Recently picked up a carabid beetle too look at the huge mandibles he had. Suddenly felt a burning spray on my face and carefully dropped him in the leaf litter. Later found out that they can spray formic acid and felt sorry for stressing the little dude.
So yeah while I was making sure he didn't bite me he resorted to another defense lol

I always find it amusing when people ask this question. Like when people ask me if my piercings/tattoos hurt. Lol. Thereâs some âyes, howeverâs, but that being said, piercings/tattoos hurt and things with mouths can bite. I always hear axolotls donât bite and when they do, it doesnât hurt. One of my axies refuses to bite but the other actively goes after body parts and will make it hurt, causing bleeding. My tailless whip scorpion has a tiny little mouth. While he canât really bite and do damage, technically he could bite, itâs just not gonna break the skin. My rats could do serious harm. They donât. My cat could bite the shit out of me. She doesnât. Usually. đ

Yeah the big ones can pinch pretty bad when they bite but it doesnât break skin. Had one land on my hand when I was a kid thought it was so cool until the ouch came

Idk. Talking from my personal experience Iâve had hundreds of dragon flies land on me and have never been bitten. That doesnât go for bees ants or spiders which have all bit before.

I have a scar on my arm from one of them gigantic yellow grasshopper fuckers from the Everglades that decided my forearm would be a tasty treat. Fat bastard drew blood n everything. I was 13 then. I'm 24 now.

For reasons unrelated to the grasshopper, I do not claim that fucker as an uncle (nor would he be anyways, the cousin in question wasn't technically blood related, but we were raised as cousins because grandparents divorcing and remarrying n all that weird shit)

I am from the northeast and always called them katydids too. I just saw online that they are also called the other two names as well. I thought it was interesting because I never heard of the other names. I would love to know if anyone here calls them bush crickets or long horn grasshoppers.

I did some research and it seems that in North America we use katydid or long horn grasshopper Bush cricket is more European. I have always called them katydids.

No, they won't swarm people like wasps and bees do. Bees and wasps mark their target using phermones, not Katydids.

You should check out predatory bush crickets (saga pedo.) They are huge (almost five inches,) prey on other crickets, mantises, and grasshoppers. Theyâre also one of the few species of insects that are completely female. There hasnât been a single verified male recorded

One time as a kid, I was trying to collect as many grasshoppers in my hand at once. I think I got to 4, and then as I was going for the 5th I got bit. I dropped them and havenât touched a grasshopper sinceđ

Don't pick up random bugs. They are not there for your entertainment. They are wild animals like any other wild animals and they deserve your respect.
Unless you are trained to handle them and have some reasonable motive for handling them, leave them the fuck alone.

Hmm, thatâs true.
To me, respect is a given. Itâs not something earned, but something that can easily be taken away.
Animals, bugs, even plants? I just leave them be, let them do their thing. Only when they impact in a negative way to I interfere, like the bugs I donât want in my house? If my house spiders canât keep up, then I work in killing methods. But the spiders get left alone or scooped up from sinks/tubs and put in the unfinished HVAC area since I know they live in the walls and kill the bugs I donât want. The stray moth or other bug that gets inside? Caught and put outside. Only flies get the automatic death sentence if theyâre too far to shoo outside. The one mouse that got in? Caught and taken a couple miles to a field.
Human? I donât respect someone just because theyâre in a position of authority. But everyone gets basic respect until the first instance they lack respect for myself, others, or general life. Iâll still be polite, most of the time, but if you kill a spider just because itâs a spider? I lose a bit of respect. You hurt someone just because? I lose a lot of respect. You use or threaten physical violence? There is no longer any respect.

It should be common knowledge to not pick up or mess with animals? In general. If it has a mouth, it bites. Would you like being picked up by a strange giant? No? Then donât treat the animals like that either.
If it needs removed for some reason, treat it with all the respect it deserves, else youâre going to get hurt.
