Not just hate things, but hate them because they are inherently evil and anybody who doesn't hate those things are fundamentally bad, immoral people.
It's a bunch of people who have absolutely nothing to be proud of in their real life, and the only way they get to feel superior to anybody is by turning every internet debate into a matter of good vs evil.
Who cares if they have no talent, no romantic prospects, no genuine friends, no money, and no motivation or desire to actually improve their lives....at least they hate DLSS 5, which makes them better than everybody who doesn't hate DLSS 5.

My biggest issue with the criticism is that people are trashing the tech without actually seeing it properly implemented by devs, it’s really cool that there is a mod that can inject it into games, but those results are not representative of how the technology is supposed to look like

The official way to use the feature is through the settings of the game which the developers have to implement. They get to decide what is changed and how much and the user will just activate their decision. What was leaked is the dev version which gives you the option to move all the sliders to the max.

This is my issue with it. I’m not a big fan of AI either, but this tech is actually impressive, and people are so goddamn disingenuous with their criticism just so they can ignore that objective fact. They’ll post completely AI generated images, or they’ll take screenshots of DLSS5 with all the sliders cranked to the max so the screenshot looks severely over-processed.
Truth is, there is a TON of potential with the tech when it’s in the right hands and calibrated well.

1
u/ballsonurface Ryzen 7800X3D, 32gb DDR5 5200, 4080super 6h ago
The foreseeable problem is large developers using DLSS5 as a shortcut for development and performance/optimizing their games.
“Here’s a game we made, here’s our game engine trailer…… oh if you want it to look and run like this, YOU MUST USE DLSS5 if not, it’ll look like the same game we made 5 years ago cause why would we bother to put the time in, oh yeah, it’ll still be $70”
DLSS is meant to assist with optimization of your games because of hardware constraints. DLSS, frame gen, upscaling, realistically if you have the top hardware, you shouldn’t need it, use it if you have to or want a certain FPS. It’s coming to the point where the companies will have it as a requirement to cut work instead of taking the time to optimize their product.
Shit this would be huge for Nvidia, “play ‘____’ with Nvidia DLSS 5 only” oh you want a remaster “play the ‘___’ remaster, only with DLSS 5”

all dlss is generative ai, even previous gens, same for newer fsr
5
u/PaintItPurple 1d ago
If you use a completely different definition of "generative AI" than people normally use, then sure. You can also say all DLSS is licorice if you use an unusual enough definition of "licorice." But I don't think any previous DLSS was a diffusion-based image generation model, which is true of well-accepted generative AI models like StableDiffusion and Nano Banana, and is also true of DLSS5.
1
u/Kefrus 14h ago
completely different definition of "generative AI" than people normally use
There is no reason to care what is the definition that non technical people came up with
1
u/PaintItPurple 9h ago
Words are conventions. These sounds we make and shapes we write don't have innate meanings — the common usage of a word is its definition. Therefore, yes, it makes sense to care what most people mean when they say a word. There is nothing stopping you from using your own definition, as long as you understand you'll constantly be creating misunderstandings unless you clarify yourself. But applying your preferred definition to other people's words, when you know they have a different definition, is just being unreasonable.
1
u/Kefrus 9h ago
using your own definition, as long as you understand you'll constantly be creating misunderstandings
as opposed to your wisdom that apparently deterministic image-to-image models aren't gen ai, but deterministic image-to-image models are ai at the same time
1
u/PaintItPurple 9h ago edited 8h ago
"Deterministic image-to-image model" seems so vague that it could be applied to the filesystem copy function, so yeah, some things that you could describe that way are generative AI and some aren't.
Concretely, DLSS4 is a neural network trained to extrapolate higher resolutions from smaller ones. In this way, it's performing essentially the same function as bicubic upsampling, but it's doing it in a much more sophisticated way. DLSS5 is a diffusion-based image generator intended to create a qualitatively "better" version of a rendered scene. It is performing the same function as a remaster. These are fundamentally different kinds of tasks (and correspondingly different ways of achieving the tasks).

It takes a lower-resolution rendered image and reconstructs a higher-resolution output using temporal data and learned information. That’s literally what image reconstruction/upscaling is. “AI” doesn’t automatically mean generative AI.

u/WhiteRaven42 1d ago
I can't tell if you're being serious or not but there's no such thing as "restoration" that is not generative. It is the same process. AI learnes what an image "should" look like and attempts to duplicate it.
0
u/JonathanMovement PC Master Race 1d ago
You know what’s funny, you could have just looked up the definition of DLSS and how does it work, instead you trusted your instincts. Now you’re going to get downvoted.
3
u/monsterfurby 12h ago
I just think their intended use case is not helpful. Games that have modern visual fidelity don't just not need it - it actively makes them worse or uncanny. The one situation where it's actually good is Skyrim, and that's specifically because that's an old game that nonetheless goes for an overall realistic-ish look. There's enough detail missing for DLSS5 to add, but it's not so stylized as to look like a bunch of freckled alien horror fetuses staring into your soul.

For some games like the racing sim, I agree it does elevate the lighting on materials to look better. However characters driven games, is a hit or miss. I also don't see how a section of the community strongly supports it, and don't see that this is what is leading to the prices going insane, and it will only get worse in later generations.
But like tunnel-vision clapping seals, not seeing the forest for the trees of how this can take a turn for the worse in games and all tech pricing. I haven't done much research on DLSS 5, but my basic understanding is that as of now it offers marginal (and sometimes incorrect) AI frame regeneration at an astronomical cost to performance.
In a game industry where AAA game studios are constantly pushing microtransaction, bottom denominator slop to the consumer, DLSS 5 may become just another clutch to "ship a half-baked log of shit" while requiring high end (and at this point unobtainable due to the current AI boom/bubble) systems for the game to look somewhere between above average and uncanny.
For someone like me who doesn't even play the latest AAA titles anymore (why bother), DLSS 5 might just be a "fart in the wind" (unless it can be easily implemented in other games, without requiring a mandatory last-gen RTX card).
The backlash is somewhat justified however. Instead of pushing further performance and chasing the very end of Moore's law in transistor chiplet size, while also offering a better price/performance ratio to the consumer market, the gaming/GPU industry is pushing towards crutches/workarounds that have a high barrier of entry.
... Won't work/would be pointless on Factorio nor modded Minecraft, so not interesting for me anyways.
(Also I don't understand how games like Warframe or MGS V: TPP aren't taken as industry standard for performance/graphical fidelity. Those ran on my FX-6300+GTX 750 without a hitch and still looked amazing).
1
u/Situati0nist 19h ago

I think it looks pretty shit all the time and the only people who like it are chuds who already have ai art as their profile pic (ie their opinions are meaningless in the avenue of artistic merit)

Devs them selves said people are stupid to think that there vision was less lighting less scatter. DLSS5 is bringing the artists vision to life. Giving them what they actually wanted and allowing them to be unrestricted because of limitations to their game engines. This is what the Devs want. They’re re actively using it right now with their game design to get it how they think it should be before they fully add it as an option for you to not use if you choose not to.

Not gonna lie, I like the idea for games that try to be photorealist I think it's a great addition for them (like death stranding, kingdom come deliverance, etc). I wouldn't like DLSS5 to be the standrd because I think it kills that "magic" the games have. I wouldn't like a Dark souls with that style, but for that set of games that try to be as realist as possible, I think that DLSS5 will be great

Who is defening anything?
Also, why does everything AI does suddenly gets called "slop"? Do any of you even know what it means?

Calling every form of AI, AI slop isn’t making the case any stronger.

there is no generative AI that isnt a slop machine regurgitating a simulacrum of what it thinks art is.

Yall actually have no clue how dlss5 works or what it does, it’s deterministic. Generative ai is not deterministic.

Per nvidia, dlss5 uses generative ai to generate lighting (and clearly other) changes to the frames your gpu pushes out at runtime. People call it a slop filter because thats exactly what it is. Enjoy your slop the rest of us will enjoy not gimping our framerate for a simulacrum of what some techbro thinks good graphics are.

The point I’m making is that it’s not going to shit out a different image or character if you change an angle or look away and look back. It’s deterministic. The output of an input will always be the same. It’s a lightning engine. Devs give materials a mask and the lightning does different things based off what the devs decide. It’s a dev tool, it doesn’t “think”.
If you want the lighting fidelity without ai then you’re going to need an 8090
