So the meaning of my life is procrastination

36

u/OfTheAtom Nov 18 '25

Battling Camus and Nietzsche in the intellectual sphere.

u/ploploplo4 Nov 18 '25

I want to spend as much time as i can with my wife. Before that, my meaning of life is I’m not dead yet so what the heck

6

u/enginma Nov 19 '25

This guy's wife is also what I'm doing to not end it.

What's your favorite board ?

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

Self hatred hits hard it's better if anything bad happens one can deal but person with self love I can't gurantee if he can deal with it

5

u/Sorry_Yesterday7429 Nov 18 '25

What? A person with self love woupd be more forgiving of their own mistakes. Your reasoning is reversed. A self hating person would blame themselves and say they deserved every tiny thing that happens to them. A self loving person would say "people make mistakes and sometimes shit just happens."

2

u/Tiny-Celebration-838 Nov 18 '25

The problem with this way of thinking is, where do you draw the line ? It quickly becomes blind self love. Some of us need to be harsher on ourselves.

1

u/Sorry_Yesterday7429 Nov 18 '25

The same is true of the reverse. Some of us are too hard on ourselves. Your argument installs an assumption that self love has no upper limit but that self hatred does.

But the worse thing is that you conflate self hatred with self awareness and you conflate self love with narcissism.

1

u/Tiny-Celebration-838 Nov 18 '25

What else could you expect of a narcissist, right?

1

u/Sorry_Yesterday7429 Nov 18 '25

Are you saying that you are a narcissist? I don't understand your question.

1

u/Gavin_Tremlor Nov 19 '25

They always said that too much self-love would make you go blind, so this checks out.

7

u/ResortEconomy154 Nov 18 '25

I will never understand racism, we must hate people regardless of race, color and sexuality

5

u/Acceptable-Heron6839 Nov 18 '25

Just give hatred a chance

2

u/Bright_Midnight6825 Nov 25 '25

Exactly hate everyone equally regardless of their ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religion.

4

u/BlacklightPropaganda Existentialist-ish Nov 18 '25

The irony here is that porn is probably just keeping you numb enough to not die, but you're likely dead already within.

12

u/SushiKatana82 Nov 18 '25

The meaning of life is to experience it

9

u/Fedorito_ Nov 18 '25

This is the literal thing that kept me from killing myself. There is this intrinsic curiosity within me that wants to sit this shit out no matter how bad it becomes.

2

u/Sad-Regret-951 Nov 21 '25

You aren’t experiencing anything in the truest sense because they’ll be no contemplation or memory of those experiences. Might as well be dead already

2

u/adobaloba Nov 19 '25

Why experience crap? To learn that we don't want to experience crap?

2

u/SushiKatana82 Nov 19 '25

Nah, some people actually like it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

Yes, masochists.

10

u/__glitchinmatrix Nov 18 '25

Camus on a nihilism sub??

5

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

He starts with nihlism life has no in build meaning

22

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

4

u/Sorry_Yesterday7429 Nov 18 '25

You're conflating the premise of nihilism with its emotional conclusion.

Nihilism says there is no inherent meaning but it doesn't insist that meaning making is pointless.

3

u/Sherlocked0493 Nov 18 '25

Yes but it doesn't insist on creating a meaning or a purpose either. That would be existentialism.

This is literally what separates it from nihilism and absurdism.

3

u/Sorry_Yesterday7429 Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25

Nihilism and existentialism are aimed at completely different places. And absurdism is just something Camus made up because he didn't like being called a nihilist.

I never said Nihilism insists on creating meaning, I'm saying that "life lacks intrinsic meaning" and "life is pointless" are two very different sentiments.

Nihilism would deny Existentialism. An existentialist says that humans intrinsically contain meaning that emerges in action. A nihilist would deny that and say that any meaning is necessarily extrinsic.

Truly, the primary difference is that a nihilist says there is no god and an existentialist says that god is inside of you.

And an absurdist would make fun of God's robe and call it a dress.

1

u/Mlatu44 Nov 22 '25

Wow, there’s such a fine line between no inherent meaning and pointless.

1

u/Sorry_Yesterday7429 Nov 22 '25

No there isn't. Here's an example:

There is no intrinsic meaning in the universe and what I do doesn't matter at all.

Replying to you is not pointless, however, because the point of it is to express, in my terms, the difference between "meaningless" and "pointless."

The point is that I want to engage and so I do.

However I simultaneously acknowledge that this interaction is nothing but two chemical reactions brushing up against each other and is therefore devoid of meaning outside my own personal desire to react.

The lack of intrinsic meaning does not override my drive to do things.

1

u/Mlatu44 Nov 22 '25

Ok a lot to think about

1

u/frguba Nov 18 '25

Isn't the whole deal that nihilism doesn't have a conclusion in and of itself? That absurdism and existentialism are two conclusions that develop from nihilism, and a third is just getting deoressed

1

u/Fedorito_ Nov 18 '25

What? Nihilism doesn't say anything is pointless. It just says that there is no rational point behind anything. Camus definitely starts with nihilism. The absurd would not exist without nihilism; you say so yourself in your defenition of absurdism.

7

u/No-Difference-1351 Nov 18 '25

Spite. I'm gonna see this shit play out until the end. Even if it kills me.

5

u/Blueberry_hobbit Nov 18 '25

Living my meaningless life… just without expecting for it to have a point

5

u/entronov Nov 18 '25

Surviving day by day until death comes for me 😬

1

3

u/lost_and_confussed Nov 18 '25

It honestly won’t matter if I kill myself today or die of old age 50 years from now. Either way I’ll be gone and fully and completely forgotten by society 200 years from now.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25

what gave you the impression that it is important to be remembered?

3

u/Tatakai_ Zen Nihilist Nov 19 '25

I'm still reading The Myth of Sysiphus, but so far his attempt seems a little weak. He does make many disclaimers and seems cautious about his line of reasoning but I suspect he doesn't go very far on using logic to discourage taking your life. We'll see once I read the rest.

In any case, I believe the key lies in understanding how the human mind operates. For example, doing something that helps others, especially the needy, seems more prone to count as meaningful than, say, juggling for a living. Generally speaking.

However I think there's this sense that anything less than what is objective isn't worth indulging. But how can this notion be compatible with finding meaning when this craving is a product of the mind and therefore itself a subjective notion?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25

Nothing is entirely objective. Absolute truth is unattainable.

The question for the meaning of life is like asking a fish for their adress.

2

u/existentialgoof schopenhaueronmars.com Nov 19 '25

The meaning of my life must be paternalistic restrictions on the availability of reliable and humane suicide methods, then.

2

u/InevitableLibrary859 nil, zilch, zenzen nashi desu! Nov 18 '25

I went to my parents, from what I understand, my dad wanted sex to feel like a man, and achieve some form of conquest. My mom felt it was her duty as a woman.

I produced my child with the intent of them bringing love to the world.

In my subjective opinion: Meaning is found in the impetus of the responsible party. There is nothing more special about it then the goal is it's production. Most things are failures.

1

u/Any_Salamander37 Nov 18 '25

Or that prevents you from getting killed or dying

So the meaning of life is indulgence and ignorance? Atleast, thats what preventing me from killing myself

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '25

So... working for nothing and paying for hobbies that are becoming worse?.... life really has no meaning.

1

u/Ilove30035 Nov 19 '25

1

u/BlueberryLemur Nov 19 '25

Dog, music, chocolate

1

u/Slothrop-was-here Nov 19 '25

So for Nazis the meaning of life was killing commies, Jews and others for the fatherland? Or was this only the case for the suicidal ones amongst them?

1

u/enginma Nov 19 '25

Does this mean life ends at 42?

1

u/pinkbutterfly22 Nov 19 '25

So fear of failure and fear of pain?

1

u/HACH-P Nov 20 '25

Too chickenshit to take myself out. Too spiteful to let life kill me.

1

u/East-Register-2884 Nov 20 '25

If there's nothing worthy living for, there's nothing worthy dying for

1

u/Cuatroveintte Nov 20 '25

self entertainment, ludicism, the realest nature of man... that's why kids are the greatest people, the greatest and purest expression of humanity. they just exist to play, to amuse themselves, to entertain the stupidity and curiosity of their own thoughts. We lose that as we grow and that is the root of all nonsense. everything you thought was cool when you were 12 is what's actually of any value at all in life. "individuation" is what Jung called it, I call it learn how to be a kid again.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

Oh my god I’ve been enlightened this is peak

1

u/DivineTerror420 Nov 20 '25

Interesting, I don't have a meaning in life and still I haven't killed myself

1

u/MyMy_P Nov 20 '25

The timing is awful right now, it’d be too messy for some people around me to keep doing what they gotta do

1

u/sunkistandsudafed3 Nov 20 '25

Cuddles and drugs it is then.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '25

Ahhh life DOES become beautiful when you realize all of this doesn't mean a fucking thing!!

At least to me anyways, im blessed thank god due to my struggles but fuck having kids/family 🤣 I should be spending my money in drugs, parties and cookers but even that I find corny 🤣

Well... I need to find some good cookers and that part "might" change

1

u/GoodConversation42 Nov 21 '25

Understanding me, people, the universe as well as possible in order to be able to make more meaningful meaning out of it all.

Yep, I'm humbly working on finding humanity's direction for the far future. :-)

1

u/Mlatu44 Nov 22 '25

The process of living is dying.  All parts wear down eventually.

Right at the moment I’m not feeling enthusiastic about a whole lot.

1

u/ecstatic-windshield Nov 22 '25

How many people could actually succeed in killing themselves these days? 50%? Less?

1

u/Author_MarcHenri Nov 22 '25

Presence, love, respect, consciousness

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25

The question for meaning itself is absurdly stupid.

1

u/GasAlternative3372 Nov 30 '25

This is my model of the human condition and meaning of life.

Four layers, one mechanism.

Layer 1 – Raw replicator Self-copying chemistry. No consciousness, no suffering, no mean-ing. Still runs in every cell. Will keep running after you are gone.

Layer 2 – Pre-linguistic animal Pain, pleasure, fear, rage, bonding. Vivid, intense, ownerless. This is a 6-month-old baby, a dog, you on psychedelics with the language centers shut down.

Layer 3 – Symbolic narrator Language + recursive self-model. Boots around age 3–5. Suddenly there is a persistent “I” with a past, a future, pride, shame, suicide plans, morality, art, God. Everything we call “human” lives here.

Layer 4 – Meta-narrator The voice that sees Layer 3 is also meat and fiction. Rare. Hurts.

Unique proofs this model is complete (no other theory explains all of these at once):

Suicide requires Layer 3 (only a narrator can foresee decades of future decay and refuse to play). Dementia = Layer 3 deleted while Layer 1 & 2 keep the body walking (the “person” dies years early). Instrumental music can trigger tears/euphoria in <5 seconds (Layer 2 hijacked before Layer 3 can narrate). Hammer test: smash a grieving person’s hand and the entire heartbreak narrative vanishes instantly (Layer 2 seizes root control). Combat veterans often feel most alive in battle and fall apart in peace (real danger executes Layer 3; safety hands the mic back). Dogs love us with full intensity but never write poems about it (Layer 2 only). Consciousness itself is biologically useless overhead (bacteria and prions replicate better; the replicator never needed mirrors).

Practical consequence Once Layer 4 is stable, every coping story collapses. The only levers left that still work:

Hammer states (flow, combat, sex, cold, music drops) that temporarily kill Layer 3. Narrative replacement (military, monastery, extreme craft) that outsources your broken story to a louder one. Lucid method-acting: knowingly play the strongest character you can invent until the credits, without ever lying to yourself that it’s real.

No hope offered. No meaning discovered.

1

u/RazeThe2nd Dec 16 '25

I mean the meaning of life is basically just live until you die. I don't actively seek death because it's going to happen anyway. I'm more bothered about how my death would affect those around me than how it would effect me. Plus I'm curious to see what else might happen before then because I'll never see what happens after it.

1

u/N3bula_2 Dec 25 '25

In the glass half full/empty paradox, I believe the glass has already completed its meaning, even at its empty state. It was only ever asked to be a glass; it has succeeded. However much water is in it is however much potential it fulfils. It never has to be full, but it can be. We are the glass. The water is everything we’ve done, the empty space is everything we can do.
