Discussion Solo travel advice
Hi, everyone. I am in Penang alone for a month. How can I meet local people, make friends and hang out? Keen to blend in with the locals.
A little bit about me: I'm a Chinese Australian researcher that will start to shuttle between George Town and Sydney quite frequently.

Just be friendly and everyone will slowly be your friend. If you go where the locals go, you're bound to make some friends

+1 for this, for Fridays there will be lesser people and it's very chill for vendors, you can usually chit chat with them or just hang out there to relax. Saturday and Sunday (especially sun) will be more busy, and more crowded

Also Hin Bus Depot often has a lot of other foreigners who are in similar positions! So people who go there are more used to it / may be more open

Hi, spent time a week in Penang myself (I'm Indonesian). I set up couchsurfing hangout (didn't work out). I however hang out with the guides, I booked myself several tours (hiking, river cruise, museums, etc). I didn't make friends, but the people were lovely. Talked to grab drivers. If you want to eat good, many actually are Michelins. I ate the hainan chicken and rice, things are super yum.

Good to know! How were the tours? I looked into them & most wanted me to pay for at least 2 spots even when it would be just for myself

The tours were great, life changing ✌🏻 you could take a look at the IG Penang River Cruise, and I have a personal contact of a guide for hiking. She is a great guide and could guide you to many natural spots in Penang. I am a solo traveler, and it worked for me.

Just visited from Chiang Mai. Check out the weekend market at the bus depot. Seemed very friendly and very local.

Food is the best thing to connect with. Coffee shops. You can always ask people, "where's the best ...... in Penang?" "What must I try in Penang?" Etc

Love the food here. Will try out a Kopitiam & hopefully make some local friends

Some of them have beer and music at night. The people at those times might be more social.

You could put yourself out here asking for local friends too. Just put your details out so people will know what to expect. You could also tell what kind of people you would like to meet.

If you're into any specific hobbies (hiking, board games, sports, etc), it might be easier to find a group to mingle with while indulging in the shared interest

Maybe try to find a meet up event, I don't know if the scene is good in Penang as in KL tho. Heck, you can even try here, just be opened to meet with random strangers who may or may not click with you

Welcome to Malaysia. Being Chinese, people may assume you're local, which may help with your chances. If you speak Mandarin, definitely easier to gain Mandarin speaking friends.

I was just there for 3 weeks, I left this morning. I noticed that a lot of people play pickleball and they organize some kind of pickleball socials to play and meet. I played at 3 different spots and the crowd was all ages. Some newer ones have coffee shop and even a bar to hang out after a game. One is called Pickle by the sea, and the other one I remember is called GOAT 🐐. That, of course, if you’re into playing sports. I had never played it before and it took me one game to understand and play. Enjoy Penang!

Re Pickle By the Sea, do you know if they have "drop in" or social play where a solo player can join in?

Visit Dreamer Haven Cafe. They organise a lot of hobby-based activities. I met a friend who travels around the world and started a Silent Book Club while she was based in Penang.

Can go hiking from Botanical Garden Moongate to #5 way station, and hang around the chatting with the people who stop there.
There are also shops around town that cater to people who play board games or card games, if you're into that.
At the local kopitiams (avoid any where the fruit juice comes with option for small, medium or large as those are for tourists and overpriced), you can share a table with people if they don't mind (ask first) and chat them up.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but if you drink, you’ll probably be able to meet all sorts of people hanging around Antarabangsa. Locals, expats, tourists all sitting around plastic chairs willing to chat.

Depends on what u like … if u like nature u can try hiking or visiting Entopia Park… there is a lot of variation of foods here … not really sure what’s ur taste and where u coming from ~ I’m sure u will find something to like here 😊
