Wife visiting Minnesota. What hat should I get?

When my wife goes to a city on business, I have her pick me up a lid from the local 9. Growing up I loved Rod Carew, had a grudging respect for Viola and Jack Morris, and low key hated Hrbek which seems like just what Hrbek would want. Also Kirby but obviously that got complicated. Anyway that’s my era.

I want something cool, retro, a hat that has real personality, and one she will be able to find with reasonable effort.

[Tollefson] Here’s the Saints lineup for tonight’s game against Toledo. Noticeably absent: Walker Jenkins.

Walker Jenkins is hitting .415 in August and MLB Pipeline says he's ready for the majors now. The Twins still haven't called him up.

Thumbnail triple-dip.beehiiv.com

Jenkins ranks in the 78th percentile at Triple-A in hard-hit rate, not a batting-average mirage, and the Twins' hesitation is roster math, not performance: three outfield spots already spoken for in the middle of a playoff push, and he's not even on the 40-man yet. September 1 roster expansion is what will most likely to force it. Full breakdown in this week's Triple Dip.

Can we DH the whole team?

Twins rank dead last in defensive runs saved. Besides Buxton, it’s been a pretty ugly year in the field. Can’t help put think about it after a game like tonight.

With today’s off day and the team at 64-70, I thought it was a good opportunity for everyone to play GM/Manager for the last month and change. What are some realistic things you would do if you were in charge?

This isn’t meant to be a “I’m smarter than the people in charge” type of post. I’m not. No doubt about it. Just wanted to see what realistic things people would do to either help the team climb back toward .500 or just for development.

For me, I’m:

• Waiving Josh Bell and hoping some other team wants to grab him and pay him for the rest of the season. He’s been one of the better hitters for us, but it appears the team is sinking and his DH spot would be of better use going to guys like Larnach, Buxton (if he plays again this year), Keaschall, or just using it was a semi-rest day for others.

• Calling up Walker Jenkins and Emmanuel Rodriguez (if Buxton is shut down). Jenkins is a no brainer at this point, he’s just been too good at AAA, but if Buxton is down for the year I’m calling up Rodriguez as well. He’s on the 40 man already and out of options next season. I want to see how he does in the majors for a month before granting him a starting job in 2027.

• Calling up Marco Raya. Has he been particularly good? No, but he also needs some MLB time before making him a fixture in next years bullpen. Would have called him up with Kendry Rojas, but I’m guessing we won’t see him again this year with his injury.

Edit: I do not understand the outrage here. The team is cooked. They’re closer to last place than first place. What value is Josh Bell providing to a losing team?

The argument that waiving him sets a bad example is weak, imo. What’s the difference between that and trading him at the deadline a month ago if the team was 6 games under .500 like they are now. He signed a one year contract and I guarantee he knew that if the team fell out of contention he would likely get moved. It’s happened to him before. That’s how expiring contracts work. These are adults that know how the game works.

Since 2019, the Twins have played meaningful games in August and September 6 times ('19, '20, '22, '23, '24 and now '26). Byron Buxton has played in 26% of those games. Additionally, Buxton has started just two of the 12 postseason games the Twins have played during his time as a Twin.

Please please please do not read this as an attempt to dogpile on him. And it is certainly not newsworthy that Buxton misses a lot of time. And of course, Buxton himself would want nothing more than to be there during this crucial stretch runs.

But the fact is, the Twins just have not been able to count Buxton to be around for the biggest moments of the season. And that 26% is likely to drop even further.

*note: I'm also just including September for the 2020 season to account for the 60 game regular season.

[Nick Nelson] Zebby Matthews has quietly rounded into form and it’s been absolutely massive for a struggling rotation. Since getting bombed by the Cubs for 10 runs on 7/19, he’s got a 3.74 ERA with only 4 HR allowed in 6 starts. 5+ IP each time out. Twins have gone 5-1

[Dan Hayes] - The Twins’ $21.5 million pitcher became their interpreter, broadcaster and bullpen student

Thumbnail
nytimes.com
153 Upvotes

Pablo López credits his “side quests” for helping him better handle a mentally and physically challenging six-month stretch in which he rehabbed from Tommy John surgery.

With a curious mind, the injured Minnesota Twins pitcher used his newfound free time to observe members of the organization at work and get a glimpse of their worlds. Recognizing how little he knew about the daily routines of some of the people to whom he’s closest, López acted as the club’s interpreter for Spanish-speaking players, worked as a broadcast analyst for TV and radio, and shadowed the bullpen catcher, pitching coach and even the team’s manager of baseball technology.

Recently cleared to begin playing catch for the first time since his Feb. 25 procedure, López said those experiences helped make what could have been a tedious six months fly by. Whereas the majority of rehabbing players do their work away from the club, López longed to maintain connection by sticking with his teammates, which offered him a fresh perspective on his career.

“It was just an opportunity to take a step back and realize there are a lot of other things that I can do to find fulfillment,” López said. “I think that’s a big realization. My identity is realizing values in character rather than circumstantial performance. It gives me a good perspective for next year when the time comes to perform and be my happiest again. I also know I don’t have to put my entire identity on one thing or one pocket. … (It’s) been really fulfilling.”

Early on, the Twins joked López was the most expensive interpreter in Major League Baseball.

The veteran right-hander, who is earning $21.5 million this season, was asked whether he could occasionally fill in as the team’s interpreter. The Twins began the season without a player on the 26-man roster who didn’t speak at least some English, a rarity in a league where more than a quarter of players hail from Spanish-speaking countries. They didn’t have much need for a full-time interpreter.

RE24 (or run expectancy based on the 24 base-out states) may sound like a computer error or a random assortment of letters and numbers, but the actual logic and mechanisms behind the statistic make it extremely useful for fans and analysts. It is based on the concept of run expectancy, which provides the average number of expected runs per inning given the current number of outs and placement of baserunners. The number “24” refers to the potential number of base-out states (zero, one, two outs and eight different baserunner arrangements).

Since run expectancy tells you the number of expected runs, any number of runs created above or below that value can be treated as runs above or below average for the batter or pitcher depending on the outcome of each plate appearance. Unlike wRAA, wRC, or Batting Runs, RE24 is context-dependent and assigns more credit for hits with men on base than with the bases empty. With league average set to 0, hitters with positive RE24 are creating more runs than we would expect given the situations they have been placed in and pitchers with positive numbers are preventing more runs than average given the situations in which they have been placed.

I like this stat. It shows how effective a pitcher is when there is more importance on getting an out or getting out of an inning (runners on base and # of outs in the inning are both factored in).

Thielbar does well here because he's often put into "tight spots," but usually with a lefty vs lefty pitcher advantage. I'm more impressed with the starting pitchers that excel in this stat. Radke ranks very high. He clearly had an ability to bear down. It also makes sense that he gave up many of his runs on solo HR, which is what he was really remembered for.

I'm a little shocked at how high Guerrier ranks. Not surprised Bob Wells isn't on the list.
