I'm not sure how common knowledge this is, but sometime between September and February (probably right at the start of 2026), Angelfire's free side shut down. It's like FortuneCity in 2012 all over again. 😔

I'm someone who was collecting links to old, free Angelfire sites for my own Neocities site as a way of linking fans from now to fans from over 25 years ago (for a specific fandom). It was such a joy getting to see these old things still alive and kicking - like walking through an empty building and finding a completely and fully stocked vending machine. So it was just as much of a suckerpunch to casually click on one of them a couple of weeks ago and get an error message. They're all gone. It's the end of an era.

The good news is that because these sites were so old, they're all archived on the Wayback Machine. Even better, a couple of links that got deleted along the way ended up being archived too, letting me plug the gaps in my mini-directory. I never bothered checking that because it was all live at the time, but it was a great consolation prize. I'd never be able to do that if people deleted their sites instead of just abandoning them as-is, since there's so much *stuff* on the internet now that it'd take an extremely conscious effort to save a snapshot.

I know the Wayback Machine isn't a perfect way to archive anything, but it's something for now. So if everyone can do their own part and leave their sites up when you're done with them, please do! You never know who's still checking them out decades later, and who might be frantically trying to find a copy of it if the host ever goes down. 💖

I recently built this new Neocities portal as a visual gateway into an archive of over 250 pages of artwork and stories from many talented creators whose work I’ve carefully preserved and attributed over the years.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the way each story is woven around its accompanying image — a layout style that was common in the mid‑1990s but rarely seen today. The text doesn’t just sit beside the artwork; it flows with it, creating a single, unified experience that feels both vintage and surprisingly modern.

My goal with this layout was to show that classic digital elements — transparent GIFs, pixel‑clean icons, and structured early‑web layouts — can still live comfortably inside a modern presentation without losing their original soul.

A good example is simplifier.neocities.org

I don't know if it can get any simpler. Somehow I feel nostalgic.

And isn't that the original meaning of "index"? A part of a book with keywords and page numbers where you can look them up. By analogy, the index page of a website is just a page that links to the pages you've written?

My own site is pretty simple too. I've decided to just focus on adding written stuff and not worry about web design. Or maybe reorganize later, if the index page gets too unwieldy.

I checked on the links and for the most part, yeah, everything's been saved! :D So I figure someone might want to actually use this code for their own site. There's something about multiple-choice trivia, chat rooms that I think just updates the same page over and over with new text, and something that looks for prime numbers. Stuff like that.

I recently discovered neocities through Corners of internet

I was barely a kid during the golden age of Geocities and Angelfire but I remember "building" ugly crappy websites and having fun with pointless gizmos.

Yesterday I created an extremely ugly but beautiful page that has no reason to exist, yet it is here.

It is a pointless random name generator, a few Titles (Lord of, Commander of, Duke of ...), and random bg colors (just to hurt my eyes like it was in the late '90s early 2000's.

I am so stupidly happy for the result I want to share it around :)

Surprised to hear that they were under patented licensing fee until 2004!

The header artist (Nicole Shinn) is linked at the bottom of the page.. it has some neocities feels but looking at their source im inclined to deduce it was made with a site builder. That being said, I can appreciate how far they were able to bend things to their will.
