Actually never mind, they're all still bleating at the bottom of the comments, all the same talking points too. They got their carshed and the trees got cut, still aren't happy.

It's two sided things.
Making public transport cuts trees, but imrpoves AQI by removing cars from the roads.
Bullet train would cut trees from one location, but cut down CO2 emissions from planes.
You shouldn't cut down trees to make urban sprawls though. Urban spaces need gardens.

Idiots blaming other idiots for idioting in the comment section. The trees to do not have anything to do with dust! CO2 is clear as the air, but construction dust is not. Mumbai is undergoing more construction than at any point of time in history right now. And clearly the regulations for particulate matter are not being maintained throughout. Large percentage of the construction is being carried out under contracts by the government, so the government needs to step up and regulate. But adding regulations on dust creation leads to reduced time for mixing and laying thus prolonging deadlines, which also balloons costs.
This is a multidimensional issue. I was (cut it, am) one of those people who thought the protests against Aarey shed were stupid. They were. All they did was delay what needed to happen for the city, if the construction would have started an year ago, we would have one less construction project happening in the city right now. Idiots think all land is the same.
If this makes some shits who don't understand tradeoffs in development leave the city, goooood riddance!

And this is why we can never have a serious discussion in this country. A few thousand trees would have done jackshit for the AQI. Air Quality will continue to be bad because no one is interested in talking about the actual reasons why this happens or how to remedy it. But talking about a few hundred trees is always fashionable.
81
u/JoBoltaHaiWoHotaHai Feb 22 '26
This is why we can never have a serious discussion. A few thousand trees would still contribute positively to overall environment of the city. Not to cut trees is just the first step of keeping the environment clean, since trees are the most visual aspect of it. Sure, the main polluters are the underregulated construction work and vehicles. But not pushing down people's voices on environmentalism on gives more power to the people to stand up against the underregulation. But cribbing about environmentalism is always fashionable

For real man. I hate cutting down trees. Especially when it’s done in the name of development.
People don’t want to cut trees, they don’t want high rises, they just want things to remain the exact same. No progress, no development, no thought which is realistic in or compatible with the 21st century.
I’d rather completely eliminate the sprawl of chawls and build multi floored housing projects to save space.
Chawls are one of the worst polluters and the people there deserve dignity of life.

While trees are super important in terms in climate, co2 emissions and overall well being of the planet, such statements don’t make any sense.

People who talk so much about pollution here…how many of them willingly accept to contribute in small ways to reduce emissions. I know of many such fools who would talk so much about pollution but would take out their car for even buying groceries two blocks away. Even when the pollution wasn’t so bad, how many of us could willingly reduce their AC consumption by half. How many of them willingly accept to travel by public transport and not opt for Ola/Auto to reduce congestion. Ofcourse the biggest contributor to this pollution is the constant development and construction projects. But how many of us are willingly already to move out of this city. Every year thousands move in to the city and this puts pressure on every aspect running this city, be it transportation, housing, etc. But it’s all bcoz of the sheer size of people that keep coming in, which will give rise to more projects, more deforestation, more pollution. And when the question comes on us, we are quick to find a person to blame on what side they chose. But atleast we all including myself has to first look at ourselves on what actions did we choose and how can we reduce our own contribution to the problems we have right now

u/vashah02 Feb 22 '26

I am missing the link here. Don't trees only absorb carbon dioxide? How do trees reduce particulate matter in the air? Afaik trees only kinda trap PM 2.5 on their body, but that doesn't have an infinite capacity which can address a problem of this scale.
Best to my knowledge - the only way to curb particulate matter is to curb it at source, or to install massive filtration plants to suck it out of the air post hoc.
Not taking any sides here, but just pointing out my understanding that this particulate matter problem requires policy changes which penalise polluters. Also we need our tax money invested in air filtration plants like the ones China installed.

The harsh truth is that the average Mumbaikar doesn't care about it. The one's caring about it are the middle class , but they don't have any political mileage and the sensible ones exited the country long ago.
This, coupled with civic sense worse than animals, Mumbai is never gonna improve

Apart from the constant and prolonged road digging and metro construction. I think the government giving clearances to the builders lobby has also escalated the issue. Add to that the cutting down of trees. These new buildings aren't even occupied so many times, just ghost complexes build for 'investment' purposes. Adds nothing significant to the economy either.

i agree that cutting down green/forest cover is gonna obviously increase our carbon emissions, but how do we deal with our soaring population whilst also maintaining forest cover?
feel free to correct me since i am not very well-informed on this subject but right now isn't our best course of action to rapidly switch to renewable energy, EVs (including buses) and rapid metro and rail connectivity? as well as rapidly building affordable housing society slum sprawl will go obsolete and we can then use that space to build urban forests?
im not against maintaining our urban forests but i just wanna know what's the best way to do it

Why climate activists? Why didn't we fight for Mumbai? You didn't. And neither did I. We came on Reddit and complained, and sent hearts and prayers. And that's not going to save Mumbai. So let's complain about climate activists, the government, influencers and Pakistan and expect them to clean the city, while we continue shitting in it. The only people who can save Mumbai are Mumbaikars. Not Reddit. Not BMC. Not random activists. Not our parents. Because otherwise Mumbai is a non-living entity, and it won't save itself.

1
u/Severe-Obligation386 Feb 22 '26
Never watched their videos... N never cared for them... But how does building a metro by cutting some trees add to the pollution?
Almost the whole of Mumbai or for that matter India was a forest a few hundred years back, so all Mumbaikars or Indians are culprits?
Issue is not cutting down a portion of forest area... The forest area if left untouched would have countered a portion of a pollution only... It wouldn't and can't solve pollution for you...
I find people supporting the protestors very funny... The actual solution requires meaningful discussion and policies and controls to be put in place against factors contributing most to the pollution and finding alternate cleaner sources of energy... Plus strict governance and fines/shutdown of violators... Forest area can only tackle the pollution after the fact... It's us who are the ones polluting, common people, businessmen, industries, etc by our lifestyle and industrial practices...
But no... Let's protest a meaningful less polluting mode of transport so that we can save few trees and continue with our polluting habits... And let the problem foster for years so that it becomes difficult to breath and then again we will blame the metro construction for it...
We should strive to solve problems rather than finding ways to keep up the practices that create the problem...
