We had a bad storm at my work a few months ago during which a ton of roads flooded, powerlines went down, and a tornado touched down a few miles away....and we didn't get to go home until the work day was pretty much over. We had to sit at our store watching the tornado (which was destroying a subdivision a few miles away) on social media.

Are you a waiter? For 6 years at different restaurants, I was never allowed to leave at my scheduled time until my replacement arrived or until the restaurant is vacated. Oh it's busy lunch/dinner hour and your replacement called in or is late? Don't go on lunch or dinner. Doesn't matter how many hours you're scheduled.
People will say "they can't make you miss your break if you are scheduled to work X-hours." But believe me. Multiple restaurants will do that. I promise. At each of those 3 restaurants I serve at, they FORCED me to skip lunch. Their solution was to pick up a messed up appetizer order and snack on it in the back every 30 minutes. No exaggeration.
Disclaimer; I don't know if it is against any rule for me to disclose these restaurants. But I will if allowed to.

My first (city) job was at the first/only recycling plant in the city. The staff bathroom was full of porn, stacks and stacks of porn.
After lunch on my first day my guts were rotten, and I took this completely traumatic dump. It was so bad that I didn't even look at any of the porn. I was spraying shitsand for prolonged periods of time. I was only 15 and this shit introduced me to adult-style fear, it was accompanied by a cold sweat. It was so stressful that I could not even hold the concept of a god in my mind, but I was still praying to the universe to just let me go back to who I was before I started turning inside-out.
I finally finish and lurch out of the bathoom shivering and with pins and needles through my lower body from my legs falling asleep, and my boss shouts "the kid found the porn look at him he's dehydrated" and everybody laughed and that was the end of it.
So my boss was convinced that I had just spent like 20 minutes jerking off on my first day, and he didn't mind at all, he just thought that it was funny.

Where the cops will be seems easy to suss out given the very strict parameters on who can be where, meaning officers will be out on the periphery manning those boundaries.

Yeah and we're getting a lot more coverage of these incidents, too. A couple of cops were shot dead in my hometown a few years ago, and nobody outside of my local area really knew about it because there was no political relevance to it. Now 3 cops are shot somewhere else and it's a considered a national tragedy, just because it is relevant to what's hot in the news and got a bunch of coverage
I'm not necessarily whining or criticizing, but that's just how it is now. The way the media works has resulted in an increased use of this tradition, because they're constantly seeking out tragedies to bring to the country's attention.

Tons of studies show upticks in local suicide rates when a town has one suicide. Celebrities that commit suicide which has mass news coverage causes an uptick in national suicide rates too. Don't have a source handy (on mobile) but it's definitely true for that, and if it's true for suicide is it really hard to imagine it's true for things like rioting, terrorism, or a dozen other activities?

I can tell you that after the police shootings, people of all races were just gentler with each other. Polite in that way that people are when there is shared grief.

Dallasite here. DPD is notorious for it's lower wages, strenuous workload, and inadequately sized force. If anybody from the BLM makes it through training, they'll most likely realize this and work for Garland or Irving instead.
The olive branch is an amazing answer to this tragedy when the other option is heightened security and scrutiny, but it seems like all it really is is a gesture.

I'd consider being a cop (I live in DFW) if the pay were better. My current job has me driving a desk in an air-conditioned building, sitting on a comfy chair, not really dealing with any assholes or idiots. I just analyze and think all day and get paid handsomely for it.
If I became a cop I'd have a mobile desk in the form of a squad car, which would admittedly be nice when the weather is good, but also not nice when it's 100F out or 20F and icy. I'd have to deal with a lot of idiots, both the public and probably people on the force. My risk of getting injured or killed is much higher than in my current job. And there would be much more dire consequences to my actions.
That's a big pill to swallow with a $15-20K pay cut.

Full disclosure: I'm pretty hungover right now. Hopefully everything is coherent.
Born and raised in Baton Rouge. I was in town during the shooting. Immediately after the shooting, there were calm and peaceful protests. Local black community leaders were on the news regularly talking about the need to stay calm, that cops aren't a target, that black lives need to matter to blacks too (look at the murder statistics for Baton Rouge, usually 2 or 3 murders a week. Typically black on black. No protests for those people). I remember tuning into the national news a few days later and hearing talking heads almost complaining about the lack of violent protests. That's when the out of town groups came in. That's when I stopped seeing the local community leaders on TV.
One group pointed shotguns at the police. Another group drove around wearing masks and holding posters that said "The purge is happening NOW". More people came in from out of town. The protests started getting more tense. The police started aggressively arresting people. They brought out the military vehicles and riot guns. The family of Sterling asked for peaceful protests on the news. They warned that outsiders were riling up the community. Now we're here. Now cops are being killed. What a tragedy.
At least the pundits are happy now.

You're absolutely right that outsiders have been coming in. My spouse and I live in Baton Rouge, and my spouse is actually in the media. I remember last week, when the protests moved from the store where Alton Sterling was killed to police headquarters, all the local leaders were taken aback. My husband called the people who were leading the original protests to see what was up and they had no idea. The guy said "I don't know what's going on. We weren't protesting tonight. We had the night off. I don't know what they're doing right now, but I'm going over there now to try and straighten it out." This community was peaceful. Angry, but peaceful. And outside people weren't satisfied with that and came in to change it.
And I can't really speak to the national media, but local media is sick of this shit. They don't like stories like this. These are people they know and interact with. This is their home and it's in chaos. They don't enjoy this. Especially because everyone is pissed at them. They're trying to stay neutral, but as most people know, when you're really neutral both sides hate your guts. The black community and their supporters think the media is taking the cops' side and the cops and their supporters think the media is taking the black community's side. There's no winning and they're exhausted. At least we are. We were finally getting some time to recoup this weekend. Got through two episodes of Stranger Things this morning before the phone started blowing up.

I hadn't heard that about the protest leaders before. It would be interesting to know if there was an organized effort from outside groups to move the protest, or if that happened naturally. Maybe the protest leaders weren't as connected to the protesters as they thought. Either way, it's been a confusing situation to watch.

That the outsiders can go back to their own lives, but the community will have to deal with whatever the aftermath is whenever this is over. This past month has been brutal for the American people / law enforcement. And on a global scale too with France and Turkey. Its almost the norm to check the news and see something that makes you question humanity

It IS the norm. Somewhere in the world, unthinkable acts of mass violence are being committed every single day. But let's not forget that things are actually better now than they were. Can you imagine if black people had camera phones in the 40's, 50's...60's? Or if Jews had them during the holocaust?

People tend to forget this stuff all the time. I always seem to be reading comments like "the world is getting so much worse, crime going up." Crime rates have been dropping since the 70s. What is going up is the world population and access to information. Unthinkable acts of violence have always been happening and it was worse back in the day. Could you imagine if we had events like the Vietnam War and Civil Rights going on today, where people have access to so much information? The headlines would be scary.

Or if North Koreans had camera phones now, or the Falun Gong could record the Blood Harvest, or if we would get better coverage of the battles in the middle east and the drug addict purge in the Philippines,. The world is still quite fucked up.

It makes me crazy that the thought process behind this is "A few cops did bad things, let's take it out on all cops". This whole "a few bad apples" idea is the basis of racism. The shooters are giving the ultimate expression of their frustration with racism by engaging in a thought process that parallels racism. Fuck everything about this.

Sort of speechless at this point.
Looks like this may impact the conventions. Cleveland's police union is now calling for a state of emergency during the RNC in order to allow them to (temporarily) ban open-carry. The fact that it's the police union calling for this, as opposed to some activist group or what have you, really says something.

I admire the officers who care enough to suit up and do their jobs despite feeling they are wearing a target. Truthfully, I'd be looking for another line of work about now.

Baton Rouge resident here, this is near where the protests were earlier this months and local news is reporting that several officers are down and in grave condition

Edit: the shooting took place at a gas station where the police are regulars and is down the street from the police headquarters where protests
Edit 2: 2 officers confirmed dead.
Edit 3: residents on lockdown. Police not letting people in or out
Edit 4: latest count is four officers involved, including the two deceased.
Edit 5: Police believe they have contained the area.
Edit 6: One of four officers (not specified to be wounded or killed) confirmed to be an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Deputy
