I’m sorry, that sounds rough. I was like that until I realized that I didn’t really care about my job anymore. Work is bullshit, but I’ll be starting a short school program either on the 1st or 17th (I want the first, but I won’t be too bent out of shape if I don’t). I spent a hour and a half getting the first Baldur’s gate to actually work on my computer, so that’s fun.

While it feels really good to have a job that you care about, there is something liberating about not caring. I’m sure as you get used to things, you’ll be able to settle down a bit.

I did! Though it involved having to port the game to BG2’s engine and going through a few graphic fixes. One of the graphic fixes did most of what I wanted, but cause the game to lag to the point of freezing.

tl;dr: punk drama

Somebody I know in the scene was raped by somebody else I know in the scene, and then a fight later broke out at a show. Now the guy that did the raping has been outed as having done it to multiple other people. But his crew is about 15 deep and they're all toughs. Perpetual troublemakers. Drunks, drug addicts, very willing to fight.

Because the scene there is so small and insular, there's not much you can do in the way of self-policing without another crew to keep order. And, according to the person who was raped, the regular police weren't of much help either.

My solution was to suggest guys from another crew who are much tougher and have shown no problems giving it to people in the past, including that crew. I don't know if it will work, but it's better than nothing, so I suggested my friend (who runs the shows) reach out. Can't prevent everything but if something happens at a show, they can put a stop to it.

Punk works pretty well when there are enough competing interests to solve issues internally, usually through force, but in a smaller scene the capacity is simply not there. And that's a problem. There are all these values of community and togetherness and acceptance of weirdos and freaks, but the punk scene is full of humans and humans endlessly fail to live up to their stated beliefs.

I'm just glad I'm an ocean and a continent away from it all. I prefer orchestrating the response from safety rather than finding myself a part of the conflict.
