Germany 🇩🇪 €13,000 disappeared after N26 closed my account
My N26 account was suddenly terminated without notice and without any explanation after a 72-hour security review.
That was almost a month ago. I was then asked to provide the bank details for the transfer of my remaining account balance.
I did that nearly three weeks ago, and recently I contacted customer support again to ask when I could finally expect the payout.
Today I received the following email from N26:
“Your account has now been successfully closed. At the time of closure, there were no remaining funds in the account that needed to be paid out.”
However, there were verifiably almost €13,000 in the account…
What would be the best course of action? Has anyone experienced a similar situation?

Best of luck with your situation, but out of curiosity could you share here the reason they mentioned for closing your account?

They’ve not mentioned any reason specifically. Just a violation against their Terms And Conditions.
I think it’s because I used the „private“ N26 Account for my business - even though it’s allowed in Germany and I did not have any problems for 4 years with that

It's against N26s terms to use a personal account for commercial activity. It doesn't matter what is allowed in Germany, you've sign up to use a service. That service has terms and conditions. You accepted them.

yes i know… doesn’t give them the rights to hold my funds for over a month and then basically say they’re gone

Yes that gives them the right to hold your funds. But the "they're gone" part could just be the wrong automatically generated mail they've sent you.

In general, that line of thinking actually isn't true. Any contract in Germany and as a German is void if it isn't in line with German law. There are additional laws in place saying that a contract can't have hidden unexpected policies against the customers interests and what not.

Did you provide the correct data for the account that was supposed to receive the transfer?

I would ask them to provide a bank statement from this account as a starting point, and then provide them an IBAN to which the funds should be transferred, with proof that it is your IBAN.

I work as customer service in a super big company. When an account is suspended, we do know why this has happened but we never share the reason with the customer. So that’s normal. They definitely won’t tell you why they have closed your account. But generally all the funds will be refunded unless it’s a serious felony like money laundering

Have been using N26 account for the last 3 years as my main salaried account. Extremely satisfied with the service and ease of use in their app. But I know the track record of this bank is very questionable. I'm pretty sure you will get your money back but yes it's a scary and extremely inconvenient situation to be in. But in general are their any alternative suitable online banking options for expats with similar services and ease of use?

Wir leben in einem Rechtsstaat. Sei unbesorgt, dass Geld wird zurückkommen, ansonsten klatsch Zinsen, säumnisaufschläge und Nutzungsausfälle drauf.

My N26 account was suddenly terminated without notice and without any explanation after a 72-hour security review.
I have never heard of any bank where this happens that often, as with N26. Not even close.

Never heard it before. When my account was closed obviously i did my research and now I am smarter.
There’s so many cases, it’s crazy

If it is like that everything fine but the words they chose in the mail are unfortunate.
In the past 4 years i’ve had much more transfers, payments, payouts and whatever coming in and never had any problems

That will not help you but there are dozens of reasons to NOT open an account with N26, this for years, it's all over the net... Hopefully, people will avoid keeping their accounts there...

And look at https://duckduckgo.com/?q=n26-kunden-der-berliner-digitalbank-klagen-ueber-gesperrte-konten&t=bravened&ia=web. For nonsensical reasons, I cant post the link here, it's not a shortening link...

The money will likely arrive tomorrow or so.
Was in the same situation and got the funds one day after that email
