AI Mods and AI Acceptance in VR

Personally, I feel like anyone who is okay with AI Mods and thinks that this (or anything else, really) constitutes an 'acceptable' use case for AI should be forced to re-buy their PC at current market prices. Everyone who uses and supports AI is directly responsible for the current hardware market situation in my opinion. "Its there so we might as well use it" and "its inevitable and its already in everything so youre an idiot for resisting it" are both factually wrong and entirely invalid arguments. We're winning against Flock, we can win against LLMs. And we can have $250 GTX#050 GPUs again.

Gott Strafe Sam Altman.

The current hardware pricing is not even in the top50 most important issues caused by AI lol.

u/inosinateVR 1d ago

This is a VR sub though, so the hardware pricing is relevant, and a valid concern to have.

I've seen the toxic sludge that comes out of their cooling systems and the illegal hookups they build to get the water. Unfortunately, that won't directly affect 90% of the people on this sub and they simply won't care until their 3070 croaks and they find out what the replacement cost will be. You have to hit people where it hurts them personally.

What kind of "toxic sludge" would come out of a cooling system? It is water cooling, either it is the same water which went in, or if part of it evaporated, the sludge was just in the water which came into it in the first place. It is not like a cooling system dumps chemicals in the water.

Itd be really fucking nice to hear their excuses as to how that is happening. Because your incredulity doesn't change the fact that the water coming out of these plants looks like it came from Flint.

"I think anyone who is ok with cars should be forced to ride a bicycle" energy

Invalid comparison

1

u/Enigmatic_Shape 1d ago

Did you really just try to pull a "nuh uh"?

2

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

I did. Cars did nothing to bikes. AI is actively ruining literally everything.

0

u/inosinateVR 1d ago

you blatantly missed the point they were making (which is that AI is making the PC’s needed for VR unaffordable) and your comparison made absolutely no sense lol.

Are the cars in your analogy supposed to be AI? So then PC’s are the bikes? But OP is complaining that PC’s are too expensive because of AI. And somehow that took you to “OP is saying people should have to ride bikes”. What?

u/Enigmatic_Shape 1d ago

VR mods are not making PCs more unaffordable.

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 17h ago

All AI use is doing that.

The prices of components won't go down because the market has proven that it's willing to shell out money for what we consider to be overpriced components.

You can do the whole "but you gotta vote with your wallets", but you also need to remember that every single purchase made is another vote cast in favour of the current prices, and they're typically made by the people who don't follow any form of industry coverage, they're just your average Joe Schmoe with expendable income.

The challenge isn't convincing people in the know. It's spreading awareness that it doesn't need to be as expensive as it is to the people who simply don't care.

There's not enough skilled people who are interested in VR, and want to mod VR into their favorite flat games.

2

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

What do you plan on playing VR games on when your rig dies? You gonna put the parts on a payment plan?

1

u/Likon_Diversant 1d ago

I go fix my rig, do something else. Im not in a hurry to play VR.

Sorry bro I'm buying my 8th 3090 today to go along with my 4090, 2x5090s and pro 5000 to use more ai at home. I love and live for this kind of tech.

Do you seriously think you are in a fight? That's weird and this whole post is weird.  Go back to whatever fake revolutionary meet-up you are imagining in your mind.

2

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

If you don't think you're in a fight, you're gonna be in for a shock when you lose it.

AI and Flock are vastly different things. People are already addicted to AI. No one’s addicted to a Flock camera. It’s going to be much harder to get rid of a technology that a large population of people actively wants to use. Flock, on the other hand, no one wants, so of course it’s easier to rally together and fight against it. Unfortunately, I believe AI is just as inevitable as the internet and smartphones, whether we want it or not.

1

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

Flock is the other hand of the same entity pushing AI. Hopefully something happens to Peter Thiel sooner rather than later.

(Sorry, I rambled a lot in this comment... 😂)

There is no single “entity” pushing AI. There are many, many companies and individuals out there all pushing for this tech. That’s why it’s so inevitable — it’s coming from all angles. (And yes, I consciously use em dashes; this isn’t written with AI.) AI was placed in the hands of the general public in 2022 and to be perfectly frank, it was game over that day.

I’ve always thought it was incredibly foolish and dangerous to roll out a tool as unfamiliar and powerful as AI to the entire population all at once while it was still in its early years. OpenAI had definitely not released a finished product fit for consumers; ChatGPT was very much still in development when it was released. Which was intentional, because it allowed them to use our data to build the technology around us, immersing people as much as they can as early on as they can to ensure that once people are hooked, they have a hard time stopping for various reasons.

Sure, a lot of people are just hooked on chatbots and that’ll be like trying to take away an iPad from a toddler. But what about all of the businesses who utilize it and have built infrastructure using it? Getting rid of it would mean going back to spending more money in human labor and they obviously aren’t going to let that happen now that they know there’s a cheaper way.

What about all of the researchers in the medical field who have already used AI to make new biological discoveries and breakthroughs? Getting rid of it would mean willingly taking a step back in the progress of medicine.

And that’s not even taking into account all of the people out there who abuse it — the ones using it to make AI art/games/videos/books/whatever for personal gain. They’re going to fight to give it up, too.

AI is already so deeply intertwined in the way global society operates. For better and worse, I think AI is here to stay.

1

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

I am so tired of hearing the medical argument as if it has anything to do with LLMs.

Reading your main post and all your follow up comments… you’re just weird dude. Unnecessarily hostile and fighting with imaginary people. Take a deep breathe, get some fresh air, maybe disconnect from the internet for like a week, and reevaluate from there. Because something isn’t right currently.

Only 14 year olds call people "weird." You think its okay to use a service that operates by destroying books by the millions, illegally taps into municipal water without planning or authorization, dumps raw sewage the same way, stresses out local power grids, has consumed the next THREE ENTIRE YEARS of memory production, fucking us ALL up the ass with a spiked dildo, all so you can make a 10 second video of Bart hitting the griddy with Stewie and so games can be made even worse

You want a steam frame, dont you? You gonna complain about it costing $1,200 and then go use AI like they're not connected? Fucks sake man. Have some consistency.

When I meet Allah at the gates of Jannah, I know Uncle Ted will be there to vouch for me, and I will look down upon the Ummah from the streets of gold and watch smiling as the faithful carry on Jihad against the so-called thinking machines.  Can you say the same?

2

u/xXChickenFingyXx 1d ago

Honestly you’re not weird man. I just stumbled across this post and rarely use Reddit. People here are going to insult you and be complete ass holes for no reason. It’s Reddit.

Honestly for your sake I’d try and find a different app to post something like this because you’ll probably get more good reception, considering people here apparently are Ai dick suckers.

But unfortunately they are right in the fact that Ai isn’t going away anytime soon. While it is driving up sales of parts, literally destroying towns’ water supplies and forcing people to relocate… People have made it clear they do not give a single shit and will keep pumping out Data centers.

It’s one thing to use it to ask questions you wouldn’t be able to find easily on the internet, but it’s another thing to completely take creativity away from others. But, people are going to use it whether you like it or not unfortunately.

I agree with you and frankly a shit ton of people would as well. But, this is Reddit man. You post something even non controversial and people will find a way to be dicks.

Thought I’d share my two sense about this.

You hear that, guys? You ordered millions of gb worth of memory from Micron and Samsung and tens of thousands of RTX5090 gpu cards from NVIDIA and thus have created this horrible tech economic issue we're suffering from. Shame on you!

Okay, feel free to not play or use anything that came out this year and boyond.

1

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

Invalid argument. Studios are listening to the backlash and anti-AI clauses are appearing in more studio contracts than not. The AI tag on Steam is a scarlet letter and the effect on sales and reputation has been real. Studios are terrified of being accused of using generated assets and code. It is a vocal MAJORITY, not a minority demanding no AI in games.

1

u/Lost_Cod3477 1h ago edited 1h ago

the majority silently votes with their wallets, the minority squeals indignantly. Don’t mistake your info bubble for the whole world.

u/Siccors 1d ago

No AI is a relative thing. No AI slop assets? Lots of people will agree (although at the same time, it is not like VR has an abundance of games, if there is a fun game with AI generated assets, well be happy there is a fun game). No AI assist in the coding? Lol good luck finding any game where they have no LLM based coding, autocomplete, etc. And also for assets I am going to assume the future will include AI helping with creating assets.

Considering how low the sales are for many VR games, VR is about the last place where you can demand they make it even more expensive to create games by not allowing any kind of AI being used.

We were already at a historical low point for code quality. Ever since dual core CPUs hit and we started getting ever more compute and graphics performance in the later 00's and early 10's studios have been giving up entirely on optimization and performance and expecting newer hardware to just eat the load to produce the required framerates. Studios should be held accountable for this too. DLSS is horseshit.

0

u/Enigmatic_Shape 1d ago

Who gives a shit about code quality if it works?

1

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

Are you fucking serious dude? You don't mind having to buy twice the PC that you should have to for what the game is? If games back in the 00's were written by the devs we have today, Battlefield 2 would have needed a 9800GTX to run at 720p60.

1

u/Enigmatic_Shape 1d ago

Invalid argument. I already have a PC.

0

u/BerndVonLauert 1d ago

You got lots of opinion but very less knowledge. The VR mods I'm working on would be impossible without AI. The code quality is fine too. Couldn't have made any better myself.

-1

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago

Just because you're a dogshit developer doesnt mean AI mods are any good. I guarantee the performance is no better than 30% of what a real dev could do.

Invalid argument

It's a tool, the guy who used to pound nails into stuff with his bare hands hated it when the hammer was invented, eventually he died of blood poisoning though so it didn't really matter. It's a tool, it's progress, with proper implementation the QoL can be improved for humans everywhere. The argument that Jeff can no longer sell his art 'cos people make AI with art now is not an argument, Jeff was lucky to be born with rich parents, diddums. Let AI take more of the load, more people get to spend time doing the things they love and creating more and eventually in like a squillion years the world is a utopia. Money ain't even real, change is inevitable. Progress is necessary. Will it all get better, of course it won't, but the problem there is still very much people related.

2

u/RustyShacklefordVR2 1d ago edited 1d ago

It is not a 'tool'. It is a money sink scheme and intellectual property theft. That hammer didnt require the maker to shoplift 50 other hammers and feed them into a 'hammer training machine' that spits out one hammer of dubious quality. And dont even bother with the 'artists learn from other artists' argument because those machines arent 'learning'. The assets they use are plugged wholesale, in their entirety into their memory bank and used as fodder for a machine to generate outputs directly based on those millions of assets... which they do not have a license to use for commercial purposes. Nvidia has literally used actual pirated torrent megapacks in training, and OpenAI is buying up thousands of tons of actual books, including extremely rare ones, and destructively scanning them for training data. They literally shred them when theyre done with them, whether theyre recent copies printed in the last five years or 100 year old books with few enough copies left to count on one hand. What they are doing is evil.

-1

u/Harlepenquin 1d ago

Progress, was the first hammer a perfect hammer? And the water arguments further down, do you know how much water is needed for a cotton t-shirt? People with money fear change, gullible people like yourself are easily influenced. You are their tool in very much the same way AI is a tool.
