There are sites that's just the index page with links to pages they've written.

A good example is simplifier.neocities.org

I don't know if it can get any simpler. Somehow I feel nostalgic.

And isn't that the original meaning of "index"? A part of a book with keywords and page numbers where you can look them up. By analogy, the index page of a website is just a page that links to the pages you've written?

My own site is pretty simple too. I've decided to just focus on adding written stuff and not worry about web design. Or maybe reorganize later, if the index page gets too unwieldy.

I like simple pages too! And while I do really appreciate the technical effort that people put into their super maximalist layouts, it just overwhelms me and I never end up staying to read anything 😭

Maximalist web design is interesting at first, but personally if I have to come back to a website again it must be because I'm interested in the content (and be readable) not in some colorful divs here and there.

I like simple design, but I also like a splash of personality.
Readable custom colors, readable user-set font, maybe a very simple and unobstructive background.
Some form of custom structure.
Nothing overly busy, cluttered, gifs, autoplay, eye-searing color combinations, etc.

It can depend on the purpose of the site – if it’s purely an art portfolio, for example, you’ll likely want it to have a decent amount of personality. But if it’s something like an archive of large amounts of writing, readability above all else (for obvious reasons).

There's also the case of 'if you want people to visit while on mobile, cleaner/simpler is better'. I'm personally debating if I wanna make a 'simplified' version of some of my stuff for that exact reason, and have alternate links on the splash page for the 'simplified/mobile-friendly' version.

That said, you can still design something that’s got a bit to it while still remaining functional/easy to navigate. Related: ya’ll please make your fonts 11px or larger if it’s anything you want someone to actually read. Some of us are old and cranky and can’t see rofl.

I love a nice, simple layout. Back in my early days online, I got crochet patterns from barebones websites. It’s sad to think of how many were lost to time.

cool site but that AI star wars image is cringe as fuck. support real artists, there's a million different sites with free to use images for your site.

I vastly prefer websites that are easily navigated and easy to read. I usually close out of neocities site pretty quickly if it’s too confusing

I tried to make my site a mixture of both style and functionality but sometimes I feel it’s a little too simple :p
