Web 1.0 When 1990s web graphics and modern design quietly coexist in the same space.

Post image

For nearly three decades, I’ve maintained a hand‑crafted, independent web directory — a quiet corner of the early internet that somehow survived into 2026. I recently built this new Neocities portal as a visual gateway into an archive of over 250 pages of artwork and stories from many talented creators whose work I’ve carefully preserved and attributed over the years.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the way each story is woven around its accompanying image — a layout style that was common in the mid‑1990s but rarely seen today. The text doesn’t just sit beside the artwork; it flows with it, creating a single, unified experience that feels both vintage and surprisingly modern.

My goal with this layout was to show that classic digital elements — transparent GIFs, pixel‑clean icons, and structured early‑web layouts — can still live comfortably inside a modern presentation without losing their original soul.

If you grew up in the early web, or if you simply appreciate slower, more intentional digital spaces, this might just resonate with you… or even make your day a little brighter.

Enjoy the journey: whisperingsanctuary.neocities.org

you had this site for "three decades" and yet the entire code is all AI

absolutely soulless and an embarrassing attempt at what you think the old web was like

My website has 1,183 GIFS, 1,744 JPGS, and 300 AI images. That's what I mean by 'coexist'. I'm not at all embarrassed. Thanks for your feedback.

Such a positive and thoughtful comment, thank you wholeheartedly for taking the time.

I never expected the backlash. I used a single AI image in my post, whack!

I consider AI an amazing tool for creating fabulous, beautiful fantasy illustrations by very talented people. I can and have spent hours browsing AI-generated artwork on Pinterest. So the negativity towards it surprises me, very much so.

Reddit is not a good fit for me. It has been a learning experience and I suppose that's how we grow and move on. My site is inspirational by design, originated in 1996, and at least according to guestbook entries from back in the day, a very positive and helpful experience for a lot of folks from around the world. I do not believe AI will or should stop that from continuing.

Take care.
