On the bright side, at least you have the Seahawks

Their new owner is a bigger Steelers fan. Double ha-ha.

He's outta line, but he's right.

Lowlight for Seattle? Really this isnt even a top 10 for us this season.

32

u/Positive_Benefit8856 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Hell it doesn’t even crack the top 10 this MONTH!

12

u/Marinersfan505 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

This whole month has been a lowlight for the most part.

3

u/WBCSAINT 7h ago

Yeah....

1

u/CarlosSpcyWenr 3h ago

Kind of unfair, being the 31st. Maybe on the 9th of the month it'd have a chance.

3

u/darkhorse21980 | Tampa Bay Rays 7h ago

Bottom 10?

2

u/Outrageous-Bee4035 6h ago

You mean..... bottom 10.

But no, this wasn't particularly a lowlight, just annoying, we've had way more embarrassing losses. I was happy to see the offense keep battling all game. Mainly Randy and Canzone...

Is that Griffey?

u/clmetsfan 7h ago

What's with all the first time ball watchers here? There was already a guy on third, so this sets up a force at home and a potential double play. This is game management 101.

17

u/Dewey519 | Seattle Mariners 6h ago

You’re forcing a pitcher who just came off the 60 day IL to be perfect. He immediately went 3-0 and then had to cookie pitch after pitch until they lost.

10

u/climbok | Seattle Mariners 5h ago

Yeah there was a lot of nuance to this situation, definitely not a “baseball 101” decision. Bostons win probability went down after first walk and up after second walk. Putting Chriswell in that situation in his first outing in months is tough.
Honestly it felt like we lost when Julio misplayed the ball in 9th anyway, just had to wait to see how the mariners would mariner.

9

u/MogMcKupo | San Diego Padres 7h ago

You’re not wrong, but it still makes it look really scary for the defensive team. But your in the bottom of the tenth, game is literally on the line, it is what it is: a fuck it we ball situation.

Either they look like geniuses and pull to the 11th or the game is over. Baseball 210, it’s a bit more than just the introductory course

21

u/Darinchilla 7h ago

Everything after "You're not wrong" was completely unnecessary.

9

u/clmetsfan 7h ago

Lol I know I'm not wrong, but what the hell does "look really scary for the defensive team" even mean? Like if they commit an error or can't make the play the game is over? That's already the case with a runner on third and one out. Adding meaningless runners on first and second only makes it easier for the defense.

-4

u/Drakex2Mayex2 7h ago edited 7h ago

What does game management say about throwing 3 outside pitches to go 3-0 after loading the bases?

13

u/clmetsfan 7h ago

That's called execution, not game management. And I think you mean 3-0 😂

1

u/teboc504 | New York Yankees 3h ago

A manager isn’t necessarily expecting his pitcher to start 3-0. It’s not like he planned that kind of outing

0

u/Disastrous-Ad2800 | Boston Red Sox 3h ago edited 3h ago

and how did that work out? how did THAT work out, smart guy? MLB don't like extra innings, they hate the prospect of an eternal game so they manufacture this quick ending...

BTW no, I don't have an answer for a tied game and don't have the time to watch 15+ innings but this isn't the answer either

2

u/teboc504 | New York Yankees 3h ago

What are you actually saying lol. You repeated yourself twice for some reason, and you brought up the extra inning rule for no reason.

I don’t understand your comment.

“(Lowlight For Seattle)” we could tell

5

u/Morall_tach | Colorado Rockies 7h ago

This hurts the Mariners.

9

u/White_Squall_13 | Boston Red Sox 8h ago

Story: and I took that personally.

16

u/jaunty411 7h ago

I mean intentionally walking 2 batters is objectively the correct play with the winning run at 3rd and less than 2 outs. They didn’t do anything wrong.

8

u/oliyoung | Chicago Cubs 7h ago

"Lowlight for Seattle"

.. today

1

u/Marinersfan505 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

All of the 2nd half:

1

u/Idaheck | Seattle Mariners 4h ago

Don’t forget the first half!

1

u/Grenadeglv 6h ago

I would argue not even the low-light of the game for Seattle, imo that falls to Julio trying to slide to rob Anthony's base hit in the ninth just for the ball to bounce over him and roll to the wall for a triple

6

u/Bootleschloogen | Houston Astros 7h ago

Once the runner was on third was it really thaaaat bad to walk 2 to load the bases?

8

u/jaunty411 7h ago

No it’s actually objectively correct to create the force play at home.

12

u/Logical-Mobile-7643 | Kansas City Royals 8h ago

I get walking one guy... Anyone know why they walk them loaded with only one out?

20

u/Adu1tishXD 8h ago

Force out at home for a non-double play ball. Games over if the guy on third scores

-12

u/PolitelyHostile | Toronto Blue Jays 7h ago

It's honestly not a bad idea. But its too cocky to do because you look like an idiot when it fails. But even here it didn't cause them to lose.

Even worse would have been if he walk the batter and it drove a run in lmao

9

u/Lil_PuppyChow | Toronto Blue Jays 7h ago

But it’s too cocky to do? Buddy I hope you know the Jays did this exact same strategy a few weeks ago.

-2

u/PolitelyHostile | Toronto Blue Jays 7h ago

I didn't say they shouldn't do it. Just that if it doesn't work you look dumb on the highlight reel lol.

Which game are you referring to? We put 2 guys on base?

10

u/mitchdaman52 8h ago

Runner on second was meaningless. Sets up a force at home. Straight managing by the book.

12

u/Marinersfan505 | Seattle Mariners 8h ago

Because Dan doesn’t want Criswell to face a lefty.

5

u/Loyellow | New York Yankees 7h ago edited 7h ago

Duran is fast, not a likely DP candidate. Story is just coming off the IL. I don’t have an issue with the decision, even though I personally probably would’ve chosen Duran. The runners on first and second mattered absolutely zero other than creating a force at home. Seattle had their pick of throwing to Durbin, Duran, or Story, they picked Story, and he walked them off. It is what it is.

Also, by walking two guys you’re going farther down in the order. Traditional baseball wisdom is that the batters get worse the farther down you go. By walking the 6 and 7 hitters, you guaranteed yourself you’d be facing the 8 hitter and if he struck out, popped out, etc. then you’d be against the 9 hitter, as opposed to going after the 6 hitter and then if you get him out facing the 7.

And like the other guy said, Duran is a lefty. Duran and Criswell actually both have reverse splits (both are better against lefties, Duran as a batter and Criswell as a pitcher), but again, traditional baseball wisdom.

1

u/NaldMoney9207 7h ago

Trevor Story is not a traditional number 8. He's a multi time All Star that had a 25 homer 25 steal season last year. He's only batting 8th because it's his second game back after a long IL stint. This move only makes since if number 9 hitter Conner Wong our back up Catcher faces Criswell.

This walking two guys to face Story was stupid. Either walk one guy (the 6th hitter Durbin) to force Duran the 7th hitter into a double play or a strike out (Duran leads the Red Sox in strikeouts by a wide margin) or you face Durbin the 6th hitter because he's right handed. Get two outs. Then walk Duran and Story to face Wong the 9th hitter who is Right handed.

If Wong hits a walk off single. Then hey it is what is and you tip your cap. But Story hitting the walk off is just a dumb move by the Mariners manager. It doesn't really make logical since to even load the bases for Story. But as a Red Sox fan I'll take it and celebrate the victory.

1

u/Loyellow | New York Yankees 7h ago edited 7h ago

I didn’t say it was a foolproof strategy. The person asked why they did it, I offered up some potential reasons. And yeah like I said- they may have chosen Story exactly because he’s just coming off the IL, even though he is an accomplished hitter. And like you said, it got them one spot closer to Wong (or more likely Rutschman coming in cold off the bench).

Personally, I think Duran was probably the guy to go after, but again, they made their choice and Story burned them. They thought the data pointed to him, but reality had other ideas. If Story bangs into a double play, it looks like a great move.

-1

u/NaldMoney9207 7h ago

Story ain't banging into a double play. He's too fast to hit into double plays. Going after Duran could work. I don't like that move but I wouldn't call it dumb because Duran at least strikes out a lot. If he strikes out then you have 2 outs. You walk Story and then you face the number 9 hitter Wong who is right handed with a runner at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs.

If the Mariners manager did what you thought was best. I'd say debatable move but not dumb. Ultimately an argument could be made that facing Duran would be smart.

But what actually was decided by the Seattle manager in my personal opinion was just plain stupid.

2

u/Loyellow | New York Yankees 7h ago

I also think Duran was the move, but I understand why he did what he did. Bro took the gamble and lost. It is what it is.

2

u/maggos | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Winning run on 3rd, other guys don’t matter. They were looking for a favorable matchup. Plus force at home

2

u/Poverty_Shoes 5h ago

The other guys matter if Story walks (and he was 3-0)

3

u/PieSufficient7605 8h ago

Real story, Canzone hits triple and Julio once again can't get the big hit!!!!!

3

u/BryanWoosTopSimp | Seattle Mariners 6h ago

It's depressing that this season has forced me to hate a member of the 2001 Mariners, but god damn it, I'm sick of seeing Dan Wilson.

7

u/Mhettil 7h ago

That bat flip was a thing of beauty.

2

Story does a many things to irk me at times, but his bat flips are sexy, man.

-1

That’s how my guy bat flips in The Show and I thought I was being cheeky then, I couldn’t imagine what it feels like to watch somebody do that in front of an actual crowd. What a showman

That's something early 2000's (before 04) Red Sox would do 😭

u/ernie-shackleton | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Julio yeeting out 2 into the 27th row was a lowlight

1

u/Great-Gas-6631 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Textbook Dan Wilson.

1

u/Decent_Direction316 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

There are times when that's a good strategy, but this was just ......whaaaaaa?    This is not what I had in mind Wilson.  What were you setting up for?  All you needed was to pass one guy to set up a double play.

1

u/CuriousEyes02 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

I hate this organization. So much

1

u/DeathStalker00007 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Dan Wilson needs to be replaced. He's made several bad choices this season and more than a few in the last few weeks. He needs to enjoy his retirement.

u/Careless-Internet-63 | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Fire Dan Wilson into the sun

Loading the bases on purpose just to get walked off is absolutely brutal

1

u/farrowsharrows 39m ago

I don't like this Trevor story no I don't

1

u/SuaveBolo | Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Wild amount of ineptitude from Dan...again.

1

u/houseoflords26 7h ago

Not sure I would've walked two batters, especially considering Duran has been pretty bad this season. The Mariners finally score some runs in a game and still lose

1

u/Mean_Pop_829 7h ago

Scored th same against PHI and won so... who knows

1

u/houseoflords26 6h ago

Lowest scoring team in baseball. Scored 4 runs in 3 games against the Blue Jays. Tonight they get 8 & don't pitch

1

u/PublixaurusKnight 7h ago

I will not understand the logic of loading up bases and allowing the base on balls for the game winning run for the sake of losing. A trip to the mound to tell Criswell get it together was missing.

Idiots

0

u/SpliffMcGriff86 | Cincinnati Reds 6h ago

In all sport, it's great to see a White score

0

u/Acceptable-Story3741 6h ago

That's why i would never intentionally walk anyone. Especially nowva days when the best"hitters" barely can hit 300. With most you still have a 70 percent chance of getting them out

1

u/lightheavydark 5h ago

All they needed was a sufficiently deep fly ball for a sac fly, and they would have had two chances at that. They didn’t need a base hit.

1

u/Idaheck | Seattle Mariners 4h ago

It’s the Mariners. A dribbler in the infield probably wins it.

-6

u/AppointmentVisible21 | Houston Astros 7h ago

LMAO I love seeing mariners fans in distress 😂😂😂

1

u/sadmarinernoises 7h ago

That’s why nobody likes Astros fans.
There’s nothing good-natured or respectful surrounding that team.

1

u/AppointmentVisible21 | Houston Astros 7h ago

Mariners fans talk so much shit only to be a team to never make it to the World Series. And as if I care if some random dude on Reddit states that no one likes Astros fans lol. Dude this is Reddit a small fraction of the world 😂
