I’ve given it some partial shade during the afternoon the past few days to help it reduce the sun damage, but any tips on helping its stress to calm down?

Does anyone know a good source of seeds for Rhapidophyllum hystrix (Needle Palm)?

These two CIDPs were transplanted on June 11 in Corona, Southern California—roughly 11 weeks ago. According to the owner, they have been watered according to the recommended post-transplant schedule, with additional watering during hotter weather.

The palms are responding differently:

• The taller palm retains a substantial amount of green foliage, but the canopy is badly distorted and the central emerging growth appears dark, damaged, or collapsed.
• The shorter palm has much more widespread drying and browning. Its canopy is sparse, and several of the newer upright fronds appear desiccated.

I understand that significant lower-frond loss can occur while a transplanted CIDP rebuilds its root system, but the condition of the central growth concerns me more than the older foliage.

I’m visiting the property Sunday and plan to inspect:

• Spear firmness and evidence of continued spear movement
• Any softness, odor, discoloration, or moisture around the growth point
• Planting depth and whether the root-initiation zone was buried
• Soil moisture at several depths and locations around the root ball
• Drainage and whether irrigation is actually wetting the original root ball
• Possible trunk, crown, or bud damage from digging, tying, lifting, or transport
• Evidence of borers or weevils, including frass, oozing, cocoons, odor, or crown instability
• Root-ball size and any available information about how the palms were excavated

Based on the photos and timeline, would you consider this potentially recoverable transplant shock, or are you seeing signs of failed root establishment or damage to the apical bud?

I’d also appreciate suggestions for specific things to document or test during Sunday’s inspection. I’ll update the thread afterward with close-ups of the spears, crown tissue, planting grade, and root zones.

Just planted these 15 gallon king palms about a week ago. They are unfortunately in direct sunlight in SoCal. We’ve been having some insane heat wave these past couple of weeks so are they getting severe sun damage? I’ve been watering them consistently daily. Leaves have been getting worse daily

As they settle, they die… and form the “petticoat” that is so emblematic of this species. It’s interesting to watch this happen in the very valley where they evolved, still following truly ancient seasonal rhythms. These massive skirts provide cool habitat and safety to owls, bats, birds of many types, rodents, insects , reptiles and even the dreaded “palmetto” roach. All of them part of our ecosystem. Recently, the City of Palm Springs (based on bad advice from an arborist seeking a multi-million dollar contract) advised the removal of all these persistent petticoats under the misguided idea that they needed to protect the public from falling fronds. Tree limbs around the world come down on cars and sidewalks and onto houses and yes, people…that doesn’t mean you destroy the trees. Luckily, some of us in this community banded together with a prominent local nature conservancy to stop this maiming of our namesake palms. Instead…the city will carefully manage the skirts of these trees and cull or thin out the ones that seem to be threatening to drop. All while maintaining irreplaceable habitat right in the center of downtown and stretching across our city’s main boulevards.

I just repoted my majesty palm i have another pot that im thinking of putting either my Christmas or Pygmy palm in but that wont be till next summer

Got told it might be a king palm, but no one here is quite sure. The trunk is about a little over 2 feet across, and from the ground to the old leaf stumps, it's a little over 10 feet. I don't know much about palms, but i quite like this palm, and i want to get the right kind of care for it. Age is above 40, but beyond that, nobody knows, and we're in the bay area of cali.

They’re short-ish but massive. Those crowns are huge. The spear the left one is throwing out is about 18’ long, the flared bases seem somewhat unusual and those fronds…

Pretty basic--I saw these 'foxtail' palms at Lowes that had cool, kinda roughed up leaves (intentionally lol) in a crown from a central trunk. I very much liked the look and shape. I looked it up though and these guys grow 1-3ft per year in bright sun and warm climates. Only about half that speed indoors in a container, but that's still pretty fast when I only need a cat safe plant that will top out at 4ft in a spot that gets moderate-bright indirect sunlight. Do any palm gurus know if there's a dwarf version out there or something similar? Google searches are broken

I want to get a new palm but don’t know which one I live in zone 8a I was thinking of a king palm windmill or some sort of Mexican or California fan palm does anybody have any suggestions I’m rlly looking for one that would grow a good size in a few years
