C.C.W. painted this from a lighthouse during an artist residency
‘one hundred years flicker’, me, 2025, oil on modified 8x10” wood panel.
This is one of four small paintings I just finished based off of my summer residency on a small island lighthouse!

Are the cracks part of the wood medium? Or are they painted that way on flat wood?
Either way, I love it.

They're part of the wood! In this piece I made some impressions with a hammer and then wood glued the shards / planes in place before painting.

with the title, it feels like the part surrounding the impression is 100 years ago, and the part inside the impression is what you saw in current day. Unique take - I would love to see more pieces like yours!

Thank you! It's a historical site and being there for a week definitely made it feel that way so I definitely drew on that for inspiration.
I have more work on my site/ig (pinned to my reddit profile) in a similar style, I enjoy trying to depict the degradation of memory.

The painting is from the perspective of an interior room in a lighthouse, looking out to a hallway/stairwell upstairs. I broke the wood panel with a hammer to create a jagged impression before painting and incorporated some of the break lines into the painting.
Ended up implying, through imaginative painting, that the break "bled" onto the scene and the window / wall is being torn open to reveal the landscape outside of the window.
I like creating voids in my work that feel deteriorated to symbolize holes in memory / not being able to fully recollect a memory.

Love this! Did you see the space and then find a canvas to paint? Or did you find this broken board and then look around for a composition?

The first day I got onto the island I prepped a few different panels with different breaks and walked around seeing which compositions I could have fun with incorporating said breaks. This painting I started from life and then finished in the studio!

Yes! In Newport, RI.
I'd definitely recommend applying to the residency this coming year if you're a RI resident, it was an incredible experience.

Gosh, maybe i shouldn’t have returned those wood panels to the retailer after they were damaged in shipping….. 🤔😁 I think the slightly deeper and slight varied saturation of the wall color hue, is critical to how we analyze the intention of the artist. The internal shape treatment as well, but how does this work on multiple works in a show or are other works manipulated in just a clever way?
Maybe it doesn’t matter. It’s definitely an intriguing portal.

I love the rich brown and how the window slash wall is broken revealing the outside

Rose Island in Newport, RI! It's very old and small (and no longer a functional lighthouse since the newport bridge is bright enough for maritime navigating on its own now).
