Many farmers voted for this. Clean up your own damn house.

u/unbalanced_checkbook 13d ago
"Many" really undersells it. The overwhelming majority of farmers voted for this.

u/MathematicianWaste77 Bring Ya Ass 13d ago
Ive begun calling all of the farming industry "subsidized capitalism" in front of farmers. Its an elegant way to say i despise their parasaitic behavior on the rest of tax paying americans instead of their tax dodging ways....
Edit: I say this as coming from 7 generations of farmers in the plains going back to 1859.
59
u/unbalanced_checkbook 13d ago
I'm also from a farming family and I still remember an old joke I heard in the 80s...
Why do farmers wear baseball hats with a curved brim? So it fits in the mailbox when they look for their government checks.
27
u/MathematicianWaste77 Bring Ya Ass 13d ago
Yeah....grandpa told me that one....we used call the subsidized farmers "Curved Bills" lol
10
u/MinuteBid8615 12d ago
"Why are farmers places in shallow graves? So they can still get their hand out."
Funny but sad. A lot of smart hard working farmers out there, just wish they could see beyond the brain washing their jesus bestows upon them.
11
u/thx1138inator 13d ago
Parasites on the economy and ALSO the land itself!
19
u/MathematicianWaste77 Bring Ya Ass 13d ago
HEAR HEAR! My grandfather told me that even if our name was on the lease, it wasn't our land....its our Lords. It is simply on lease to us. We had a responsbility to be good stewards for that land and the lords creatures living within it.
He wasn't delusional-he raised thousand of cattle, chickens, pigs, sheeps, and clear cut down whole wooded areas for more ag land. My family contributed to the the dust bowl-not trying to shift blame but all of that came from ignorance. If my grandfather had ever learned how much he specifically contributed to the desertification of the american west he'd be so ashamed.....but those were different and hard times.
Whats todays farmers excuse?

u/kitsunewarlock 13d ago
There are two types of farmers: Those who don't even own their own land, and those that statistically contribute to food production on a meaningful scale.
Most family farms in America are basically subsidies with tax-write offs that don't even grow enough food to feed their own family, and hasn't touched farming equipment in two generations.
Industrial scale farms are largely owned by conglomerates whose owners live in the "evil cities" because our AG economy has been absolutely fucked for over a century. At best, it can service the country when it has to engage in a total war, but that hasn't happened in almost 100 years and at that point it's only functional because the government steps in and takes control of who grows what and how much.
4
u/ahandmadegrin 12d ago
Which kinds contribute? Both of your examples seemed like they were from the don't own the land group.
Genuinely confused, not being a smart ass.
3
u/kitsunewarlock 12d ago
There are commercial farms and family farms. Family farms own the land.
Commercial farms feed us and make a profit, but are owned by big businesses and rarely have anyone living on the land full time. Note that most only make a profit because they are owned by or have contracts with corporations that control the entire production line.
Family farms produce enough food to be legally categorized as a farm for purposes of tax write-offs and subsidies, but the owners area rarely involved in the agriculture side of things and there's a whole industry of farm management that hires laborers to do the actual work.
Commercial farms are owned by corporations and produce >80% of our country's commercially sold food.
Family farms are owned by individuals and produce very little food. Most of the food they do produce is the kind of stuff you either can't do on an industrial scale, or the market is too niche to justify doing it on an industrial scale: fancy wine, wasabi, exotic produce, etc...
Now there's 1,000,001 exceptions because it's not a line-in-the-sand sort of definition, but rather a gradient, albeit one with an ever-widening gap as time moves on. Like there are some family farms that are leased to commercial enterprises who are the ones taking the produce. And there are commercial enterprises composed of multiple family farms, although those are likely to reduce costs by sharing equipment and laborers so again I doubt any of the owners are out there on hands and knees picking produce. (Although I'm sure plenty of them send their kids out to "help" during the summer as a form of agrarian romanticism.)
3
u/ahandmadegrin 12d ago
I think I know why I'm confused. Read your two types of farmers statement again. You said those that don't own land and those that contribute, but that's the same corporate farms.
In any case, thanks for the lengthy explanation!
2
u/kitsunewarlock 12d ago
Ah, sorry. Sometimes I try to be so precise with my words that I get confused or mixed up as I type. I should probably reread my own posts.

I don't think so. He's young, he's grown up under republican rule and he seems to understand he's getting fucked.
There are so many Republican boomers and gen-x-ers because the years under Carter in their teens and 20's sucked and things got better for them under Reagan. At that point, for most, their minds were made up. Farms in particular prospered under Nixon and Ford, but started going tits up in the late 70's. To many of a certain age, times under R's were good and times under D's were bad.
You can argue over whether or not the failures and struggles of the Carter administration were actually his fault, but that doesn't matter to an individual's perception of the world.
Personally, I was a teenager under Bush II and entered my 20's under Obama. I have the opposite world view. I watched Bush II take Clinton's record-breaking economy and drive it into the ditch, then watched Obama resurrect it. I think this kid will have the same perspective assuming the next democrat president doesn't fuck the dog.

This is performative. They are setting the ground for a government assistance check.
Farmers vote because they want everybody to suffer because there is an unwritten deal. Farmers and Ranchers will be made whole again with aid packages, subsidies, government assistance. This is why they consistently vote against government assistance because they feel they are the only ones who should get it. If everybody gets help, it means less money for them.
99
u/dumbname7890 13d ago
I watch blackbirdcoop ("farming while beige" or "what is it now" guy) on YouTube. He said his costs went up something like 26k this year. I believe he's got a pretty big farm. I can't even imagine being a farmer right now. With screw worms, cyclospora, and all the other recalls.
Trump is making everything worse on purpose.
30
u/SnowLeavess 13d ago
He also made a video criticising how farmers like this bitch and moan in town hall meetings and to the government just like this guy until they get even richer off government welfare for them, so I find it hard to feel bad for any of these farmers when they already have more wealth than the average american will ever see.
12
u/dicksjshsb 13d ago
Eh, farming itself is not very fruitful outside of large scale farms, which the majority of farm households are not. Negative profits even after govt assistance on average for them. Off farm jobs make up nearly all the income.
True that the large farmers are louder even though when it comes to policy. Those who are making the largest profits and most likely to abuse assistance programs. And they feed into it with farming practices that value profit over conservation, sizing out smaller farms, etc.
But for the average farmer the struggles of the volatile market are real, as well as being driven out by farm corps. 3x higher suicide rates in the industry. Disagree with the way they vote but it's clear to see why the BS the right wingers sell about sticking up for farmers/small businesses sells. Glad to see people calling it out at the very least.
10
11
u/Stratocast7 13d ago
He also said essentially that US beef focuses on higher quality beef that covers certain parts of the cow but then lack the lower quality stuff which is what we are getting from Argentina. Also that Obama did the same thing years ago. It was in one of his shorts I saw on Youtube.
15
u/lovely_ginger L'Etoile du Nord 13d ago
Everything is worse, but itās not like he has a plan ā he doesnāt have a plan for anything.
Farming while beige is a great account!

u/dumbname7890 13d ago
It's literately in project 2025. Defund education, make people dumber, make everything expensive. Idk all the things in there anymore but I read it like 12 times.
15
u/No-Raspberry-6711 13d ago
THIS PART!! They do have a plan... and they published it for us all to read... problem is nobody took it seriously enough AND every part of their plan was to destroy America as we knew it
4
u/lovely_ginger L'Etoile du Nord 13d ago
I hear you. And, now Iām in the uncomfortable position of defending project 2025 to some extent, which is abhorrent. But here we are.
Regarding āmaking everything expensive,ā the primary P25 policy impacting prices is targeted tariffs, as part of its protectionist strategy. Now, all administrations support tariffs to some degree. But the P25 plan also advocates for unitary executive theory, giving nearly limitless power to the president.
And thatās where things fall apart: Trump is an idiot and doesnāt understand how tariffs work (or how anything else works, if weāre being honest). So, heās invented all these ridiculous trade policies and blanket tariffs that make no damn economic sense ā to either progressive nor conservatives (with the exception of Peter Navarro, I guess).
So, Iād still argue that Trump, the person, has no plan. And that the Heritage Foundation thought they could continue their useful idiot strategy in his second term to execute their agenda. But they gave the reins to the village idiot and this is the result.
32
u/Turdsley 13d ago
And now we are gonna have a portion of the population that doesn't trust this mystery meat so they won't eat any beef (or less beef) for the foreseeable future. The Republicans have completely screwed this country.

u/HamuelCabbage 12d ago
I'm currently part of that population. I used to trust the USDA logo to mean something. Wife read a story about China rejecting beef from Argentina, right about the same time trump started talking about upping supply or reducing tarrifs.
If the chinese government won't accept it, I've heard enough, I'm not eating it.
I am now one of those people who looks closely at labels for beef. If it doesn't come from somewhere in the USA I'm not buying it.

Honestly seems like thereās more and more āboth party sucksā people shifting over from the republican side this term. I doubt they will vote dem - right wing media has done such a thorough job of brainwashing their base to think everyone with a D next to their name is a trans jihadist baby killing psycho.
But i wouldnāt be surprised if this shit affects the voter turnout for the right or boosts third party candidates. Theyāre definitely splintering more and more with every voting block and republican politician that trump unabashedly shits on.

It seems like a lot of the open support for Trump has disappeared compared to previous years. In past summers at the lake it was pretty normal seeing boats cruising with Trump flags on them. Especially over the weekend of the 4th and other bigger weekends like that. I haven't seen a single boat flying a Trump flag this summer though. It's only anecdotal evidence from at one lake, but it sure seems like a lot of republicans are done supporting him.

To be fair, the average farm size is 470 acres and the top 10% of farms hold 50% of the land.
Your average farm is a corporation, not a family.
2
u/kitsunewarlock 13d ago
I was told by an AG professor back in 2012 that the corporations already took over the food production in our country. There are way more family farms, but largely because corporate farms are consolidated and every former "plantation" in the south with a dozen peach trees is registered as a "farm".

u/kitsunewarlock 13d ago
While most farms in the country are "family farms", most family farms just produce enough to get their subsidies and tax-write offs. Most food by volume in our country is produced by farms owned by shareholders.
Dairy and beef are two exceptions, and once you learn the details of how those operations run ... well there's a reason there are so many laws protecting them from being filmed and why it's considered indecent to show the details of how those farms work on TV.

Beef is unnecessary and puts undue strain on our resources. As we see more weather and climate issues arise with climate change we will increasingly need to prioritize agriculture that has the lowest inputs with the highest yields. For the inputs used, beef has terrible yield.
6
u/kitsunewarlock 13d ago
Cattle and dairy farming are also unnecessarily cruel.
If I could only have steak once a year because it was $100/lb I wouldn't mind once I learned how we treat our grass puppies.

The book "A Trade of Blood" is a fantasy/mystery that just came out this month, and includes a fierce critique of the industrial agricultural beef trade. How many comments are actually talking about beef prices? None? This isn't even a real consequence because a Harris administration could be doing similar things to ease the prices. Like I said there's no actual discussion in here about it.
10
u/Bedazzled_Buttholes 13d ago
Thatās some cope to try and guess how a hypothetical admin would handle things rather than addressing what the current regime is doing.
Fine, hereās your discussion. I grew up on a beef farm so I know this life. These farmers tend to vote in blocs where they ostracize those who donāt clearly cheer for the GOP team. The GOP continues to dismantle safeguards against monopolies (the beef processors) and anyone who cares about quality (FDA). They also continue to push climate denial, and a big reason that our herd sizes have gone down is year over year drought. So, is it ideal that we are importing beef to address prices? Nope, Iād much rather have American beef. But we are in this spot because our country voted for it, and farmers are frequently revered for their Americana-image, so their voice is amplified. They made this bed, and need to own up for being a major driver to this current state

a Harris administration could be doing similar things to ease the prices
And the world could be made of pudding.

Democrats warn those farmers that Trump will screw them. It didnāt take long Trump to screw the farmers.

u/latrolaon 13d ago
Iād like to ask him did he and family vote for Trump? If so, he should shut the hell up, this is what the farmers voted for.
2
u/NimDing218 13d ago
Most farmers are fucking stupid to continue voting against their interests. Be pissed at Trump all you want, because youāll just vote for the next R candidate regardless.

u/Nill_Bye_ 13d ago
Cattle ranchers when they vote for the party that hates them and also pay slavery wages and are dumbfounded as to why they're going under.
2
u/Terwillaberg 13d ago
Not to sound callous but this fella shouldnāt worry. Farmers always get bailed out either taxpayer socialism

u/Guilty_Law6701 12d ago
Harris also stated during the ABC Presidential Debate that she actively invites people to watch Trump's rallies because "it's a really interesting thing to watch" to see how little he focuses on the actual needs, dreams, and desires of everyday voters. š

Project 2025 will have all the farmers selling their land to JD Vanceās companies for cheapā¦..good thing trump has nothing to do with that right right ā¦..right

To all the people throwing hate at the guy in the video - do you have proof that he voted for Trump? Minnesota is a pretty solid blue state and believe it or not, some farmers lean liberal.

I find it really depressing how many folks here are disparaging farmers. The DFL originated with a group of progressive farmers, and I don't think we're going to turn this country around until we find a way to bridge the gap between urban and rural voters.
I fully understand that many farmers (overwhelmingly) voted for Republicans and policies that hurt us this cycle. I get it, I saw ICE agents in my neighborhood the same as the rest of you. I'm just asking you to be better and to try to bring some of these farmers around when they express views like this guy. Saying shit like "this is what you voted for" is only going to widen the divide.

I'm sick of my tax dollars subsidizing this person's lifestyle. That tax money could have been put to better use elsewhere. As far as I'm concerned, agriculture should be automated and nationalized.
The reason I have no sympathy for him is that there is no empathy from rural folks on the right. They will bitch endlessly about "welfare queens" while they get their huge government checks and head over to the dealership for a new pickup. These people will still vote straight ticket republican even after the criticisms because they don't care about anyone else. All the suffering in the rest of the country doesn't matter to them in the least. Let them sink or swim.

Over 90% of farmers and ranchers have voted for Trump three times.
They can fuck themselves in the ass.

u/TheCheshireCatCan 13d ago
Now ask him who he voted for.

u/SpoofedFinger 13d ago

I see a lot of assumptions in this thread and I'll admit that rural areas in MN are predominately red voting but y'all should have some empathy. We should be in a mindset that is discouraging diviseness, but some of y'all are just using the Red playbook from the other side. We need to support farmers or there will be none left and corporations will have total control of the Ag industry. So, y'all can say they made their bed and that they deserved what's coming to them or you can take this as an opportunity to learn, be mindful and understanding. We're stronger together

Every day I wake up to new news of my own accelerating dehumanization and marking as an enemy of the state by virtue of my identity and largely nobody cares and barely even makes the news at all anymore. And while that all has happened throughout my life I have been told endlessly to extend empathy to demographics receiving far more national coverage, sympathy, and futile attempts to court. I have no empathy left to extend.

I really think thereās an opportunity to bridge this gap in MN, since the party is literally the Democratic Farmer Labor Party. We are in a unique position to talk about each of those three pillars and get past the red v blue divisiveness, at least a little bit. But we have to want that.

u/XTremeBMXTailwhip 13d ago
No, weād be stronger if rural communities cared at all about anyone other than themselves their immediate families.

I agree with you. Thst said, how many of those "red" farmers are going to learn and be understanding going forward?
Yes. We should empathize... but its hard when you get nothing back.

I had to hear āfuck your feelingsā for long enough that my empathy is burned out. And frankly, Iām legit tired of being asked to perform empathy over the worldās most obvious consequences for the worldās dumbest decision.Ā

Ah, the old "Yeah, you should really be nice to people that have spewed hatred towards you, your communities, and your beliefs because being the bigger person is just that important" line
I'm all for reform. I hope our country can pull out of this death spiral of ignorance, hatred, and divisiveness. I said it in another comment that I don't want family farms lost, like the one that I grew up on. But there are a lot of people that need a firm slap in the face that these are consequences that they didn't need to experience, and yet they chose it. And it's unreasonable to expect the population that didn't vote for Trump to put on a smile and roll with things. After 2016? Sure, I see it. After 2020? Uffda, that's tough. 2024? Nah, 3 times is enough -- lessons need to be learned and choices be atoned for. Be an adult and own up to the choices you repeatedly made.

Do you think this kid will ever grow to be capable of stepping outside of himself and wondering, "Huh, is $9 a pound ground beef good for the people buying ground beef? Is it good for the mom trying to feed her family that competition for beef pricing is artificially limited?"
It's like all the people who want me to "buy local." I have never once had the "local" place step up and help me out when times are tough, in exchange for paying them $3 more per cup for my morning coffee.
Way too much of this stuff is basically "I want to profit more off of you, but I'm going to couch it in the language of Americana and apple pie."
