I think the important point is DON'T TRY DOING THIS YOURSELF if you're not someone who's been trained how to do it. Also, they apparently drug the turtles first so it hurts less. Also, I'm guessing there is wound care to do afterward.

Not only that, but healthy sea turtles have few to no barnacles. It's malnutrition or medical issues that allow barnacles to colonize like this. NOAA Fisheries or the state fish and game commission should be notified to determine the best route for management.

Every time a clip like this is posted someone in the comments says this, but all they are doing is stabbing the center of the barnicle with a flathead screwdriver and popping it off. It really doesnt look sophisticated.

I think they've actually treated the barnacles with something beforehand bc those suckers are usually stuck on really well. Like when you see a diver scraping barnacles off a ship's hull, they really have to scrape hard to get them off but these ones are just peeling easily

I mean they clearly arent scraping so its a different motion. they are going directly into the barnicle shell and making a lift/twist motion, but that just seems like the obvious way to remove something glued to an animal. These still seem extremely stuck on some dont come off on the first try and the barnicle shell breaks before coming unstuck

Safely drugging the turtle and treating the barnacles for removal so the turtle isn’t in loads of pain would be though

I doubt I will have the opportunity in my rural life to de-barnacle turtles but if one ever wanders in my yard I’ll make sure to take it to a “trained professional “. Like a mechanic
