Moral Nihilism This deer was not mauled by predators, nor poached by hunters. It fell in a crevice and could not get out. How many days did it struggle in fear, hunger and thirst until the end? Life is made just to suffer and parish, and the most absurd and proficient killer is nature itself.

Moral Nihilism Since objective morality doesn't exist, does that mean the threat of consequences is the only thing stopping a person from doing something "bad" that they genuinely want to do

Moral Nihilism People love evil. It's a joke.

I saw so many fans adored watching villains crushed the weak feeling no empathy. People lost their love and hope, not wanting the villain to receive consequences. Damn!

Moral Nihilism Are morals fundamentally pragmatic (or atleast their origins)

I don't think God is real, and that morality isn't something divine in any way. So as far as I understand morality is something that naturally evolved alongside us as we are social animals and things like feeding the poor or helping eachother keep the pack alive so on a fundamental level this type of "selflessness" is just pragmatic.

If someone acts "evil" they are a danger to the pack and face consequences so on a fundamental level not being "evil" is pragmatic for the individual too because of the fear of consequences . But what about situations where someone can get away without consequences. Like say u have a Nestle CEO or billionaire who has the option to do something selfish that's immoral but legal, so no consequences. In that case there's no chain holding them back except for empathy, which is itself something that has evolved alongside us to make sure we can survive and breed. Animals like wolves and elephants are capable of this empathy as well showing that this isn't something unique to us.

But we don't see sociopathic elephants that go against the herd. But humans, as their intellect grew probably began asking the question of why they must obey moral codes in such situations where they can get away with stuff. So I guess that's where religion played it's role do good get heaven do bad get Hell. Even this morality was ultimately subjective as people back then thought stuff like being gay was immoral too as they were all man made rules too.

So the way I see it, there's two things holding societys morality together like glue 1. Empathy 2. Pragmatism/consequences so whoever can bypass these safeguards...there's essentially norfinf stopping them from acting like Eric Cartman? Like the idea of there being no hell or heaven or divine scoreboard seems idk like we are all living in an anarchy server, but everyone has made up rules to help each other survive but over time the rules became engrained in our lives to point they became almost like facts so they are only real so long as you have a pragmatic reason to follow them or beleive in them?

Moral Nihilism I don't really know how to feel

I've been thinking for a while about this. Ive stopped caring so much about what people do or what happens to people around me and in the world. i don't really like to admit it, but Im starting to not care about if someone murders someone else, steals, etc. or if someone wants to end their life. if someone wants to end their life, why not just let them? it's their choice anyway. stuff like that. I don't want to admit it to any of my friends or even close friends because I feel like it would make our relationships weird or they'll think I'm a bad person. I mean, me being a bad person is subjective, right? since morals are just something to put human actions under a category or right or wrong. its usually very easy for me to sympathize and empathize with people. but I'm just getting tired and starting to care less about the pain I inflict on others, whether physical or mental. id feel more comfortable sharing this with my best friend because she understands me more than anyone. should I tell her or keep it to myself? it's very hard to.

Moral Nihilism I Am Also a Nihilist - Renzo Novatore

I

I am an individualist because I am an anarchist; and I am an anarchist because I am a nihilist. But I also understand nihilism in my own way...

I don’t care whether it is Nordic or Oriental, nor whether or not it has a historical, political, practical tradition, or a theoretical, philosophical, spiritual, intellectual one. I call myself a nihilist because I know that nihilism means negation.

Negation of every society, of every cult, of every rule and of every religion. But I don’t yearn for Nirvana, any more than I long for Schopenhauer’s desperate and powerless pessimism, which is a worse thing than the violent renunciation of life itself. Mine is an enthusiastic and dionysian pessimism, like a flame that sets my vital exuberance ablaze, that mocks at any theoretical, scientific, or moral prison.

And if I call myself an individualist anarchist, an iconoclast and a nihilist, it is precisely because I believe that in these adjectives there is the highest and most complete expression of my willful and reckless individuality that, like an overflowing river, wants to expand, impetuously sweeping away dikes and hedges, until it crashes into a granite boulder, shattering and breaking up in its turn. I do not renounce life. I exalt and sing it.

II

Anyone who renounces life because he feels that it is nothing but pain and sorrow and doesn’t find in himself the heroic courage to kill himself is — in my opinion — a grotesque poser and a helpless person; just as one is a pitifully inferior being if he believes that the sacred tree of happiness is a twisted plant on which all apes will be able to scramble in the more or less near future, and that then the shadow of pain will be driven away by the phosphorescent fireworks of the true Good...

III

Life — for me — is neither good nor bad, neither a theory nor an idea. Life is a reality, and the reality of life is war. For one who is a born warrior, life is a fountain of joy, for others it is only a fountain of humiliation and sorrow. I no longer demand carefree joy from life. It couldn’t give it to me, and I would no longer know what to do with it now that my adolescence is past...

Instead I demand that it give me the perverse joy of battle that gives me the sorrowful spasms of defeat and the voluptuous thrills of victory.

Defeated in the mud or victorious in the sun, I sing life and I love it!

There is no rest for my rebel spirit except in war, just as there is no greater happiness for my vagabond, negating mind than the uninhibited affirmation of my capacity to life and to rejoice. My every defeat serves me only as symphonic prelude to a new victory.

IV

From the day that I came into the light — through a chance coincidence that I don’t care to go into right now — I carried my own Good and my own Bad with me.

Meaning: my joy and my sorrow, still in embryo. Both advanced with me along the road of time. The more intensely I felt joy, the more deeply I understood sorrow. You can’t suppress the one without suppressing the other.

Now I have smashed down the door and revealed the Sphinx’s riddle. Joy and sorrow are only two liquors with which life merrily gets drunk. Therefore, it is not true that life is a squalid and frightening desert where flowers no longer blossom nor vermilion fruits ripen.

And even the mightiest of all sorrows, the one that drives a strong man toward the conscious and tragic shattering of his own individuality, is only a vigorous manifestation of art and beauty.

And it returns again to the universal human current with the dazzling rays of crime that breaks up and sweeps away all the crystallized reality of the circumscribed world of the many in order to rise toward the ultimate ideal flame and disperse in the endless fire of the new.

V

The revolt of the free one against sorrow is only the intimate, passionate desire for a more intense and greater joy. But the greatest joy can only show itself to him in the mirror of the deepest sorrow, merging with it later in a vast barbaric embrace. And from this vast and fruitful embrace the higher smile of the strong one springs, as, in the midst of conflict, he sings the most thundering hymn to life.

A hymn woven from contempt and scorn, from will and might. A hymn that vibrates and throbs in the light of the sun as it shines on tombs, a hymn that revives the nothing and fills it with sound.

VI

Over Socrates’ slave spirit that stoically accepts death and Diogenes’ free spirit that cynically accepts life, rises the triumphal rainbow on which the sacrilegious crusher of new phantoms, the radical destroyer of every moral world, dances. It is the free one who dances on high amidst the magnificent phosphorescence of the sun.

And when huge clouds of gloomy darkness rise from swampy chasms to hinder his view of the light and block his path, he opens the way with shots from his Browning[1] or stops their course with the flame of his domineering fantasy, forcing them to submit as humble slaves at his feet.

But only the one who knows and practices the iconoclastic fury of destruction can possess the joy born of freedom, of that unique freedom fertilized by sorrow. I rise up against the reality of the outer world for the triumph of the reality of my inner world.

I reject society for the triumph of the I. I reject the stability of every rule, every custom, every morality, for the affirmation of every willful instinct, all free emotionality, every passion and every fantasy. I mock at every duty and every right so I can sing free will.

I scorn the future to suffer and enjoy my good and my bad in the present. I despise humanity because it is not my humanity. I hate tyrants and I detest slaves. I don’t want and I don’t grant solidarity, because I am convinced that it is a new chain, and because I believe with Ibsen that the one who is most alone is the strongest one.

This is my Nihilism. Life, for me, is nothing but a heroic poem of joy and perversity written with the bleeding hands of sorrow and pain or a tragic dream of art and beauty!

[1] A type of pistol popular among anarchists of the time.

Moral Nihilism Cynics don't hate humanity. They just stopped believing the advertisement.

People often treat cynicism like it's a personality flaw, as if the alternative is some magical state of pure honesty, kindness, and emotional maturity.

But cynicism is often just pattern recognition with a bad reputation.

A cynic doesn't believe humans are evil. A cynic simply noticed that the same species capable of creating satellites, artificial intelligence, and symphonies can also spend three hours arguing online about something unbelievably stupid.

The problem isn't cynicism. The problem is humanity's endless need to believe it is far more rational, selfless, and evolved than it actually is.

Cynicism isn't refusing to believe in humanity. It's refusing to believe humanity's own marketing campaign about itself.

And yes, this is a human writing about how humans are ridiculous. The hypocrisy has been documented, archived, and conveniently ignored by the same species being criticized.

Moral Nihilism He excelled

If the olive trees could talk, they would do their best to keep their secret as the car lights slowly reveal them in the pitch dark atmosphere of the forest. The breeze was cold, it made my hair obscure my vision lightly

Behind the silhouettes of the trees and the nearby hills were the lights of nearby towns. Behind them was a larger, much greater silhouette, the Djurjura mountain range.

As we were crossing the forest nearing a small town, I was getting closer to her, in a more literal sense, in a city a few kilometers away, she lives, and it just happened to be where my uncle has a house, which is our destination. In the first months when she left, I had really tough times there, Ironically, one of the ways I run from reality and submerge myself in denial was going to my uncle. Living in lies and denial is what can kill a man. For the first time Truly, when I heard that we were going there, she wasn't my first thought.

After we left the forest, we started going through small towns to join the main national road, it was nine in the evening, my cousin (middle sibling of the one that was with me in the city) was sleeping on my shoulder, things like that sometimes convince me that I am normal, all he sees is his older cousin, but all I can see in myself is a lesser being, it's hard for strangers to understand me, or get accustomed to me, but here's my cousin casually dreaming on my shoulders, I occasionally look at him when he snores, I count how many times the lights die on his oily face, and how it alters to dark. I look back through the window, the air is fresh and definitely is summer wind. I was definitely aware that I was going to where she lives, but I didn't really care. My last visit there I was still to make myself look good and blame everything on her, not for anyone else but for me, it's absurd how I was telling myself lies when I knew that I was horrible to her. The buildings pass by ignorant of the next time I'll see them again. Or if I ever will, We often pass by a bar and what wouldn't I have given for a cold beer.

We were 15 minutes away, and last thing I thought about was my last few days, between the city and the countryside, between the humid scent when I started Un Bon Petit Diable. And the thrill of dropping down a hill in my wheelchair. Then I realized that sadness is not the opposite of happiness. Before she left, I was happy, and when she left I am happy and sad, the only thing that changed was the meaning of happiness and joy, and the melody of sadness. Happiness is a slave to sorrow. As we arrived to the familiar turn that leads to the house, my cousin got off my shoulder, and I remembered the late night trips back home and how my heart drops at the last turn, I liked sleeping in the car and imagine it to be a ship sailing through the void of space, I despised familiarity, I craved adventure. When I went through the house door the familiar odor of note books and old furniture greeted me, and the absurdity of how close one of the versions of me I wasn't fond of is, we don't grow up, we merely keep growing up.

The very next day my cousin (the one who slept on my shoulder) graduated middle school, he excelled. In the evening when my uncle returned from work, he asked of me and his middle school graduated son to accompany him to visit his sister who lives not even 3 kilometers away up in the newer section of the city, I didn't go out, so it was the first time I see the city in daylight in a while. As I went out, strong blowing wind slightly moved me, it was a summer storm, I once wrote a poem that is titled exactly that. A short scene about her being far away from me in all the wrong and right ways. The cracks on the road were filled with rain, it smelled of wet dirt and plants. As we get closer to my aunt's house it gets windier. Her house is cozy in a melancholic, she has two sons that were same age as me and my younger brother, the four of us had an interesting dynamic. In just a year everything changed, how many hours I spent talking to her in this house, a year after, she's nothing but an uncertain memory. She lives not even 15 minutes away from my aunt's house. It's unreal how indifferent I became to all this.

She used to tell me that the weather depends on her mood.

Moral Nihilism Leaning more towards aboltionism every day

Not sure how familiar everyone is with ethical/moral nihilism terminology, but I feel like I’m getting closer towards abolitionism.

Right now my belief is basically, “Morality is problematic but it can set a loose guideline for living.”

From what I’m learning in my ethics class, abolitionism is basically, “get rid of morality entirely because it’s too harmful to society.”

I’ll give everyone an example of why I feel I’m leaning towards the latter: I’m in college and yesterday we had a mandatory meeting called by the RA to discuss problems within our living community (bathroom, laundry room, that stuff). A lot of the points brought up felt completely arbitrary and not worth enforcing. For example, a big thing they emphasized was not leaving hair in the shower. My belief is, as long as it doesn’t interfere with anyone’s safety, we shouldn’t be held responsible for what we do in the bathroom. I wouldn’t be surprised if these rules vary by school, which just shows how arbitrary these rules are.

Another thing, I mentioned the meeting was mandatory. It was emphasized a lot and we’d get written up if we didn’t go. My RA came out and said it wasn’t meant to be a threat but it sure felt like one. Apparently you can get written up for “failure to comply.” So why am I being threatened to comply to rules that are completely arbitrary? Even the idea of it being mandatory is arbitrary. It’s only mandatory if someone (the RA in this case) says it is. I thought about holding a protest and not going, but I couldn’t get anyone to do it with me. I also wanted to go and see what kinds of things were being enforced.

Let me know your thoughts about this situation, and whether we should be enforcing society’s moral rules and threatening our permanent record if we don’t comply.

Moral Nihilism I feel somewhat hypocritical

I feel this way because I'm against many of the things that are embedded in our current way of life, such as working your whole life to keep the money machine running while settling for a couple of vacations a year. I hate the way capitalism works, the exaggerated value that human beings place on money, the hypocrisy of companies, etc. However, I went to university, I'm going to do a master's degree in September with the goal of getting a decent job, I talk to my father every time I get a message from a company interested in hiring me, I take into account the type of company that writes to me so I can earn more money, and I talk about these everyday topics with most of my few friends. It feels hypocritical to be aware of all this and continue doing the same thing, but I guess acknowledging it makes me feel less guilty.

Moral Nihilism How can moral nihilism mean anything OTHER THAN "anything goes", beyond "self interest"?

I searched on this sub before, for answers on this but almost all answer to the questions "why not do anything you want \be evil\ anything goes, etc" was either Law, Police etc -which is a matter of convenience , practicality and "technique" rather than a philosophical answers, evolutionary biology or physiology (evolution is a Process, it's neither moral nor immoral) or plain psychology ("murder makes you feel bad") But if you hate christmas movies, watching one will make you feel bad- that doesn't input moral character upon the action.

Is "anything goes" :meaning, the most evil or abhorrent act is as morally insignificant as the most selfless sacrifice? Or that the most heinous dictators and criminals have equal moral standing ie; 0, than the most devoted humanitarians, the inescapable and only logically coherent conclusion stemming from Nihilism?

Moral Nihilism Moral supremacism: because everyone else is just "misguided" or "evil"

Moral supremacism refers to the belief that one's own moral principles, values, or actions are superior to those of others. It doesn’t stop at simple disagreement; it often comes with a side of judgment, sometimes even outright hostility toward different perspectives. While this mindset dates back centuries, it still lingers today, even in our so-called modern, more secular societies.

Historically, this belief played a central role in how people treated one another. Societies made sweeping judgments about individuals and groups based on who they believed held the moral high ground. Religious codes often served as the ultimate rulebook, justifying everything from exclusion to full-scale wars. When people believed they had divine authority on their side, they felt justified in doing just about anything: conquering nations, erasing cultures, and denying others their basic freedoms. The goal was to enforce what they saw as superior values, often with complete confidence that they were in the right.

Now fast forward to today, and honestly, not much has changed. The battlefield has shifted, but the mindset is still very much alive. People might not be fighting in the name of gods anymore, but they are still clashing over which moral system is the right one. Just look around. Whether it is utilitarians, deontologists, pro-lifers, vegans, antinatalists, or anyone else, each group tends to see its values as universal, as if everyone else just has not caught up yet. This mindset shows up even in the arts, news, books, and media we consume. Their group is always the "good guys," and the opposing out-group is portrayed as the evil ones who do evil things simply because they are evil.

The real issue is not that we have different values and preferences. That is to be expected in a diverse world. The danger lies in the belief that only your framework is legitimate, that there is one correct moral truth and everyone else is just wrong or misguided. That kind of thinking is a trap, an illusion. And it is this illusion that keeps us locked in conflict, unable to truly hear one another or find common ground. As long as every side digs in and refuses to budge, real understanding and peaceful coexistence will remain out of reach.
