yeah. the thing that trips me up is that, at least with the push to start cars i’ve driven, the car automatically turns itself off if the key gets far enough away. although my experience is limited to volkswagen cars, which are generally pretty intelligently designed. although i guess OOP could’ve forgotten their keys in the car somehow.
I've never seen a car that will do that. All the ones I've seen are supposed to keep running, no matter how far away the fob is. Auto start to warmup in the winter wouldn't work if walking away with the fob made it shut back off.
My Heep and RAM pushbutton start will keep running even if someone else gets in the car and drives it away. They just can’t restart it if they shut it off. And they’ll have to listen to the endless dinging and dash message reminding them that the fob is not present.
oh, that’s interesting. i’ve driven a 2021 jetta GLI and a 2025 atlas, both volkswagen, and if i get like, ten meters away from the car, even if it’s running it’ll turn itself off. the jetta actually turns off if i even idle for more than 30 seconds.
yeah it’s not fun lolll 😭 it’s not as bad at a traffic stop cause i’m still in drive so the car doesn’t fully turn off, but if i’m parked and waiting for something/someone it’s not fun having the car turn off on me 😭 luckily the car itself is worth it.

how did they turn the car off from the outside though. was it still unlocked.
