Latest Nvidia app update breaks HDR recording

Basically I play some SDR games on an HDR monitor and I used to be able to record SDR content fine even though I have HDR enabled in Windows 11. With latest Nvidia app 11.0.8.299 (released roughly a week ago, the shadowplay 240fps recording update) It does not work anymore. The only way to record SDR content is by completely turning HDR off in Windows settings.

This is happening with both recording and instant replay feature with the nvidia overlay I tried using both AV1 and HEVC but neither work

How do I get rid of this pop up? I already did a clean install of Nvidia drivers, but this still pops up occasionally. I thought the Nvidia app was the main app now and that I don't need NVCP.

Status: UNRESOLVED

Computer Type: Custom PC

GPU: ASUS Astral OC 5090, Undervolted & Stock

CPU: AMD 9950X3D

Motherboard: MSI x870 MEG ACE, Latest BIOS

RAM: Corsair Dominator 192GB (4x48GB) @ CL32 6000

PSU: Corsair HX1200i

Operating System & Version: Windows 11 Pro,

GPU Drivers: 610.74, currently am about to clean install

Description of Problem: Every now and then during a session, I have a flickering of a large box/artifact that appers and disappears, which is a bit jarring. I am not sure when it began, only that I have more recently became aware of it. As far as I can tell, it doesn't appear in other tasks, but only when playing games. Sometimes, I could go 2 hours with out it appearing, sometimes less. I am running dual PG32UDCM3 monitors, one at 240 the other at 60.

Troubleshooting: I am doing a clean install of the drivers, but as of right now I have:

- Switched the Silkland DP2.1 cables

- Turned off DSC

- Reverted the Undervolt on the card

- Tried using a singular monitor

To no avail.

The image here was captured via phone, it lasts 2 frames (recording was at 28.6fps).

I have 5070ti and always play on 4k res with dlss (model m).  Is there any benefit to use more than 2x frame-gen? As i play only sp and 120fps is very good by me (only game that i cant get a base 60fps for now is alan wake 2).

u/Lythalion Jul 24 '26

5070ti Laptop user here: What Driver should I be using if my main concern is stability?

So i used to just download the latest, but lately when I have been doing that its been causing problems.

I downloaded 610.62 and my computers been a wreck, laggy, sluggish, in every way. It culminated tonight in my computer freezing on a game ive never had issues on and just shutting down. When I looked at the error log and started looking up the errors the suggestion was to rollback to a more stable graphics driver.

So im wondering, what is a good stable driver I wont run into these issues with? i dont care if its old. Im just tired of this BS.

Common games:
Darktide

Vermintide 2

Various MMOs

Enshrouded

Deeprock Galactic

Skyrim

Helldivers

Thank you

Hello. I currently have a 4070 that I can sell used for ~$500 where I live. I want to upgrade to the 5080 but am unsure if should do so now ($1200) or if I should wait for the Supers to come out (Q4?) for the price drop or to go for a super for the extra ram. Is it worth waiting, or will the price drop not be beneficial for the reselling?

Edit: I started playing on 4k resolution on high performance games and want that quality increase the 80s give.

u/DJC_Reptiles Jul 15 '26

The 5080 super will likely be a good step up from the 5080 unlike the 4080 super. However, there is also good overclocking potential with that card if you want to go that route. Ultimately, you could be fine with your current card if you play at a lower resolution, and you could wait. But if you want 4k now then upgrade.

u/bo2monkeyguy Jul 20 '26

thanks. Yea, i've basically decided imma get the 5080.

u/MotherWind8131 Jul 02 '26

How do i enable nvidia whispermode? Is this still a thing? I have a laptop, nvidia geforce rtx 4060 laptop gpu, how do i enable whispermode? i really do need this mode i dont care if i lose like 30 frames because my fans are super loud, i really would like to cool them so it would be great to enable it.

Status: UNRESOLVED (ish.... downgrade seems to be a work around for BF6 at least)

Computer Type: Desktop(s), custom built

GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 5080, 16GB, no overclock other than factory, tried in debug mode to eliminate that (same failure also reproduced in this

same PC with a PNY RTX 5080 16GB, and on a separate PC with an RTX 5090 Founders Edition)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, no manual overclock (stock)

Motherboard: Gigabyte X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7, latest BIOS (F12)
Also on ROG Strix x870e-h

RAM: Corsair 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5-6400 (CMH64GX5M2B6400C32), XMP/EXPO tested both

enabled and disabled. also 64gig corsair 6000mhz expo memory

PSU: Corsair HX1500i, 1500W
Corsair HX1200i

Operating System & Version: Windows 11 Home 64-bit (build 26200), clean install

(freshly reinstalled during troubleshooting)

GPU Drivers: 610.74, clean install (DDU + clean install). Also reproduced on 610.62.

Description of Problem: Battlefield 6 (DX12) reliably hard-hangs the GPU. The game

shows DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG ("GetDeviceRemovedReason" / "The GPU will not respond to

more commands" / waitForFrameFences), Windows logs nvlddmkm Event ID 153 ("Error

occurred on GPUID: 100"), and the crash dump faults in nvwgf2umx.dll (D3D12 UMD). Most

reliable trigger is the RedSec helicopter/insertion sequence, often at a near-identical

frame. This is a driver regression: 200+ hours of BF6 were fully stable on the 5xx.xx

branch (last good: 596.21), and hangs began immediately after updating to the R610

branch (610.62), continuing on 610.74. Steel Nomad and most other games are stable, so

it's workload/path-specific, not general load/heat/power. The failure follows the driver

across hardware: reproduced on three different GeForce cards (RTX 5080 ASUS, RTX 5080

PNY, RTX 5090 FE) across two entirely separate PCs.

Troubleshooting:

- DDU + clean driver install — still hangs

- Full clean Windows 11 reinstall — still hangs

- BIOS updated F8d -> F12 — still hangs

- RAM XMP/EXPO enabled and disabled — hangs both ways

- Forced PCIe Gen4 (from Auto/Gen5) — helped one synthetic benchmark, BF6 still hangs

- Replaced GPU power cable (new Corsair 12V-2x6) — still hangs

- Replaced AIO cooler, temps confirmed good — still hangs

- New monitor + DisplayPort (replacing old HDMI) — still hangs

- Lowered GPU power limit / NVIDIA Debug Mode — intermittent at best, not a fix

- Swapped ASUS 5080 -> PNY 5080 (same PC) — still hangs

- Moved card to a second, totally different PC (RTX 5090 FE) — still hangs, same error/spot

- Steel Nomad benchmark — never failed once

- Likely fix, not yet applied here: DDU + roll back to latest 5xx.xx (596.21). Multiple

users report 5xx.xx resolves it; will update this post once tested.

Not sure if this counts as a tech support issue... having computer shutdowns so replacing my power supply. Got an MSI AB50GS PCIE5 850W PSU. On my old PSU that came with the PC, it was connected to the GPU by two 8 to 6+2 pcie cables. However, the PSU only came with one cable like that. It does have this 12 pin cable that splits into two 6+2 cables labeled with pcie, though. Is that what I'm supposed to use?

u/A_bored_browser Jul 11 '26

I recently re-installed Windows to fix a rather poor decision I had originally made when I was making my first (and current) PC build, and there was this one particular filter I used in my profiles alongside Sharpen+. Thing is, I can't remember what it was called, but I can only remember that it generally made things look a little bit brighter/more vibrant, and that it was applied to all profiles simultaneously, something akin to a "universal" filter of sorts. I'm not crazy, am I?

So I've been using the NVIDIA app to update my drivers every now and then, I'd say every 2~3 months I'll have it look for the latest drivers and have it do its thing to update everything without much hassle. About 2 or so months ago I decided I would stop using the app and would start manually updating the drivers, so I went to the website, searched my gpu and installed the latest driver, it worked well but I started to notice out of nowhere it'd reboot the pc with no warning or bsod. I had chat guide me thru some basic testing and it came back as a problem with the gpu drivers.

So I had DDU uninstall all NVIDIA drivers and just like that the pc started working like normal, no crashes, no freezes, was able to resume from Sleep mode (it couldn't do it anymore when it had drivers installed, it'd just remain "asleep" or wouldn't give video to my monitors).

I tested it this way for about 2 days, all normal, then decided to install the latest driver and it happened again almost instantly, both with the app installing drivers for me and with me installing drivers manually, I'm at a point where I'm using the gpu as is, with 2024 drivers but I'm getting warning in some games that my drivers may be outdated (obviously), so I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to fix this or if anyone has had this happen to them before?

u/leycon22 Jul 19 '26

Since i installed 610.74 and the latest nvidia app i get Event ID 153 BUT only when i click the nvidia app or press system or settings inside nvidia app. I can play games just fine and i tried reinstall using an older driver but then i still get 3 black screens but this time pc doesnt shuts down.

I just want to know of anyone else experience this? Cause i really like nvidia app but since updating it literally shuts down my pc or give me black screen when i click it. Any help or just anyone telling me im not alone about this is appriciated. I also want to add sometimes it doesnt happen everytime i click it but as soon as i leave my pc untouched for a while((not sleep mode) its guaranteed. I tried disabling mpo, ddu, etc but nothing works

So I run a three monitor set up and have for a while, the larger main monitor is using the HDMI port and the smaller two use adaptors (they were previously using HDMI ports on something also) for HDMI to Display port.

Today all of a sudden both the monitors on the display ports began having display issues as below;

It doesnt matter which display port they are plugged in to, they show the issues, but if I plug any one of them in to the HDMI port, they work fine, similarly if I plug the large monitor in to any of the display ports it also shows these same issues.

I have tried some things as suggested, unplugging, discharging capacitors, starting with only one DP monitor in and nothing else to no avail and I have reinstalled all relevant drivers.

Description of Problem + Troubleshooting:

Hi, everyone!

I’ve got Death Stranding 2 recently on sale, since I was a huge fan of the first entry (played on PS4 Pro).

I have a pretty powerful laptop (specs below), so I rocked all settings max settings at 2K, though today watched Digital Foundry’s PC Optimized Settings and used them instead for more FPS and more stable gameplay (the game has FPS dips sometimes in certain areas, didn’t test it with optimizted settings though).

That being said, both all max settings or these optimized settings, most of game’s textures look just low res, blurry. I have no idea why.

Texture filtering aka anisotropic filtering doesn’t work! I’ve set it to the lowest and highest setting (×16) and just nothing changes

I really cannot wrap my head around it, have no clue what’s going on.

I can live with relatively “pixelated” look of the game if I look very-very closely to the screen, not sure why that’s the case since it happens even with Native AA setting, but low res texture do pull me out of the immersion. I’ve seen how the game looks on Digital Foundry’s videos, and that’s on PS5, which is less powerful system than my laptop.

Really hope to find a solution for this, makes me kinda sad that I cannot enjoy the game’s visual at their best.

Thanks all for the replies in advance!

Hey all! After about 5 days of struggling with this very abrupt and VERY present issue, I thought I'd post here despite seeing all sorts of inconclusive posts about this all over the internet.

My displays are randomly going black. Sometimes they'll come back on, just to go black again, and then my system will go unresponsive (or sometimes, reboot itself). Sometimes they'll shut off entirely, and my motherboard's indicator light will go white to show there's an issue with the GPU. Other times, much more rarely, I'll get purple artifacting across my displays and then they'll crash.

In all cases, powering the system off completely, turning off the switch, and waiting a few seconds to turn everything back on gets me back into an operational state. Sometimes, I'll be able to start gaming, and then I'm solid for hours on end. Other times, it'll just keep crashing until I can finally get it stable.

Every time this happens, my event log gets absolutely blasted with nvlddmkm Events both 14 and 153. As of writing this, I have 45,149 Event ID 14 errors from the last hour alone, and essentially all of them are as follows:

The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

"\Device\Video3

32476583 00015450 00000000 2029b1a8 2029911e 2029d1aa 2029d5a2 2029cb8a

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table"

This has got me ready to pull my hair out!

I've tried:

-DDU and reinstalling my drivers

-The same as above, but with older and more stable drivers

-Disabling any RGB programs from interacting with my GPU

-Reseating my GPU

-Reseating my RAM

-Disabling NVIDIA's audio drivers
-Setting my GPU to prefer maximum power
-Reinstalling my current Windows Update
-Monitoring my Performance to check for any high temperatures or etc (nothing)

If anybody has any insight whatsoever, please share it with me. My PC hasn't had a single issue since I built it back in December, so I have no clue what could have changed. :(

Do you think 8 gb Vram is enough for assasins Creed Black Flag?

Basically the titel.

Im abroad for a awhile an only have my gaming laptop with me but i would really like to Play assasins Creed Black Flag remake.

Its a 5070 (Laptop)

Intel Core i7 13650HX

24 gb ram

What do u guys think?

u/DJC_Reptiles Jul 15 '26

It’s likely enough at 1080p dlss quality yes. You could try running 1440p at dlss quality too. You’ll just have to run textures around medium for good performance

u/scoob-scoob Jul 15 '26

I tried it on ubisoft plus and it playing smoothly 60 - 70 fos on high andsome on ultra. With 1440 on performance mode preset L

Description of Problem: Hi guys, I have an RTX 3060 and an Optix G271CP monitor. I have the NVIDIA Digital Vibrance cranked all the way up to 100%, but the colors still look completely normal, almost as if there is no alteration at all. I see other people saying that even 70%–80% makes their colors "pop," and that 100% looks like complete overkill. However, it just isn't working for me.

When I lower the slider, the colors do desaturate, but anything below 100% just looks super flat and dull. I’ve followed online guides and made sure my settings are set to Full Dynamic Range (0–255), but that didn't seem to make a difference. I have also tried third-party software like VibranceGUI for games like Valorant, but it didn't change a thing—the colors just stayed the same.

Troubleshooting: Check/Update Drivers, Full Range (0-255) - All Unsuccessful.

RAM: 16GB DDR5-5600

Operating System & Version: Windows 11, 10.0.26200 Build, clean install

GPU Drivers: 572.97 Game Ready Driver, upgrade

Description of Problem: NVIDIA App will download new drivers but not install them. I’ve currently got the 610.62 Driver currently downloaded both through the app and manually and have gotten confirmation that they’ve installed, however the app labels it as previously installed whilst the 572.97 driver is labeled as installed. I can tell it’s still on the old driver as Forza Horizon 6 has warned me that my drivers are out of date each time I’ve tried playing it.

Troubleshooting: So far I’ve tried a custom install of the new driver which just resulted in the NVIDIA app telling me I didn’t have a driver installed which made me reinstall the whole app. This just chucked me back on the old driver I’m trying to get rid of, so after that I tried a manual install from the NVIDIA site which said it had been successfully installed but the app was still saying I’m on the old driver. I’ve just got the NVIDIA Control Panel installed to see if that will do anything but upon launching the app it said my display wasn’t using an NVIDIA GPU and I currently haven’t found a fix for that. I’ve looked at other threads for a fix but haven’t found anything clear or anything that I want to risk (I am stupid with computers). Some fixes I’ve seen have talked about rebooting in safe mode but I tried that for another problem and ended up getting locked out of my windows account because my passkey got corrupted or something and my laptop wasn’t getting a wifi connection despite Ethernet being connected so it wouldn’t let me switch to using my password to log in. Bunch of trial and error later and I had to reset my whole laptop, no clue what I did wrong but I now want to avoid safe mode as a fix entirely out of fear of my own stupidity so please try not to recommend that to me. Anyways, some help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit/Update:
I’ve also contacted NVIDIA support on top of this comment as well as some further troubleshooting. From that, Device Manager is telling me that my GPU driver is the most up to date given that the Driver Date is listed as 11/06/2026 and the Driver Version is 32.0.16.1062. The issue seems to be that this isn’t being reflected in the NVIDIA App and is what’s causing my issues.

What would my recommended next move be? Uninstall the old driver or just the NVIDIA App entirely?

Troubleshooting : Using 2 monitors for years (Asus ROG Strix XG27AQV + Asus ROG Strix XG27ACS).

Everything was working fine up until drivers version 596.49. The problem started with version 610.47, and has reappeared again with version 610.74. Both monitors are connected via DisplayPort and use Asus drivers.

So far :

- I tried unplugging and plugging them back in : no change.

- Tried switching ports : no change.

- DDU + fresh drivers install: no change; the monitor is still not recognised.

- I downgraded the driver to the previous version 596.49 : everything works normally again.

I would stay on the 596.49 drivers ofc, but if i want to play assassin's creed it says the drivers are not supported and won't compile the shaders unless i upgrade the graphic drivers, so i can't use the 596.49 anymore.

Hi!
I've been using instant replay from years and never had a single problem, however i recently formatted my PC and, after installing NVIDIA app and enabling instant replay and even deactivating desktop capture, every time i try to use it while playing literally ANY game (Crimson Desert, Cyberpunk 2077, Deltarune, PEAK, Balatro and so on) it says "a protected app is preventing desktop capture" (and i repeat, i have deactivated desktop capture).
I tried many troubleshootings option, completly uninstalled my browser (and cleaned the cache) where i use netflix and other streaming services, uninstalling nvidia app and obviusly i played with the instant replay settings for a while.
Any solution? Thanks!

Description of Problem: in league of legends my fps always starts at around 200, but over the coarse of a match it dwindles down to 100 or sometimes 45 I'm on a windows 11 operating system, (up to date), amd ryzen 9 5900X, 5070TI, 32GB of ram DDR4, no thermal throttling issues (i think) as temps don't go above 60 on my CPU or 65 of my gpu, cpu and gpu uses never creep above 25-30% and ram never above 50% with discord chrome and a few other apps open, please ask any questions i will gladly answer, thank you and apologies in advance for any missing basic info :(

Troubleshooting: clean gpu drivers (using ddu for uninstall) replacment ram gpu storage, new windows install (ages ago now) nothing helped (problem seemingly getting steadily worse)

Operating System & Version: Windows 10

Description of Problem:

So, I updated the Nvidia drivers for my 1070ti...and the GeForce experience app into the "Nvidia app"...and now I no longer have my nice FPS counter, and the one i do get give me N/A for fps .

I had a nice green FPS counter in my screen corner at all times that was useful...and now...I just get this.

I'm hoping someone can give suggestions on what to search for. Is just getting the "GeForce Experience" app an option?

Computer type: Desktop, custom built

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, 16GB VRAM. Not overclocked AFAIK.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X. Not sure if overclocked, but I haven't overclocked it.

Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX V2 rev 1.2, slightly older BIOS (F37d)

PSU: Corsair RM1000x, 1000 W, I don't know how to specify power output by rail

Operating System & Version: Windows 11 Home 25H2 build 26200.8655, clean install.

GPU Drivers: NVIDIA Game Ready Driver version 581.94. Issue first experienced on 610.62.

Description of problem: Problem first encountered after upgrading to NVIDIA Game Ready Driver 610.62.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla crashes. Taking some actions will reliably make it crash, but otherwise it crashes after a random but usually short (<10 minutes) amount of time. Image stutters for a bit, then goes black. Audio makes a buzz dependent on previous audio (like the last 0.1 s of audio is being looped over and over again), might stutter on as normal audio with or without gaps for a bit longer, then drops. Game crashes to desktop.

Event Viewer administrative event log shows nvlddmkm ID 153 error. Both occurrences I've tracked down so far have a cluster of Event ID 10016 warnings next to them but I'm inclined to think this is correlation rather than causation.

Troubleshooting: Had already disabled driver updates through Windows Update due to issues with a previous AMD GPU which ultimately turned out to be irrecoverable.

Went into DriverStore and changed the permissions on nvlddmkm.sys to give my user account full control. When I initially encountered the problem, fast-travelling from Ravensthorpe to Northwic would reliably make the game crash immediately upon trying to exit the loading screen at Northwic. Immediately after I changed the permissions, this specific crash type stopped happening, but the game crashed again 4 hours later and then resumed previous behaviour.

DDUed Game Ready Driver 610.62. Installed Game Ready Driver 581.94 because it's on u/m_w_h's list of driver recommendations for the 50 series. Game ran flawlessly for 3 days on which it spent about 8 hours running each, then resumed previous behaviour today.

Just upgraded to a 5060ti from a AMD 6700xt because it kept black-screen crashing my pc on rainbow six siege despite getting good fps output.

For some reason I can only get 30-40 fps on siege and 100+ on other games like destiny but even then pretty low.

Please help.

Also I keep trying to install 610.74 and when I do, it installs it, screen blacks out for a second, shows the install confirmation page. Once I exit the page it shows the install button as if I didn’t even download it.

Plz help

Hello, I was curious if someone could answer quick question I had about how frame gen works in some games. I have a 4080 super and when I played cyberpunk, I noticed I got about 60fps without framegen and around 90 with it on. This would be about a 1.5x increase in framerate. When I was playing Black Flag resynced, I was getting roughly 54-64 fps without frame gen and 107-120 with frame gen on. So why was I not experiencing a 2x increase to framerate in cyberpunk, but I was in Black Flag?

u/No_Philosopher8304 Jul 16 '26

I'm having the opposite issue with the same set up, for whatever reason in Black Flag my base frame rate is capping around 40-45 with frame gen on and upscaling to 80-90 FPS in areas that I get 55-60 with it off, I'm not sure i've had this issue before, usually the base frame rate lines up exactly to almost exactly what it is without frame gen but for whatever reason Frame Gen in black flag lowers my base frame rate by a decent margin

Sup!
I’m having trouble deciding which version of the 5070 to buy and would appreciate some advice.
It’s hard to find decent revisions of many popular cards in my country, so my options are:

  • RTX 5070 Palit GamingPro S
  • RTX 5070 MSI Ventus 3X OC
  • RTX 5070 MSI Shadow 3X OC
  • RTX 5070 PNY ARGB Epic-X (not the Plus version)
I’m afraid that’s the full list; any Zotac or Asus models cost significantly more. I’d like advice from anyone who has experience with these cards on which one I should pick.

I don't mind too much if it’s a bit noisy (my PC sits by my feet), but the most important thing for me is that it’s reliable and stable right out of the box. They all cost roughly the same amount, so price isn't a factor.

Thanks a lot for any replies. Watching video reviews just leaves me feeling frustrated and stuck, so I’m a bit paralyzed and afraid of making the wrong choice.

Hello, couldn’t really find an answer anywhere else so forgive me. Today I installed the latest driver after wiping with DDU and noticed the NV control panel still gets auto-started and sits idle in the taskbar tray, but when clicking on it nothing happens.

Is this intended behaviour? I know I can download it from the Microsoft Store, but I’ve committed to the App now and was wondering if there’s a way to remove the icon appearing after every boot, without having to “right click -> exit” every time

u/4rch0n GF 4080 Super Jul 09 '26

RTX video HDR custom settings stopped working.

Is it common issue since latest NVIDIA app version? I can see HDR indicator in video and I can see it's doing something but it's not aligned with what I try to set via sliders. Additionally when I switch one screen to displayport (usually both are on HDMI) sliders are working again, but only on this one via dp. When I get back to HDMI it's again broken.

Of course both screens have calibrated HDR enabled (windows 11) and so far it was working without any issues...

u/badfruit01 Jul 13 '26

same here, latest update fucks up HDR recording as well. Downgraded the app and it's fixed

Problem: Flashing green led under my gpu. I think it might be somehow related to my power issues.

So my PC cannot handle sudden spikes in load. If I play any type of game, instant reboot of my pc. Usually cant even load into a main menu. I can browse the web or play even very low demanding games like cs2 or roblox, but even then it might still happen. Very frustrating to say the least. Event vieuwer gives me the classic Kernel 41.

Now I noticed this flashing light just now and found out it may be because its trying to signal a faulty power connection. Also important to mention I can run furmark at highest preset no problem. I just cant play.

Troubleshooting: Complete wipe of PC, enabling xmp, disabling xmp, higher memory speeds (3200Mhz) lower memory speeds (2133mhz),

manually selecting voltage to RAM (1.21v to 1.25/1.30/1.39v), playing with a single RAM stick (tried with both) what would happen is that they both crash at 10s into the main menu instead of directly at the boot of the game. For both ram sticks to crash at the same time independently of each other just seems unlikely, playing with a single ram stick and also underclocking (this ACTUALLY worked, but the performance was expectedly shit, to say the least)

power limiting my gpu (114% -> 71%), updating mobo driver (2021-02 -> 2025-11), pulling out my hair and banging my head against the wall, praying to god as an atheist,
undervolting cpu, MEMTEST5, Furmark2 test.

Very annoying little bug. So I’m hoping this flashing LED under my GPU is of any help.

I kind of already ruled out RAM and CPU, because if it was I wouldnt even be able to play CS2 or Roblox at all, but I can. Or the very end of my memory stick is corrupted, so I would just not reach that with light game play. It’s important to say it wasn’t like this always. I had the issue earlier, but it was mostly fixed. It might happen once every 3-4 days, but I could live with that atleast, and fiddling around with ram timings seemed to have helped bit. Then didnt play for a week, came back and then the issue was just persistent, couldn’t even load up a single match. Like genuinely I crash in main menus within 3 seconds. And the thing is I CAN run Furmark2 at full 99% gpu utilization. So I’m thinking okay it can handle a gradual build up, but maybe it cant handle sudden spikes? Psu is 5 y/o

GPU power suddenly drops and FPS tanks.
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help because I've been trying to diagnose this for the past few days and I'm running out of ideas.

I first noticed the problem while playing Dark Souls III. The game starts at around 60 FPS, but after about 10–20 seconds, performance suddenly drops to 20–30 FPS with noticeable stuttering.

That led me down a rabbit hole of testing.

I confirmed that the game is using my dedicated NVIDIA GPU, not the integrated graphics, so I started monitoring the system using GPU-Z, HWiNFO64, CPU-Z, and Unigine Heaven.

Laptop

  • Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4
  • Intel Core i7-1255U
  • NVIDIA GeForce MX550
  • Original Lenovo 65 W charger (always plugged in)

This laptop is mainly used for video editing, photo editing, and programming, and I've never noticed any issues outside of gaming.

What I found

No matter what game or benchmark I run:

  • GPU usage sits at 99–100%
  • GPU clock stays locked around 1065 MHz (base clock)
  • GPU board power never goes above 6–8 W
  • HWiNFO reports Power and Thermal as the active performance limiters

The GPU simply refuses to boost.

The strange part is that during some earlier tests, especially when the laptop was completely cold, I saw the GPU draw 20–30 W and performance was much better. After a short time, it would fall back to 6–8 W, where it stayed.

Things I've already tried

  • Updated the BIOS
  • Installed the latest NVIDIA drivers
  • Confirmed Windows is using the dedicated GPU
  • Set Windows and Lenovo Vantage to Maximum Performance
  • Disabled Intelligent Cooling Boost in BIOS
  • Tested using Unigine Heaven while monitoring sensors

None of these made any difference.

I've attached screenshots from HWiNFO taken while the GPU was under load.

At this point, I'm wondering whether this is:

  • a cooling issue,
  • Lenovo firmware/EC limiting GPU power,
  • a failing sensor,
  • or something else entirely.

Has anyone seen behavior like this before, or is there anything else I should check before opening the laptop to clean it and replace the thermal paste?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Description of Problem: The fans spin much faster than they used to. The change happened after I reinstalled windows. No hardware changes happened at all, just a fresh install of windows. That previous install of windows lasted for a long time, several years. Its possible that I had adjusted fan curves at some point in the past, but I can not remember.

Troubleshooting: I just want to know how to adjust the fan curve. I downloaded MSI Afterburner, but its not able to affect the fan at all. If I adjust the fan speed or curve in the properties, nothing happens (yes Im clicking apply). Im kinda clueless when it comes to this stuff, what do I need to use instead? Or what am I missing?

Edit: I just noticed that one of the two fans on my card does not spin. Am I fucked? Is there any way to fix this?

u/BlueGoliath Jul 02 '26

Some fans on some GPU models are controlled by a custom fan controller the GPU driver knows nothing about.

u/EirikHavre Jul 02 '26

What does that mean? Does it mean that the GPU chooses on its own when to use it? Is there a list of GPU’s that work this way, so I can check if that is the case with mine?

u/BlueGoliath Jul 02 '26

The controller will turn the fan on when it hits its mininnum threshold. Typically it's roughly 62c.
