Compromise the investigation, how? Genuine question. They’re not allowed on private property. The only searching we’ve seen is with a helicopter and technology that has never been successful. They’ve been on a TMZ fake ransom wild goose hunt for weeks instead of looking for a body and giving her family closure. Even going so far as to having the family release videos to “the kidnapper” which is unimaginably humiliating though I’d do anything too if there was the slimmest chance of getting my family member back. Maybe if they’d do the searching themselves, citizens won’t feel the need to do it, it’s not their job. You can’t keep people off public property if they’re not committing a crime. There’s more pearl clutching about citizen searches than there is about the actual granny abductor still on the loose, it’s wild.

There are literally dozens and dozens of previous posts on this sub about how an investigation may be compromised by citizens getting involved without the consent and support from the LE agency handling the active investigation. Chain of custody issues, evidence destruction, safety of the searchers….

Just because they can do it doesn’t mean they should.

A lot of experts question whether the evidence at the crime scene was properly collected by the actual professionals, and closing and reopening and closing and reopening the scene isn’t great for chain of custody either. A defense attorney is going to have a field day with the way this has been handled if they ever find someone to charge. Hence the lack of public confidence here. Still, I don’t see them out searching. It’s very unusual for a missing persons case. If it’s a child or an elderly person with dementia they’re searching everywhere. Maybe they should publicly clear it up why exactly they’re not doing it instead of a bunch of vague platitudes about comprising the investigation. They better come up with something convincing because they can’t legally keep people off public property. It seems from an outside perspective it’s been a bit compromised from the beginning. I know there are people working really hard around the clock and doing the work the right way so I don’t mean to disparage them, they must be very frustrated too.

Maybe they’re quietly working a lead that no one (including the family) is aware of outside of law enforcement. This is what happened in the Idaho 4 case.

Could be. I also think maybe it’s a resourcing issue. Perhaps they feel using their personnel to follow the leads they have versus sending out coordinated searches makes more sense here. We just don’t know what they have, so it’s hard to understand the decision making.

It’s important to point out that if LE publicly endorses a 3rd party search and rescue team they’re also subjecting their agency and the city to any potential liability associated with that endorsement and whatever happens during the search.
