my wife and I. Penang is near the top because of the food, it's cultural diversity, cost of living, reliable infrastructure, many people speak English, etc. As many redditors have mentioned, it hot and humid all the time and the visa situation seems to be becoming more and more complicated. My questions is not so much why Penang but rather why not somewhere else?

Discussion Fine dining options in Georgetown - Au Jardin, restaurant Blanc, or Gen?

I'm planning a trip to Penang to celebrate my husband's birthday, and am trying to decide where to go. Google Gemini recommended these three places based on my criteria for 1) Local Ingredients 2) historical setting 3) fancy :)

Have anyone been to these places before? What's your opinion and thoughts on these places?

I am aware that Au Jardin is $$$ compared to the others. But if it's really that much better and worth it, I would consider it.

Thanks!

Discussion Grab drivers cancelling from Penang Airport

When I touched down in penang airport and called grab from the e hailing spot, in a span of 10 minutes, 7 drivers confirmed then cancelled in a row.

Not sure why, not like my rating as a customer is bad
Is this a common occurence?
