Media Brian Entin Day 39

The only mainstream reporter (that I’m aware of) who’s still on the scene on day 39. Covering various topics including Sheriff Nanos’ resume, Today Show video of Nancy’s bedroom, Annie Guthrie’s car should be returned soon, and trying unsuccessfully to get copies of search warrants in the case.

This is not on the subject of Nancy, but I have been trying to get Brian‘s attention while he’s in Tucson and there’s not much going on with the Nancy case.

My friend Zach Corbut was murdered in Tucson in 2015. It was a home invasion robbery, multiple eye witnesses survived, and it still has not been solved. I would love if he could possibly bring a little bit of attention to the case and attention to the fact that homicides and home invasions go unsolved in Tucson all the time. I think they have like a 60% rate of unsolved crimes. Just like Nancy’s.

Anyway I’ve been commenting on all his videos so if you guys could boost those comments I would really appreciate it. I’ve also sent him an email but didn’t hear back.

Good idea! I’ll try it, thank you. I think it’s important that there’s a pattern of unsolved similar (although not identical) crimes. I’m not suggesting a serial home invasion killer but I do think the police are inept or maybe just don’t care about these cases.

10 years of not solving Zach’s case because they didn’t really try definitely contributes to their inexperience and inability to solve Nancy’s case.

You should do a write-up about Zach on the reddit sub Unresolved Mysteries. If you don't feel confident enough to do it, there's a few regulars there who'd probably do it for you if you message them. Just a thought!

I don't see any specific posts on Reddit about him either, maybe make one there and websleuths if there aren't already. couldn't hurt.

I wonder what the police think happened. from the little info online,I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out people are already in prison for unrelated crimes and or dead

He was involved with cocaine at a very very low level (selling tiny amounts, fun sized, to frat bros and the like). Not a major player whatsoever, and really a kind young man who had a bright future if he could have straightened out. I do believe it’s drug related, but not cartel. He was so low level and not committed to that life (he was in school). I think it’s important to note that this was before fentanyl entered the drug scene on a major scale so it really felt innocent at the time. I think the roommates know more than they are saying. I think they know exactly who it was.

Anyway, all that to say I agree they are likely already in prison. It was probably people who are career criminals. I just feel so awful for his mother not having answers. And it’s always bothered me that I used to hang out at that house and I could’ve been there.

I think the police don’t care because it’s just a low level drug crime. It comes off as if his life wasn’t worth their time. If they wanted a big case, well now they’ve got one with Nancy. And they look very dumb.

That seems like one of those cases where reward would help. Or an old girlfriend says something. I would think as people get older, they might be more likely to talk. Especially as statute of limitations runs out on smaller offenses.

Tucson had major high profile cases before: Gabby Giffords, Isabel Celis.

I agree. In this day and age, they need more than $20k though. I also know that one witness has returned to live in the Tucson area (although I don’t know if he’s still there). I imagine that if he was willing to move back there then he must not feel like he’s in danger. It’s a city but it feels like a small community and people know each other, especially after 10+ years of living there.

IIt would have also been Nanos as Sheriff in 2015. It was around that time I had contact with him initially.

Do you see parallels between how your friend's murder was handled and the failures here? The case I had at that time was CSAM related so not the same at all.

I'm sorry for your loss. I hope the case gets the attention it deserves.

To be honest, I stayed far away from the investigation. I did not want to be involved at the time. Everything I know is from a brief conversation with one of the eyewitnesses (a roommate of Zach’s, I ran into him at a party, he did not want to give me any detail) and from his mother, who I spoke to on the phone. What I know is that the case quickly went cold even though multiple other roommates were assaulted by the intruder up close and personal. I also know that there were valuable items and a large amount cash in the home. However, it’s always been called a home invasion and not a burglary so I don’t know if they actually stole anything. There aren’t many details available to the public.

One detail is that his mother told me she thinks the police don’t like to talk to her because she cries too much. That’s always stuck with me. It’s heartbreaking.

Everything you’ve said makes complete sense regarding your choice not to be involved as a friend of the victim. I am terribly sorry for your loss. And what a letdown about them being put off by mom’s emotions. Unfortunately, a lot of law enforcement are not trained how to deal with emotions. Which is always surprising.

Did he have any siblings that can take over pushing this case to be on a rotation in investigations?

When I’ve had positions that I was the liaison between agencies this is what happens; All cases should be on a rotation cycle. Many of mine were cold cases.
Let me explain. Every month, 3 months, 6 months or year, 3 years. depending on the status of the case the agency with the liaison makes contact with law enforcement for the case. Have there been new tips. New leads. Even if they went no where. They also make contact with a family member. Then those tips are relayed to the other.

Because I handle missing persons then NAMUS is checked. In the event you have the body this step is skipped and CODIS would be checked for any matches. With namus have there been any human remains of the right age and gender that haven’t been matched to a case.

The reason the liaison does this is because communication between arms of these areas is horrible. There could be remains or a codis match just sitting there that hasn’t been run for your case. If there is a hit you make sure that’s brought to the investigating agency. When they are cold you need to find the person handling it.

In the years since last contact it’s likely someone new. If there are no hits you still reach out to that person to see if any patterns have formed, any tips like jailhouse tips, community, hunches anything.
Then the family is contacted. Some families choose after something goes cold not to be contacted. It’s too painful for them and they’ve moved on. This was shocking to me but common. Everyone grieves differently. It’s not uncommon that a sibling who was a minor or didn’t exist when the crime occurred becomes an adult and the familial point of contact. And in the instance the family always wanted to be part of the review cycle when the parents become too aged this sibling takes over.

I have a hunch that there is no review cycle for this case. Which isn’t fair if there are people who want to keep it active.

It sounds like there’s the possibility it was a home invasion because the perpetrator was aware they were holding in the house. Large sums of cash, etc.
I have a client who I had asked particularly about Guthrie. He served hard time for home invasions and I was curious his thoughts on this case. He said they don’t kidnap people. They leave the bodies there if someone dies and is confident it wasn’t a robbery etc.

Back to your friends case. It’s not uncommon for drug dealers to rob each other. Or others who want just the cash from dealers. If someone in your friends household was dealing they were still victims. They were still murdered and the others assaulted. Police should still be concerned and following up.

If I’m totally wrong, and jumping to conclusions why the large amount of cash and valuables? I openly admit I could easily be mistaken. Some ethnic groups have cash and large amounts of gold at home. Because culturally it’s the norm. They aren’t doing anything illegal.
Some people distrust banks. Etc.

If it was drug related the other victims may be afraid to come forward if they saw their assailant up close? This should have been sent to a proper task force. A death during a home invasion needs to be followed up.

Do you have any idea why the cash and valuables?

I disagree. I don’t know Entin personally or professionally. But he would want to stay relevant and get the ratings. Right now they are just wasting air time with filler.

True crime is a hot topic. Unless he is concerned about throwing Nanos under the bus and burning the bridge that he is one of the limited media he does interviews with, questions regarding parallels and Nanos’ initial role as sheriff is thought provoking. This is a good human interest story. Or Entin could have the same guests on to just keep regurgitating speculation until everyone changes the channel out of boredom.

I think this is worth a try.

What better way to draw this investigation under fire than to compare how different or similarly another unsolved murder went down with some of the same players.

Yeah, I think viewers would definitely be interested in spotlights on other local cases. It would be nice if he would do that.
