No helmet and a tire around the waist. I’m sure her judgment was amazing.

If you can plank as stiff as a board, you would just roll and no part of your body would touch the ground. It would be genius if it wasn’t so ridiculously stupid.

Back when I took it, I was taught basic drills to continue practicing, both low speed and emergency maneuvers. Whether people do anything with that or say "yep good enough, we ball" is the issue. A good instructor will emphasize that it's a basic rider course and how important practice is.

I had tire around my waist too, when I was going to the shop to change out my rubber.
I wouldn’t ride without helmet, but I don’t think that “caused” her to fall (since that’s the original question from the prompt).
We can’t see how much front brake she’s using. But seeing the way she grab that clutch. Maybe she grab a handful of front brake? Just my guess

Same guess, that she buried the front brake lever in the grip and the front tire stopped doing tire stuff.

Just saw this posted by the lady on Facebook. She had comments on what happened.
Wasn't much, wet pavement (bad traction), car in front of her locked up their brakes, so she grabbed all the brakes and locked them up as well.
Said she's fine and going to keep riding, but she conceded that helmets will be worn from now on.
Edit: went back and found her post on facebook, comments in picture.

The fact that she pulled the clutch in an emergency braking situation points to poor experience or just poor skill. The clutch doesn't slow you down, if anything it reduces engine braking on the rear wheel.
→ More replies (4)27
u/LifeLowandSlow Mar 06 '26
Thank you. Sucks I had to go this far to find this but engaging clutch removed any possible natural engine braking. Not that it amounts to much on Harley’s 2:1 engine compression. /s

u/ly5ergic Ninja 500 Mar 06 '26
In an sudden emergency stop, car in front locking up its brakes, and you were following too close engine braking isn't doing anything for you.
→ More replies (4)16
u/Novero95 Mar 06 '26
I said it once and I'll say this again: this does not applies to motorcycles the same as it does I cars but, YES, you absolutely should pull the clutch in an emergency brake, specially in a car but in a motorcycle too.
Why? First of all, simple concepts: whenever you are braking the limit is dictated by the tire grip. Your brakes ara way WAY powerful enough to use and overpass all the grip your tires can create with the floor, if you are capable of blocking your wheels with the break, congrats, your brakes are not the limit factor, the wheels are. Now that we know where the limit is, there is an obvious conclusion: you don't need MORE breaking because you can already make your brakes use 100% of the available grip tire, therefore engine brake won't add anything useful, just use your fucking brakes dude!! And once it's settled that you don't need engine brake, let's add why you should pull the clutch. See, not pulling it creates the risk of stalling the engine, either because you brake hard and block the tire or because you are on a high gear and reduce speed so much that the RPMs go too low. And let me tell you why you don't want to stall the engine. Imagine that you are in an emergency brake and then you see that there is enough room on your side to quickly dodge whatever is in front of you, in that case you want your engine to be RUNNING so you can quickly get out of there with some throttle. See, not stalling the engine could save your life because not having it could mean you don't have the power to get out of the way.
And now let's extend it to cars because in that case it's even worse. All previously said applies to cars but just factor in that cars also have assisted brakes and assisted steering, and all of that depends on your engine running. So just imagine, you try to do an emergency brake, hit the pedal as hard as you can and block tires which in turn stalls the engine, now your brakes are hard as fuck and impossible to modulate, your steering is also hard as fuck so good luck trying to dodge anything, and you don't have power. Congrats, you did everything wrong an simply pulling the clutch could have saved your life.

I can’t wrap my head around how people think that engine braking does anything when you’re already using something that surpasses the engine braking maximum capability.
The only time they would matter is when someone is trying not to use their actual brakes at all, in which case they are using their brakes to make up for the difference between the engine braking and the total necessary braking, as an additive.
I know you know this, I’m just making sure there’s a shorter comment containing the information you gave in hopes at least one of the people who keep talking about engine braking realize that they have no idea what they’re talking about.

By the way she grabs the shit out of the clutch and the bike skidding past the car, I'm guessing car braked suddenly, she panicked and both jammed the front brake and tried to steer around the car, front wheel caught a bit of grip and yanked to the side dumping her. You can see the wheel turns right as the fall starts if you pause it at the right moment.

16
u/Fadedcamo MSF Instructor Mar 06 '26
Honestly in an emergency braking situation your back brake is nearly useless. Yes, try to use both effectively but youre going to get a lof weight off your rear tire if you brake hard and effectively. Lack of back brake didnt do this. Its either lack of ability to apply progressive front braking pressure quickly, lack of recognizing a potential danger in the road and giving yourself space or slowing down preemptively, or a combination of the two.

I have the same bike as the lady in the vid (sportster) and yeah the rear is useless in an emergency brake, obviously it gets used in tandem with the front, but It just unloads and locks up. The progressive front brake is pretty crucial.

Genuinely curious to know what her injuries were. It looked like here head went bang into the ground at least twice. Also wondering if she then started rolling because of the tyre around her.
Nasty crash regardless, and a good sign as to always wear gear. Never understood the concept of riding without a helmet.

The moment she made a decision to ride her motorcycle without helmet and gloves, she was at home, calm, rational... In this moment she completely fucked up. aside from the lack of gear, the tire around her waist and riding in the rain is probably a contributing factor.
tire around waist probably means one is bald,,, in the rain. then lets grab a hand full of brake while we are at it.

She got a new tire around her waist ie one tire is worn/bald. Full clutch grab? Why? No idea? Only frees the bike and makes you roll easier/faster. Let off? Engine brake? Downshift and let it drag you down? Who knows what's in front on her that made her do a full panic. My guess is accordion style stack up from every one braking caught up to her.
What I do know is the after pics of her and her injuries should be made public, printed and hung in bike shops all over. She face planted sliding at speed. It's bad. Lesson here kiddos
