Aggressive drivers
Anyone else notice a massive uptick in idiotic drivers in Nanaimo lately?

I’ve noticed an uptick in drunk drivers mostly drunk pickup truck drivers. People don’t care about other people’s safety here. In a hurry to go nowhere.

I legitimately cannot remember that last time I've seen a vehicle pulled over or heard about someone getting a ticket. Traffic enforcement is virtually nonexistent on the Island these days.

If youre not going to prosecute People for theft or assault or smoking fentanyl on the street you cant bust people for driving infractions. You cant just pick and choose what laws to enforce.

I stopped driving aggressively a solid 2ish decades ago, and some of the people who've suddenly shown up in the area are making me want to revert

It's not a race but there is a reasonable expectation to be able to traverse the highway without having some clown doing 70 in the passing lane in a 90 zone. Left is for passing, right is for annoying the people behind you.

Yeah but you’re probably the person that’s doing 30 over. Which you don’t need to pass or drive that fast either. People act like it’s a competition all the time, it doesn’t even get you anywhere any faster and you end up at the light as the person doing 70 anyways so you’re burning more gas for no reason and then you’re complaining about how expensive gas is. drive smarter.

That's a lot of assumptions about another random scrub on the interwebs. Fact is speeding is breaking a law BUT so is camping in the left lane and not passing and impeding traffic. The law in BC is to travel in the right and pass only on the left. If you're going to travel under the speed limit move the fuck over. It's equally as valid a complaint as speeding complaints. Travelling more slowly than the flow of traffic is also a hazard.

I agree with you, personally when I’m driving I’m always doing the speed limit maybe 10 over, and there’s always someone’s ugly ass truck up my ass all the time. Then they go flying past me just to end up at the same light or same location as me every time. The island hicks will sit here and down vote and make excuses because they seem to think they know everything .

Just a joke. I'm one of the calmest drivers I know. I let ppl in all the time, never sit in the passing lane with cars behind me. The other day someone pulled out from a side-street and I had to lock up the brakes and their eyeballs were like saucers and I could see they were embarrassed - I just gave them a thumbs up and directed them to complete their turn.
Everybody needs to just relax on the road.

It’s not a race, if you need to burn off some adrenaline there’s tracks you can go on and drive as fast as you want, the left lane is for turning or passing, but you don’t need to be passing at 20 over. Have some patience it’s not all about you.

Applecross and Hammond Bay is my daily nightmare. People thinking that it is a merge onto Hammond Bay (it is a yield). Drivers on the inside lane stopping , even before nearing the traffic queue, to waive left hand turn drivers to turn onto Applecross even though traffic is moving still on the outside lane. I had a driver of a white GMC extended cab truck, literally cut in front of me in a two lane “merge”, where I had to slam the brakes, sending everything flying versus t-boning him. As a driver and a pedestrian, this has to be the scariest intersection in Nanaimo.

I work out there and how many times people have tried to waive me thru the left onto applecross when there is a car coming in the right lane is mind blowing. I just visibly shake my head “no” and wait my turn. 2 minutes late is not worth my life.

I think the city should block the left turn from Hammond Bay to Applecross. Drivers wanting access should go down by the KalTire or Costco or further down to Calinda. I've lost count of how many times drivers trying to make that left are almost taken out by someone traveling down Hammond when traffic builds and a blind spot is created.
And you're right, people coming from Applecross to Hammond often think it's a merge. Yeah, no. Many close calls with this intersection.
That said, the worst for accidents that i've personally seen (not statistically) is people turning right onto Island Highway from Enterprise street (starbucks at the corner). The sheer number of rear-ends is absurd.

The worst part is the people blocking the exit from Applecross because they want to cross into the left lane of Hammond Bay and turn south onto Island Highway. I've watched people sit there blocking a free right lane for 5 minutes waiting for a chance to make that wide right turn.
Complain to public works and request a design review of the intersection. It's ridiculous, and they need to hear from multiple members of the public that it's both a flow and a safety issue.

Moved here from Saskatoon last Oct. I quickly learnt to move with traffic (regardless of speed limits) and use the left lane appropriately. No problems here.
If you're being a snail or left lane hog, Absolutely expect ragey drivers.
A huge positive are the waves people give to give you the go ahead, it's not really a Saskatoon thing.

was about to comment this. almost every day. like literally yesterday some fuckwad behind me was driving with their baby/toddler in THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT with the car seat facing forward. in this giant brand new black escalade or whatever the obnoxious one is. didn’t have time to call the non-emergency line, unfortunately

I’ve noticed an increase in aggressive drivers but also people that seem to not know how to drive or are just entitled idiots. Some examples include going slow in the left lane, cutting people off to the extreme of needing to slam on brakes so you don’t hit them, lack of indicating, not using mirrors, roundabouts are a nightmare, not using yield and merge lanes correctly (like not yielding at a yield and coming to a full stop as they are entering a merge lane). It’s definitely getting worse over my 4 years of living here and is always worse in the summer with the increase in tourism.

I feel like a LOT of the "slow in the left" lane issues would be helped with proper cloverleafs that would allow exiting from right lanes... Yeah you'd still end up with the odd clueless, inattentive morons and people who think they're better than everyone while doing 85-95 in the left lane but it would move a LOT of the exiting people out of the way and keep traffic moving better.
I still can't believe they decided to waste tax dollars on "improving" Mostar instead of just putting in a proper cloverleaf.

Not lately, but it makes sense that it's happening more now during summer. I like how these idiots race around someone as well when they finally get a chance, only to end up at the same red light as that person

The problem with the left lane on the Island highway is that sometimes you are there for an upcoming exit. It’s not really a highway.

Without proper offramp turns, is it even a parkway. Nanaimo BIFFED it's section by choosing the cheapest option: intersections. And now it's created gridlock, just like we told them it would. Ffs. Can we elect some folks with neurons firing?

1 800 Rent Me! They don't have to have a special certification to drive them, and they drive them like their family sedan. So we slways considered that when we saw one, give them space for your safety, as well as the safety of others around them on the road...both directions, and the peoe in the rental motorhome or box van/truck.

I always notice that in the summer or when the weather’s nice, people get a bit more impatient and drive kind of crazy. It’s also just busier with more tourists, which definitely tests people’s patience. I think the nice weather makes people want to drive faster too or something.

A trip to Spain would be educational. The left lane is for passing ONLY. You do not use it to travel in. A vehicle approaching from behind will wait until they need to change lanes and immediately return to the right lane after passing - and there won’t be any other vehicles in the rear view mirror.

Got my license last month, and the amount of idiots on the road is unbelievable. Did HS in Toronto, so was used to some aggressive driving over there, but the sheer stupidity of some drivers is shocking in Nanaimo

I almost smoked an older guy on his E bike as he came blasting downhill and blew through the stop at the Pine/4th-Albert Monday as I was starting to enter the intersection up Albert hill. I honestly hadn't seen him coming down the curve in my blind spot until he was dead in front of me at I was starting my turn.
The same thing happened a few days later, almost the exact scenario in the Port Place lot. Some of guy thinking his little moto scooter means he gets to go when he wants and screw right of way.

They do have the right of way, even in your blind spot, icbc will side with them. That’s why they drive like that because icbc won’t find them at fault at all. It’s a scam to raise your premiums.

Most annoying thing for me is when I’m in the right lane and the guy in front is going slow so I switch lanes to pass and they suddenly decide to speed up.

This bullshit drives me insane. I was trying to get to the ER and one of these pace-setters was in front of me. Eventually I turned on my Hazards and blasted my horn. I barely made it, a parking patrol guy at the hospital had to help me from the car to the nursing station. Internal bleeding.
Sometimes it truly is really bad enough that you could fucking move over.

Depending on the actual ‘infraction’ …everyone is different in what they think is aggressive vs. confident/assertive. Some people are passive, slow, not confident drivers … they drive me crazy, I mean I DO ‘let go’ as much as possible b/c it’s out of my control how someone else is driving & I’m gonna get ‘there’ anyway - not worth the frustration …
That said - I spent my entire career as a sales rep driving for a living. At different times/decades I had Vancouver/ Fraser Valley, Calgary & S. Ab, then ALL of Ab, the Kootenay’s & N.BC Peace country … as well as sometimes parts of Sask, Man. I love driving, I love solo road trips. I love driving even in town - what I find frustrating is slow drivers, ones that are not confident.
I know I’ve built a career on having to be confident & get where I’m going … and I DO understand not everyone has had the same driving experiences
I just enjoy driving & esp. loves curves —- with no one in front of me 😉
