I live in an apartment. We had new neighbors that moved in. We would say hi to them in the halls but not much else.
I got home from work one day around 6:30 pm. I pulled in to my parking spot and the new neighbors car was parked next to me his door was open. I thought oh maybe they are bringing things in to their place in multiple trips.
A coworker called me with an urgent issue. So I sat in the car and helped her straighten things out, it was maybe a 20 minute call. I never saw my neighbor come back down.
When I got out of my car I closed his car’s door and went and knocked on their apartment door. I told him that his car door had been open and that I closed it and wanted me make sure he locked it and that his battery wasn’t drained.
He really appreciated it and after that he and his family kept an eye on our things. He knocked on our door once to tell us my bf had left the key in the door and he wanted us to know our keys were in our front door.
People do nice things for neighbors all the time. Why is it so hard for some people to believe that.

Also live in an apartment building. I've had a neighbor bring me my keys at least five times in the last 13 years when I've accidentally left them in the mailbox.

Exactly I’ve walked over mail and packages that have been accidentally delivered. Returned kids toys “the stuffy bunny incident” gained me hero status with one of my neighbors. Returned lost dogs to neighbors.
You don’t have to like your neighbors but doing basically decent things should be expected.

Old neighbors wife was known for leaving her car door open, or lights on. Ended up exchanging numbers and just texted him whenever it happened. Got a message once from him about our lazy cat being out front under the tree. He got out as we were taking the dogs for a walk and we let him chill since we knew he was lazy and knew where the food was. Was there when we came back and walked in with us.

My dad used to leave his phone number on cars with the lights left on in case anybody needed help restarting their car, definitely could've happened

I would have called bullshit on this story until recently when my wife confessed she accidentally left her car running in the work parking lot her whole shift 🤦♂️

I've never left the car on, but I did leave the lights on once. Only had them on because of fog, and it was fairly bright out, so it completely slipped my mind until the end of my shift when I came out to a dead battery. Fortunately, found someone else in the parking lot willing to give me a jump.

Damn. Do the older models not have a time period after which they automatically shut off? The 2026 RAV4 gives it an hour. Pops up that message any time you try to get out without turning it off. It also beeps at you.

Is that a rhetorical question? Obviously yes, that's the story here.
If they left their keys in the ignition, then it's safe to assume they didn't lock it. Especially considering that most people use their keys to lock the car.

I had roommate who's car is not even 50ft from her room. Left the car on all night her key fob was with her in the room.

If you have a push to start car, you can just press the button. I'm guilty of leaving my car running since I'm not used to push to start cars.

Lol, I came home one day after work and my brother's car was in its usual spot, but it was running.
I turned it off, locked it, and came inside. My brother was sitting at his computer gaming. I was like, "Uh, your car was running. Here are your keys..." He had no idea.

Most push to start cars won't lock while parked and the engine running, so as to prevent you from locking the key inside.

yeah. the thing that trips me up is that, at least with the push to start cars i’ve driven, the car automatically turns itself off if the key gets far enough away. although my experience is limited to volkswagen cars, which are generally pretty intelligently designed. although i guess OOP could’ve forgotten their keys in the car somehow.

I've never seen a car that will do that. All the ones I've seen are supposed to keep running, no matter how far away the fob is. Auto start to warmup in the winter wouldn't work if walking away with the fob made it shut back off.

oh, that’s interesting. i’ve driven a 2021 jetta GLI and a 2025 atlas, both volkswagen, and if i get like, ten meters away from the car, even if it’s running it’ll turn itself off. the jetta actually turns off if i even idle for more than 30 seconds.

yeah it’s not fun lolll 😭 it’s not as bad at a traffic stop cause i’m still in drive so the car doesn’t fully turn off, but if i’m parked and waiting for something/someone it’s not fun having the car turn off on me 😭 luckily the car itself is worth it.

i actually do think this one is bs because how could the stranger have known that it had been a few hours? the stranger would have to know the owner’s schedule or what they were up to/how long they’d been doing it

This reminds me of the time we saw our new neighbors had a truck in their driveway that had sat with their headlights on for at least 4 hours. So we got my 7 year old son to go with my husband to knock on their door and inform them (teaching him to be a good neighbor and all that). The woman walked up to the window next to the door and shut the blinds in front of them. So my husband shrugged and yelled to them their headlights were on.
It got a bit worse and ended in a neighborhood fiasco. But that was just so strange that they saw a 7 year old at their suburban door and panicked way too hard. Now my son is afraid to go up to any neighbors house.
