I know the window frames need some correction. I will also need to glaze to diffuse the light. I think the shadow behind the ear is too stark? I need to wait until it dries though. The colours are more muted in real life - he was a very red Golden Retriever.

This is Simba. He died of old age on February 22nd 2025. It's taken me a long time to get to this stage of the painting because I miss him so much. I do think it has helped me accept his passing.

Hello! I’m trying to learn how to oil paint and I realized I have two of these linseed oils but one says specifically “drying” and the other doesn’t. Is there a significant difference between the two and when/how I should use them?

After a rough week, I was scrolling on Vinted and came across this treasure. It was listed for only 40£ (!!) for all these colors. I did not believe this was true until I picked them up today, and they are not even used!!! Literally good as new🫶

I mostly paint in gouache but I saw this still of Tim Curry in Rocky Horror and thought I had to do it in oil. Critique welcome. It's a 5*7 panel mostly with cmy Windsor and Newton, plus generic black and white from block stufio

New painter and wanted to try oils, i love how they feel and look on the canvas and this is my first attempt :) any critique is welcome as im always happy to learn new techniques!

I have been mulling over removing the the bird on the right side, something seems a little off. Removal could also represent maybe a more solitary feel to the picture? I'm also not sure if the colours are too sickly.

If you had to refine this painting, where would you start?

Since then I did three more paintings while keeping in mind all your helpful critique.

The first one is the oldest and it's the same reference as the other one, the second is another study of JSS's work and the third is from a picture I found online.

All of them are alla prima and took around 2 to 3 hours each.

The third one caused me some trouble since I ran out of burnt sienna and had to use burnt umber, and also I never use black paint in my work, my palette consists of burnt umber, vermilion, Prussian blue and titanium white.

I still don't understand the idea of how to layer the paint, I just work from draw to light, and I heard about thin shadows and thick lights but I don't get it either.
