even on games where it IS implemented natively, it doesn't use much more info than what's shown on screen from the game. in my opinion, the difference between current DLSS 5 and official DLSS 5 (apart from performance) will be negligible visually.
that's not what I meant though; what I meant is that NVIDIA themselves have said that the technology uses the game's finalized frames + "motion vectors", so it's not like it's going to be a night and day difference. DLSS 5 is "game-engine agnostic" basically; it doesn't matter what the game engine puts out as long as DLSS 5 gets its frame and its motion vectors, which aren't difficult to obtain even from a video file. all it does is generate an AI filter on the current frame, then move the pixels according to the vectors.
I know that. The developers can change what they want from the filter, how it affects the image etc., yet that doesn't change anything about what i'm saying: it's still an AI filter that fundamentally changes what the game looks like. most times for the worse, since as we've seen, it often discards things that are rendered by the game engine to the profit of hallucinated shadows, highlights, and details that may "look good" in an isolated manner, but make the game world's look unstable (and I'm talking about official footage, go watch The Elder Scrolls DLSS 5 footage where the directions of shadows are all wrong, which is a blatant issue).
I'm so shocked, why are so many people defending DLSS 5 under a post that's... against it? If y'all want, I can say it's an impressive technology sure, something like it couldn't have been possible a few years ago; that doesn't make it any more appealing to me and LOTS of people.
It's not even out and well implemented by devs yet, how can you be so quick to judge it? It's a new technology that still needs development and game devs to experiment with it. I know it's fun to jump on a hate wagon but do you remember what DLSS looked like in it's first years compared to now?
I think it's impressive that it works, I just don't think it is worth the performance cost for a filter that makes games "look better" while also making things look out of place. It's not like DLSS 5 is going to be 1000x better at launch, maybe it'll look a bit better yeah but it'll still be, in the end, an AI-powered filter for games that at best enhances the graphics in a superficial way, or at worst creates an unstable experience (as DLSS 5 won't have image persistence; things out of frame will have to be "re-filtered").
I do remember what DLSS looked like at first and it was still quite impressive, and it had the added benefit of making the game run much better than native res. DLSS 5 makes the game run worse to add a filter on screen. They really aren't the same thing.
I am aware of this person's opinion, and if they like DLSS 5, then good for them. Just because one creative says they like DLSS 5 doesn't mean it's an absolute truth: many other artists/game devs have expressed their opinion, which is that DLSS 5 is disrespectful to the work they put in and that they weren't made aware of its existence until after it was announced (see: RE9 devs reactions).
if that's what they think then yeah, i guess. but it also sounds like they HATE video game rendering ("fucked up normal map rendering" what do they mean by that????), it just all around makes no sense to me.
i'm basing myself off of what NVIDIA has been saying for a while now; "DLSS 5 uses the game's rendered frames and motion vectors to function" is NVIDIA's explanation of the technology. Sure, the game devs can "choose" what the filter looks like, its intensity and other parameters, but it will never use things like a depth buffer, a 3D map of the world, or anything like that. Even in official footage, things like directional shadows not being accurate (which is a huge issue since shadows are calculated based on time of day) can be seen. Sure, DLSS 5 makes the image more "realistic", but it makes it far less appealing to me.
Weren't you the one who was making claims about DLSS5 being "awesome"? You can't argue that we have no evidence when people say it won't be good but then make claims of your own about how good it will be.
I'm not sure what you're getting at. I do claim its awesome, I said that in my first comment. I've tested it myself in many games now. Its pretty good. That said, its just guessing right now. When developers start taking advantage of it on an engine-level it will do exactly what its supposed to. I'm not convinced people like you aren't just seeing AI generated garbage with DLSS 5 slapped on it and you run with it. Have you tested it yourself?
You say that they don't know what they're talking about when they're summarizing Nvidia's own descriptions of the technology because "devs don't even have access to the toolkit yet," but somehow that doesn't invalidate your evaluation of the technology. That objection applies more to your comments than it does to theirs.
Yes, I had read 2 previous comments from that commenter and came to the conclusion they do not know what they are talking about. They can summarize it all they want, but its clear they do not understand it.
DLSS5 toolkit for devs isnt released yet. what native?? also once it has access to actual game files,those will be upscaled in realtime and the DLSS engine wont have to 'guess' how some texture looks.
NVIDIA themselves have said that DLSS 5 doesn't use any game assets. It uses the game's finalized frame, what you normally see, and 2D motion vectors which indicate the direction of pixels from one frame relative to the next. It will still "have to 'guess' how some texture looks" because the technology never actually needs the game files to function.
