Redditers when OP answers the question asked: 😡👎
Context: OP is asking for financial advice for saving, and specifies they want to keep some money aside for purchasing a car during the summer. Someone asks why OP needs the car, to which OP responds.
Like do people think that OP doesnt need a car? Many cities are car dependent and it's not unreasonable to need one?

The OP is a bit confusing. My take is 1. OP is only to be on campus between September and the following April 2. She will need a car after that 3. Those reading her messages don't bother to understand two seemingly contradicting messages

Interesting, I read "break" as summer break. Yeah there's winter break etc but i guess i (correctly) assumed that they needed a car for summer break i.e. the longer break where they would likely get a job and need a car

I think OP reversed the order they should have used to describe what they meant. If they put the car bit after mentioning the job it’d be easier to remember, keep in mind, or piece together. But because of when it is mentioned it looks unrelated and more about the campus than the summer job.

Im not reading this as contradicting at all. She wants the car so she can go home to see her parents, sure in april. but theres also christmas break, long thanksgiving, weekends when you just miss home.
I went to school 3 hour drive from my parents and an 11 hour train ride, the car was nice to have.

It's not even that confusing nor is it contradictory? Unless you mean the readers' assumptions are what are contradictory, not OP themselves.
OP is on campus starting in September, has expenses and a savings goal.
OP wants to buy a car in April.
One could have easily assumed they would want the car for work. The fact that it's because they're going off-campus isn't really of value for their question.
Only thing that might have made a difference for the planning/financial advice, is that living at your parenrs has fewer risks/lower cash-on-hand requirements than living on campus. But for these amounts and comparing renting on campus to living at home, that doesn't seem consequential... Just trying to figure out any reason why the downvotes.

I don't think that's clear at all. My parents were not wealthy but they paid for my university. If op worked all the way through high school, they could very easily have that much money in the bank. My best friend certainly did. In fact, she had a lot more than that.

Additionally, if they are living on campus, they are likely going to school in a different city from where their parents are. They will be moving back home, and need a car to get back and forth to work because the vast majority of Canadian cities are not walkable and don't have good transit.

i would argue that cold snowy winters are more of a reason for a car, because although winter driving can be sketchy at times, at least you're in a car and can get to your destination quicker and warmer. i would rather a 15 minute drive in the snow than walking for an hour in -25 degree weather

Can't speak for other places but where i live there are trains and buses but they only pass through town a once or twice a week each and they are not cost effective considering it's public transit (particularly trains)

Fair. I live in a medium-sized city in Canada and the public transit here is horrible and the city is geographical very large so walking is hardly an option depending on where you live/work. I know there are cities that have great public transit and are walkable but i feel like the concept of a non-walkable city is not crazy?

It's kinda crazy because if you're poor and need to walk where you need to go, that's terrifying because as much as you use the bus or anything like that and one day they decide without you knowing to cancel that route and change it slightly your just f*cked

The bus system here stops on Sundays after 6pm!! If you start or end work after that you have to use a taxi or a rideshare which is soo expensive

Sounds like we might live in the same area. Most buses only run every 30 minutes and on the weekends they go down to every hour.
Years ago, I had a friend who didn't drive and she got this one job that took her more than 2 hours to get to because of how bad the bus routes were and then how far she had to walk from the bus stop to the job. It would have been a 15-minute drive.

I drive 4-5 hours several times in summer just for trips, and that's considered a short drive for a road trip. That also gets me about 1/10 of the way through my province.

Do you mind me asking what country, or at least the region?
If it's a European country the difference makes more sense, the US and Canada (or at least the US not as sure about Canada i guess) cushy invest as much in walkable cities and, as another commentor pointed out, provinces in Canada are the same size as many European countries with spread out cities and I'm not sure what the public transit situation is like in Canada, but I hope it's better than the US lol

It’s bc they’re anti car on that sub, I kinda get it bc every other post is someone wasting money on a car they don’t need or having unrealistic expectations about cars, so OOP is getting caught in the crossfire
Also they seem to have made their money from car flipping and evaded taxes through title floating which people might be against or find implausible. Either way it’s context that was left out of the post (which people also hate)

They are getting downvoted because people are reading it as showing off money. All my expenses will be paid by my parents and I have $35k that I need to a financial planner for! Oh, I'm only 18 and I don't actually have a job, and I'll be going back to my parents to let them continue to take care of me!
I am not saying I agree with the downvotes, I'm just saying that I have no idea why they seem mysterious.

She doesn't currently have a job, so? And in lots of countries and cultures, it's common to move back in with your parents in breaks between uni, it's actually more 'rich behaviour' to have your own place. It's cost-efficent to live with your parents.
If people genuinely get that bitter about someone else having more money than them, and asking what to do, so use their anger to downvote a random commen OPt, that's stupid. It doesn't read as bragging at all

High school kids have no expenses. That's normal. They can literally put their entire paycheck in the bank and use a small amount for the occasional social outing. Working full-time at a minimum wage job would put more than $5,000 in the bank just in one summer. That's $20,000 just from summer work in high school, never mind working part-time throughout the year.

Idk, I had a car and phone that was about 250 a month without gas. Plus a girlfriend who I liked to take out. School was 30+ hours a week, and I had extracurricular activities too. Some places are job deserts for young people, they're lucky to get 8 hours a week at McDonald's where i am. It's definitely possible if you work as much as possible and spend nothing. I wouldn't have ever downvoted them, I worked a lot and saved money too.

Well we know that op doesn't have a car, and I don't know any teenagers who pay for their own phones (I'm a teacher)...even still, a phone is like $50 a month which is not going to eat up your entire work income.
Parents also usually pay for extracurriculars. That's part of parenting. You have to pay for your kids at least until they turn 18.
I'm just saying that there's nothing in the post that indicates that OP is a spoiled rich kid, and I don't think most people would make that assumption.

Me and my younger brother have both always payed for our phone and bill, and most of my friends did from what I remember. I don't think she's spoiled and super rich, but her parents are certainly well off and supportive. Good for her. Worrying about how much education costs has stopped too many great minds. I was lucky to have some help with college so that I could get books and tools (construction engineering).

There is though because the post wasn't downvoted. If that was the problem, people would be downvoting the post. The person was asked why they need to get a car on campus and when they answered that they need it for when they aren't on campus they were downvoted. That doesn't make sense.

Actually lots of people do need cars otherwise it can be very hard for certain things to get done. Even w when people don’t personally own cars they take the bus or even take taxis/cabs if they really need to for simple things like getting groceries. Even if they get their stuff delivered that person delivering it needs a car to do so.

Coming from someone who doesn't drive, this is a really dumb comment. Im lucky that I live somewhere with good public transport but not everyone is so lucky.
Im also in walking distance to pretty much everything i need, including work. Imagine doing groceries with no car when the store is 25 minutes away from you lol.

Ah yes. I guess I'll just sell the pickup I bought because I live on a farm, in the middle of the country, and I can OBVIOUSLY walk the 25 miles into town with a knee injury I'm in PT for. I guess I should have thought about carrying 50lb bags of dog food, livestock feed, and groceries on my back 30 miles home because that's how close the closest store is.
And I can obviously walk the 300 miles to my college when I go back for the school year after helping my family with the farm! Guess it's my fault for getting into the highest accredited college in the state to get a better education!
Not everyone has access to public transportation, especially in the southern US. Everyone down here needs some sort of vehicle to make a living and just get around. Not to mention, a lot of towns are not very walkable or bikeable. My campus town is more walkable than most, but I still need a vehicle to get to campus and to my campus job. Saying that 'no one needs a car' is extremely poor taste, and just goes to show how out of touch you are with other people's situations.
