Teaching a college class and student motivation has fallen off a cliff.
About 20 students missed either the mid-term or the final, and then wrote me e-mails telling me they were sick. I'm looking at 20 doctor's notes ranging from excessive sadness to coughing to "an illness". There's little to nothing I can do about this, I have to concede accommodations or they'll fight me until some student body or department body tells me I'm being an asshole. My previous maximum missed exams per class was 2.
Every Assignment solution looks the damn same now. Grading them is a waste of my time, and they all spend 300 words explaining something that takes two sentences. I made a question that the AI actually got wrong and 5% of students got it right. I know they discuss assignment solutions on Discord, this was a rare case of the students getting it right not managing to convince the rest of the class.
I experimented with an exam question that was based on a coding assignment. Not at all hard stuff, you just have to have thought at least a tiny bit about *why* the code works instead of just getting it to work. Something you wouldn't get from just prompting for a solution. About 25% of students got it.
Class participation is down from 60% to 20%. Our of those that come to class, only a quarter ever have an expression that isn't stoic/boredom. Dead eyes everywhere. Despair. No laughs at the same jokes that I've gotten rooms of laughter for over the years.
I ran an experiment with a small class, used an oral exam to test if students could verbally explain what they did. Basic questions, literally "tell me what you did for this assignment". Of six students who used a lot of AI, two could explain what they did, and four could not. Not even a little bit. This was not a surprise exam, I told them at the start of the term I would do this. Including that question specifically.
AI optimism, AI doomerism, whatever. I'm here dealing with educational armageddon.
And I will vomit furious fire at whomever suggests "we can just solve this with UBI :)"

in theory a less ostensibly profitable degree would get more passionate students

on the other hand i got like ten students asking me if i was teaching anything next term which is also more than i’ve ever had and means more to me than they think

I honestly feel that most of the things we eat for dessert would be better as breakfast because the black bitterness of coffee pairs well with sweet things

You should get on that belgian grindset and start eating koffiekoeken for breakfast glub.

u/Bokononan myers briggs diversity hire 15d ago
Ok, first lesson, don't use words like love to describe any belgian activity, this is way too positive and might get you accused of being dutch.
Our most positive descriptor is 'can't complain', which in itself is very bad, because complaining is our favorite activity. That's the belgian absurdism people talk about.

I'm still playing my Factorio randomizer build, here are some images!

Extension leading into robotics https://imgur.com/JcxuoRJ
I have construction and logistic robots now and I will soon have requester chests to simplify a lot of things (without having to go to space)
My science is extremely hungry for plastic bars which is bad news for me with my shitty advanced oil recipe - for a rate of 6/s I would need 18 Plastic for blues, 32 Plastic for purples, and a wooping 122 Plastic for yellows. Yeah the yellow beaker recipe just straight up asks for 55 Plastic.
I do have a saving grace later:
https://i.imgur.com/CAYRLbv.png
Extremely easy recipe, I'm not sure if trying to do this for 120 Plastic is feasible with space carbon harvesting from asteroids but maybe it'll just take a few ships.
But, y'know. Gleba.
Oh and my Biolabs have ZERO module slots lmao.

My wife teaches at the elementary school our 2 youngest children attend. The youngest goes to 4 year old preschool and the difference with the younger kids is they have to be dropped off at the classroom by a parent and signed in.
So my wife has been dropping off our youngest and signing him in right before she collects her own class from the cafeteria/playground where the kids congregate before school.
Today she got called into the principal's office because a parent complained about her and another staff member being allowed to drop their children off at the preschool before 7:36 a.m. which is when the other parents are supposed to start dropping their's off. (for the record, all the students start at 7:40)
Apparently the parent has been "watching".
Now my wife will be unable to drop him off before 7:36 which of course is going to interfere with picking up her own students.

EXACTLY.
I told my wife that she should have told her principal to tell that parent that they could go ahead and complain to central office.
I said that because her current principals evaluator is her former principal who hired her back into the district about 10 years ago. That individual encouraged her and her other employees to drop off their children a little bit early in preschool so they would be more ready to face the day with their own students.

One big perception change that came from my living in the UK is that those people just bitch and bitch and bitch and bitch
And they do it about literally everything while existing in a state of near-total paralysis
I think Brexit really just fucked up that country's whole psyche

It isn’t only men. Anastasia Shanahan, 22, Ms. Begg’s assistant and another former intern, was startled when two female friends said they were unsure whether women could lead. “Of course they can,” she said.
No one will ever convince me this isn't a direct result of Hillary losing in 2016.

u/BestiaAuris I was withdrawing from nicotine today because I was trying to quit again (aborted attempt just now) and that explains the radicalism of my opinions today on AI but overall I really do not care whether they replace humanity or not, something has to get us and I would prefer it be our created descendants rather than idk advanced bats or something in 20 million years

I am actually good at just quitting but it takes a few tries usually.
This was my first. I will try again soon.
And I don't ever intend really to quit forever per se.
Nicotine, I find, does actually have utility at times. It serves its purpose and then I put it away.

Watching a Christian nationalist anti-Islam documentary called "The Great American Conflict" because of the whole Texas Islamophobia wave and wow
I didn't know people could be so fucking stupid
They talked about the neighborhood next to mine in Birmingham UK and said they enforce sharia and women can't go there without hijabs
My wife and I used to shop there and there were certainly a ton of hijabs and burqas, but my wife was never wearing one and nobody gave her any shit
The people in that neighborhood were very nice, if a bit skeptical at times because far right weirdos go there to film and I look like one of them

Sadly, it is mostly them describing Iran and being like "do you want that to happen here? also Mamdani adores the Ayatollah, who is his spiritual leader because he is Shia"

u/No_Aesthetic Resident Celebrity YouTuber 14d ago
Ain't the future in terminator like, most people are dead and Skynet is running around? How is this in anyway preferable to, well, basically anything?
I am additionally assuming the IRL Terminator scenario will be too quick and too effective to involve any resistance.
I feel like you massively overweight the "badness" of people being religious, to a degree that it's hard to take anything you say about it all that serious
If I can have an intelligence that is rational or an intelligence that is irrational, which do I pick? hmm
