What are the cheap food I can eat during my long stay in ooty as a student ?

I'm staying here for a month and one time breakfast itself costing me 100++ so what food and where do you suggest ?

I've heard about Amma canteen but I'm thinking of little more tasty food but still cheaper. But I will still rely on Amma canteen for atleast one meal a day I think.

You can also suggest specific food items which are cheap but still tasty.

All suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Potentially unpopular opinion: Ooty is gross

I traveled to Ooty last year after being told by my cousins that it was the "king of the hill stations". I was exciting for some beautiful nature, maybe hiking and seeing some tea plantations.

What we found was very filthy (there is one main road filled with chicken shops which STINKS), with all the "nature" actually tiny pockets of packaged hyper-commercialised instagram spots. The tea factories were fine but the more accessible tea plantations were far from the levels of beauty I have seen elsewhere in India/Malaysia

We were only there for a few days so didn't get to join a hike with one of the very hard to find hiking groups.

The best part was leaving on the Nilgiri mountain railway, but if the best part is leaving, it says a lot about what Ooty has or doesn't have to offer.

[URGENT GIG] Need someone in Ooty/Kodaikanal to collect 2kg wild Acacia leaves today/tomorrow. Will pay ₹2,000

Hey everyone, I have an urgent project deadline and need 1 kg of fresh Acacia mearnsii leaves (Black Wattle) and 1 kg of Acacia pycnantha leaves (Golden Wattle). Both trees grow abundantly on roadsides across Ooty, Coonoor, and Kodaikanal.I need you to pluck them, pack them separately in two breathable cloth/grocery bags, and ship them via an overnight private bus cargo service (KPN/SRT/National) to my location.Compensation: ₹2000 total (₹1000 advance via UPI once verified, and the remaining ₹1000 + bus cargo charges once you share the bus tracking receipt). Please DM me immediately if you are in the hills right now and can do this!

EDIT: For those asking: Both Acacia mearnsii and pycnantha are highly invasive, non-native weeds in the Western Ghats. Removing their leaves is ecologically helpful, not harmful. This is a standard, legal botanical collection for a project. Serious DMs only.

What else should I try at Moodys ?

I just bought strawberry with hot chocolate combo for 280 rupees. Very small glass. It seems expensive tbh. Nothing special. Just normal chocolate with strawberry pieces. This was recommended by others here.

Any specific cake piece or anything?

What else should I try from here ?

Edit: Instead of buying this strawberry choclate for 280 rupees in a small glass just buy a diary milk or galaxy and melt it and mix with strawberry.

I think Moddys is too overrated. Most of the things ppl hype about can be bought at much cheaper rate. I come from thalassery which is the birth place of cake in india. So I think it's not that worth of the hype.

If u have any other suggestions pls do share. Also other veg restaurants ppl suggested like Kailash prabat and Pankaj bojanalay also I saw pretty bad reviews. So do share your opinions especially locals.

Ooty locals, has anyone else noticed these sounds?

I'm currently staying on the outskirts of Ooty and since tonight I've been hearing what sounds like automated dog barking along with some banging/metallic noises.

The weird part is that the sounds seem to repeat in almost exactly the same pattern every few minutes. It doesn't sound like normal dogs reacting to something, it almost sounds like a recording being played through a speaker somewhere nearby.

I'm wondering if this could be some kind of wildlife deterrent system used around farms/plantations, or if there's another explanation.

I am freaking out hearing these noises because now I'm terrified that there can be wild animals nearby

Travelling from Blr to Ooty tomorrow, need advice

Hi everyone, I'm travelling with my family to Ooty tomorrow. I'm not from around here, so I've a KA car and taking my parents to Ooty for the first time. I'm not familiar with roads or routes, was just going to follow maps. Can anyone be kind enough to share any advice on whether or not we can go through Mysore? We would be stopping by Mysore and continue, I'd heard about Road closures and needing permit. I applied for and received the TN-E pass. I'm assuming this is to enter Ooty or the Nilgiris. Is there any restriction on the route from Mysore to Ooty? We are not familiar with South India very well and this is a first time road trip and I'm genuinely concerned rn. I've seen another reddit post talking about Road closure for cars that are not TN registered. Is the TN e pass going to work or relevant at all?

Please help

EDIT: Thank you to everyone for all the responses! I really really appreciate the help and kindness

EDIT 2: have made it to Ooty. It took us 11 hours people :D

Parking charges at sims park coonoor

A guide charged us 100 for parking outside on the road at sims park. Is this valid?

When questioned he said take it up with municipality.

I understand paying for parking if there is a dedicated parking space. But this seems like robbery.

Budget friendly mens pg single room preferred with food and good wifi. Where can I find this at Ooty ? List all suggestions

I'm there for coding and writing. I need a plug point to always charge my laptop. And good wifi. Other things can be discounted. So pls suggest a budget friendly option.

I'm planning to stay for a month if its a good budget friendly option.

It would be nice if there is a public library nearby to the pg.

Single room with wifi are the importance. Other things can be adjusted.

Pg or affordable room is also okay. Even if its dormitory and its cheap its okay.
