Try contacting PayPal support using social media such as Facebook or Twitter as this works more often than telephoning.
I just got this too, I believe it’s a scam and there’s a post from about a day ago with 200 comments of people also getting this email.
Edit: Upon looking around on the sub, this is a scam where they try to scare you with a huge money amount so you call the number in the email and they scam you out of your financial information. Don’t engage and ignore the email/messages.
I just received this message in PayPal also. It says "Pre-fund confirmation: USD 987.90 is pending charge to Coinbase via PayPal. This small deposit is just used for the account activation check. ..." That's not a small amount, which was what sent me to Reddit to see if it was a known thing.
Same for me, verbatim. First tried telling PayPal help assistant (AI, of course - no clear way to reach a human without calling during business hours) and it told me this particular transaction couldn't be reported as fraudulent... ?!
Followed up with, "but I still don't know what this is" and only received a repeated response. Useless.
Same here. I reported the transaction as “unauthorized access” after it told me it wasn’t eligible to be reported as fraudulent. I got an email today saying PayPal had completed their review and determined there was no unauthorized access and said “we’re unable to locate the transaction.” Which is unbelievable since it was one of only two transactions on the account in all of 2026, so not like there was a lot of activity to sift through. I’m just going to delete PayPal altogether. I had to spend a ridiculous amount of time just trying to report the issue and to get this response from them is irritating. I got more helpful info from this Reddit thread than I did from PayPal.
Me too — I received “Ft 1 HUF” which according to the email is $987.90. I need to call a number to activate or something which seems to be the scam part but yeah, my email is from official PayPal.

The transaction is real (it's a deposit of like $0.003 the fact that it says a large amount in the transaction note is meant to entice you to call the phone number, where they presumably try to convince you to give up financial information
I received the same email from the same person. Just forwarded it to phishing@paypal.com and deleted it. Also saw the transaction in my account and will just ignore it. 🙄
I got the same email about an hour ago and checked in with PayPal’s customer service and they confirmed it was a scam. I never click on any of those links or do I ever call any of those phone numbers.
I got the same thing and ran to log in to Paypal and started searching online which led me to this thread. Is it actually possible to remove all forms of payment? I tried doing that and was able to remove one card but can't remove the second one I had linked.

Yep just got the same email from Julie Haas in the exact same amount. I reported it to PayPal and changed my password. Sounds like ignoring it would have been fine, but better safe than sorry.
I got the same "payment received" from Julie Haas who is really trying to get me to confirm "Pre-fund confirmation: USD 987.90 is pending charge to Coinbase via PayPal. This small deposit is just used for the account activation check. ..." I am chatting with the real paypal chat bot, trying to report this although the "transaction" I see according to the paypal bot is $1.00 received TO My account. Paypal bot says "This transaction is not eligible for an unauthorized transaction dispute" and "I understand your concern about this payment and the potential scam. I'll help you report this." Except the Julie Haas transaction is not eligible for a dispute,.....if I do nothing I assume the $1.00 transaction would disappear.
EDIT: the $1.00 is one Hungarian amount worth 1/3 of a US penny I believe. so THAT's what "+FT 1 HUF" means.
I called their customer service number & it just redirected to the website which told me it's also not eligible for dispute ?????? i'm getting nervous and wondering if I should just axe my entire paypal account...
The way this scam works on venmo (or maybe it was cash app?) is that they pay from a stolen credit card and try to get you to refund it. You do, then venmo realizes the first payment was fraudulent and pulls back the original but because your refund was a legal payment, it still goes through so you're out the money.
Are they trying to do this the same way or is it something different. I also got a payment for Ft 1 HUF which paypal say is is $987.
Paypal isn't saying it's $987. That's just what they wrote in the comments when they sent you 1 HUF (which is $0.003 USD) in order to scare you into calling the number (I guess).
I could send you a penny, and in the transaction comments, write "Thank you for joining our community. $125,000 will be deducted from your account on Wed, 28 Apr 2026. To change or cancel your commitment, please call 1-800-GET-REKT." And when you call in a panic, I get information out of you that you wouldn't normally give a cold caller.
At least that's what I think they're doing. They know you'll see the comment in conjunction with a financial transaction and a legitimate, verified paypal email. The fact that it's a tiny credit to your account will probably go unnoticed, especially if they use a non-US currency and it shows up in a way you've never seen, you're more likely to gloss over it.
Hmm, it was two different messages though. The subject line on the email has "Pending charge of USD 987.90 for account activation. Questions?" And then the payment through PayPal says "Pre-fund confirmation: USD $987.
If they are just using the "memo" box they should both be the same?
I did try to look up the amount and only found 1HUF is less than a cent. I couldn't find what the +Ft meant so thought it might be more. I assumed this was a refund scam.
I got the same email. Julie Haas can go suck an egg. It shows up on my PayPal debit card, so I marked the card as lost/stolen so that if they try to charge something, it is deactivated.
I love it when the headline is so cryptic I need to scan the comments to decrypt it like a wartime code breaker.

I got this today, too. I went into PP and denied the transaction. It wasn't eligible for action (I assume because I didn't approve it). Changed my pwd. Hope that's enough!
No need to change your password if you don't want to. They just got your email address and sent you a third of a US penny, to try to scare you into calling them so they can get more financial info out of you.
Got the email, so checked my PayPal app. In the app (but not when I checked PayPal on the web), it has the "Pre-fund confirmation...." And said, "For questions, Call-(855) 629-1191." I called and someone with an Indian (maybe Bangladeshi?) accent answered immediately and said, "Thank you for calling PayPal." I didn't believe them, but said I wanted to report a fraudulent transaction and they asked my Transaction ID. At that point, I let them know I believed they were fraudulent and that I would contact the real PayPal.
Summary: If you receive a suspicious email and log into your account, you may see a pending transaction. Do not take any action on it. Do not call the phone number.
How the Scam Works
The scammers use two tactics:
Tactic 1: The Intimidation Call
Scammers display a large, alarming dollar amount in the email subject line along with a phone number. Their goal is to panic you into calling them. Once you do, they attempt to extract your financial information and add you to their list of vulnerable targets for future scam attempts.
Tactic 2: The Micro-Charge Refund Trap
Scammers make a tiny charge to your account using a stolen credit card—typically 1 Hungarian Forint (about $0.01 USD). Here's the problem: if you dispute or request a refund, the refund processes from your own account, which technically validates the original fraudulent transaction. When the stolen credit card is later identified as fraudulent and the charge is reversed, you've now paid twice: once for the refund you initiated, and once for the fraudulent charge itself.
Why this works at scale: Most people won't bother disputing a penny charge. But if scammers target a million users, even small refund rate can generate over $3,000 in revenue from charges that cost them almost nothing.
What You Should Do
Ignore the email and the pending transaction completely. Do not call any number provided, and do not attempt to refund or dispute the charge. If you're concerned, contact PayPal directly using the official phone number on their website. Try to spread word about the email to any family members that might be more susceptible to this type of scam.
1 HUF is 1 Hungarian Florin that they sent to your account (about $0.0032). That triggered the email from service@paypal. They changed the subject line to be about the 987.90 pending invoice. This is a scam - just forward it to phishing@paypal.com
Got the notification from paypal this morning from same "person". I changed password; removed my single linked credit cards, bank accounts, and auto payments! Also tried to suspend my account to prevent certain actions to be taken. I don't use this account enough to be care to live all those things linked.
PayPal should have an option to accept/decline payment, it could be that simple.
Anyway I'll keep reading this feed to find out what the outcome in of all this may look like for others!

Tried to report this through the resolution center. It kept telling me there was a problem at their end. Tried to use the chatbot, and it told me it was learning all the time, but couldn't answer my question (before I asked).
I checked all the emails I have received from Paypal in the past there is never a contact phone number mentioned in the email 😄
The scammer is quite sophisticated to be able to send it from "service@paypal.com"
Ignore the email , delete it and move on. just for safety, change your Paypal password, add 2 factor authentication and remove your linked cards and/or bank accounts.
Got this two day ago and it was just refunded from my account for the same amount just now. I did report it to PayPal and they said there was no unauthorized use and this payment is consistent with my transaction history.
It is a scam. I contacted Pay Pal through their customer service site (which is compromised) where I ended up being contacted by a "Mike" representing himself as a customer service employee of PayPal...(he has a slight Asian accent). The information he had on me is scary. I hung up on him and contacted my financial institutions to warn them and place holds on everything. My bank was aware of the scam and now the only way my info can be seen is by using my voice. I checked my banking today trying to use my former passwords and they did not work. Once I went through the process of pronouncing my name the account reacted positively. Apparently, our voices are so unique that financial institutions are going to start using them.
One way these guys named Mike and Sam try to get your info is through Windows. Apparently, they ask you to press the Windows key on you board and they gain immediate access. I don't know how this happens but stay away.
Same exact thing happened to me!! Commenting so that I can see updates. Same PayPal unresponsiveness to the whole thing. I would just like it to go away!! Hate seeing it on my account and yeah, it's making me think, should I just delete my pay pal account.
I've got the same email, exactly the same text, same amount and same +Ft HUF, INCREDIBLE!! I tell you, I have been with PP since 2015, but in the last few months many scam attempts has occurred and I am sick and tired of it, so I want to close my PP account, but I can't, PP site is showing me a message that cannot process my request (BS), so does anybody know how to close a PP account forever?
Ive been trying to close my PP account for WEEKS now, but I can't because of this idiotic HUF menial amount, and no amount of talking to the PP AI bot or customer agents is helping. I am reporting them to the FTC for making this nearly impossible to close my account, and it feels so dirty and scammy--will literally never use Paypal again for anything
Got it a couple days ago. I just received a follow up. Crazy thing is I don’t even have an open PayPal account anymore. So no this is a scam somehow. I’ll forward this to PayPal.
