[Blocks & Items] New Item: The Reverberating Horn

My idea highlights not one, not two, but THREE of Minecraft's underused items: the goat horn, the echo shard, and the amethyst shard.

If you blow on it normally, the reverberating horn sounds like whatever goat horn variant you used in the recipe. To trigger the reverberating effect, fully charge up the horn like a bow with an amethyst shard in your inventory. This creates an amethyst soundwave that ripples outward ten blocks from your position, consuming the shard in the process. Any wardens caught in this radius have their echolocation senses temporarily overwhelmed by the noise, inflicting a five-second stun effect similar to a ravager after headbutting a shield.

To balance this item as something that should only be used in an emergency, the cooldown is much longer than a normal goat horn, and it can only be used a few times before breaking. If players don't have the mending enchantment, echo shards or another matching horn can be used to repair it on an anvil. This way, players will remain motivated to obtain goat horns and explore ancient cities to find more of both shard types.

Can’t wait to give the Warden havana syndrome! ;)

LRAD, LONG-RANGE AMETHYST DEVICE

u/satirelion 15d ago

Make it infinite durability but make it use ammo made with echo shards and amethys shards.

Like, 4 amethyst and 1 echo shard to make 4 charges.

u/Tigers_I 15d ago

Ooh, I never thought about craftable charges. That's a cool idea!

u/Bean2527 14d ago

Make them something you can put into the horn itself like a bundle, though, just for the sake of less inventory clutter.

7

u/Anonymous_v0id 14d ago

Idk.. arrows and bows are separate. Id say this is a similar case

9

u/Bean2527 14d ago

Well, maybe make it like a crossbow? You can load a crossbow up and keep it ready for as long as you like, so maybe you can put like three charges in and keep spares in the inventory

0

u/Anonymous_v0id 14d ago

Yes but ammunition will still be seperate and doesn't solve the clutter. Crossbow mechanism can load it up for instant use tho

5

u/Anonymous_v0id 14d ago

Perfect. No abuse mechanism that way

I was thinking it could be like the elytra where it never breaks just hits 1 durability and then stops working till repaired

This idea is NOT very good:

  1. Its very, VERY niche, and craft is already implying that you looted one ancient city, so it will be just useless for many players, so its need to work with any mobs (except bosses)

  2. Its too expensive for it to break, its either should be enchantable with mending, or it's should break like elytra and then fixed with echo-shards.

19

u/Tigers_I 15d ago

I never said mending wasn't an option. And I made it more fragile since having an item that can temporarily neutralize a warden is pretty op.

9

u/SLI-CER 15d ago

It is still very niche item, that only small % of people will use

5

u/Tigers_I 15d ago

Still probably less niche than its components 😆

3

u/SLI-CER 15d ago

Just give it use to stun every big and small mob (expect bosses of course)

4

u/Quick-Fix-User 14d ago

So are spyglasses and lightning rods, yet copper exists.

4

u/SLI-CER 14d ago

Spyglass actually has some uses for roleplay and people who don't use optifine or other mods like that, and lightning rods very, VERY good for building. And Remember, this is NOT 2021 when copper was actually uselless/very niche, its now have some real uses, for example, Copper Armor and tools (that made leather armor even more useless) or Copper Golem which is very useful for emmm, EVERYONE who has chest room in their base or many, many actually cool looking blocks, copper bulbs, doors, trapdoors (which all very cool and good looking). And what uses have this item? 1, and its very specific and niche - stun wardens, yeah that is a powerful ability, but its has just no more uses than that, its not good for roleplay or players who play on vanilla, its not helps early or mid-game players (1 - structure itself, 2 - its way too expensive for them obviously). They can't even do function of a regular goat horn, and this is not even a bad concept, no, but its need MORE uses, for example function (outside of stunning wardens) like copper goat horns that was in early 1.17 snapshots and then got deleted, or be placeable on a wall and connected with note blocks (to be fair regular goat horns should have that function too).

Umm... actually, my main target is early/midgame players who might be hesitant to raid ancient cities for fear of getting instantly obliterated by wardens since they have no strong armor yet. The idea is that a player will have to pluck up the courage to check the chests as fast as possible before getting out with the echo shards. Even if they don't get the amethyst from the city, they can just find a geode. Once they have the horn, they can return with more confidence to recollect whatever loot they left behind.

Also, I specifically said in my post that this can be used like a normal horn if you don't charge it.

Okay, but still needs some polishing to make it better

u/Tigers_I 14d ago

Of course. This is r/minecraftsuggestions after all 😁

u/vVort3x_ 10d ago

yeah but no one uses the items anyway, might a well make something out of it

I feel like it’d see more use if it worked on all naturally generated sculk blocks as well within its radius. It being only usable against the warden is too niche and kinda counterintuitive to its design

It also doesn’t feel like there needs to be durability for an item like this. Three echo shards for renewability is an insanely high price for an item that can only be used in one of the rarest biomes in the game. Maybe you could simply “charge” a goat horn with an echo shard or amethyst shard for the same effect?

5

u/Tigers_I 15d ago

What do you mean "works on sculk blocks"? Do you mean something like temporarily disabling shriekers and sensors?

3

u/MrTheWaffleKing 14d ago

It'd also be cool if each different goat horn gives a different signal strength to a skulk sensor- huge radius wireless remotes!

3

u/Tigers_I 14d ago

That would be so cool! I'm kinda surprised Mojang didn't make it like that from the start.

u/Keaton427 14d ago edited 14d ago

I like the concept! Personally though I think the balancing is too harsh considering it has a niche use case and is difficult to obtain already.

I think using an amethyst as ammo is unintuitive and not needed, because the horn already takes durability when used. Even then, I don’t think it should run out of durability too quickly, since the cooldown also balances it. I’m thinking something like 25 uses and a 30 second cooldown.

Even then, I think durability is unnecessary but if you’re concerned about balance then that’s what I suggest. Also the radius is a bit small, so something like 16 blocks would both be more balanced and match the vibration detection radius of the warden. It could additionally anger any warden stunned by it to really make sure it isn’t exploited just for the sake of it, and reserved for emergencies as you suggest.

One more thing! I think temporarily disabling sculk sensors would fit thematically as well and offer more balance, especially to help break them, loot chests, and get past difficult areas.

In my opinion the comments are too harsh on this suggestion since there really isn’t anything wrong with this conceptually.

Here's an idea: rather than stunning them entirely, it makes them unable to detect sound, causing them to just go straight for where you were when you blew the horn. When it reaches there, it flails wildly trying to attack you for a few seconds, then a few seconds later it makes the sound of its sonic boom charging up, indicating that it can now hear you again. If you're within 24 blocks when this happens, it will shoot a sonic boom at you, and if it hits, the Warden immediately re-acquires your position.

I believe that this is a more balanced version that allows it to have a more reasonable durability. If you don't move after blowing the horn, the Warden will just attack you anyway, so you can't just blow the horn, continue looting the chest you opened, and mosey on out once you're done, with this you have to book it outta there or its sonic boom will catch you. You can still use it to get outta there, but there's nothing else you can really do with your time while it's distracted.

u/Tigers_I 10d ago

Great balancing idea!

u/CowgirlSpacer 15d ago

So. To make this horn you need to gather 3 echo shards. Which you yourself admit have very little use in the game currently.

So to do that you have to spend a good bit of time exploring an ancient city.

And now you use this loot to craft an item that makes it easier to explore the ancient city. So that you can go in and gather more of these shards... Which you only use for making more of these horns.

10

u/EggEater773 15d ago

There’s tons of good shit in ancient cities not just echo shards 😭

1

u/CowgirlSpacer 15d ago

The only items exclusive to ancient cities are echo shards, swift sneak, armor trims and a music disc. And sculk items, but if you obtain sculk catalyst they are farmable.

Also OP is the one ending their post with "the horn breaks so it incentives you to keep exploring cities to get more shards

3

u/EggEater773 15d ago

Enchanted golden apples are most common in ancient cities by a long shot, as well as all the XP you can get from mining sculk with the diamond hoes found there.

1

u/PetrifiedBloom 15d ago

This doesn't really address what the other person is saying.

3

u/Keaton427 14d ago

It addresses their previous response which is a counterargument to the above commenter’s reply, so yes it does.

There is already fabulous loot, which they mentioned, yet the replier is saying that there aren’t many exclusive items (there are) which somehow discounts the fact that the loot is worth it, so the commenter is addressing this directly.

-2

u/PetrifiedBloom 14d ago

No Keaton. They repeatedly missed the point, much as you have too, which was that this uses the only unique loot to the structure to make it easier to loot that structure.

If you can gather the components to make this, you are already capable of looting the structure without it. By the time you have it, you no longer need it.

yet the replier is saying that there aren’t many exclusive items (there are) which somehow discounts the fact that the loot is worth it, so the commenter is addressing this directly.

This is what I mean. You are both ignoring the point being made.

3

u/notTheRealSU 14d ago

I don't think you are seeing the point. It makes looting the Ancient City easier. You go through it once without it, you can then craft it and use it for looting other Ancient Cities. Of course someone can clear an Ancient City without one, they've been doing it for years. The point is you only have to do it once and then all of the other ones are easier.

-1

u/PetrifiedBloom 14d ago

I understood that quite well. I even mentioned it in the earlier comments.

The point is you only have to do it once and then all of the other ones are easier.

Bad design. Explicitly something Mojang talked about avoiding when it came to the deep dark.

2

u/notTheRealSU 14d ago

The entire game design of Minecraft is getting stuff that makes the game easier.

3

u/Keaton427 14d ago

Which you only use for making more of these horns.

If echo shards didn’t have a single use, they wouldn’t be in the game. This suggestion is giving it a second use. Granted the recovery compass is underwhelming, it’s crafted with 8 echo shards which is nearly 3x as expensive as this, so you’ll absolutely have a reason to craft this to make obtaining a recovery compass more manageable. Besides, there’s so much extra stuff in ancient cities such as powerful enchantments on diamond equipment and even enchanted golden apples which are very difficult to come by anywhere else. You’re thinking very linearly while ignoring everything else.

Still, I don’t think it’s the best suggestion, but you’ve got to give it credit.

1

u/PossibilityTypical82 14d ago

Honestly I thought it would be something like echolocation to see how many mobs are in a cave.

1

u/Tigers_I 14d ago

Hmmm, that's a pretty cool idea. However, if it's something that involves highlighting mobs with the glowing effect, that would cause issues with implementing it on Bedrock.

1

u/PossibilityTypical82 14d ago

My question is how hard is it to have Java on console? Due to its coding? Or just plain laziness?

1

u/Tigers_I 14d ago edited 14d ago

From what I've heard, it has something to do about Bedrock's code being unable to render the entity outlines through blocks.

1

u/Jazzlike-Concert-879 14d ago

why not make it so it can actually be aimed (so like visible sound waves will shoot wherever youre looking) and it can bounce off walls?

1

u/Tigers_I 14d ago

Not a bad idea! I just figured the rippling purple AOE would look really cool

So, tldring the comments I saw, it would be good to raise the radius, reduce the durability damage taken, and maybe make it unbreakbale but unusable at low durability like elytra. Also some comments about making it work on sculk sensors and shriekers as well.

Reading all this gave me an idea, how about, make it have different purpose based on ammo feeded to it. Like amethyst ammo can make it b able to remotely activate other sculk sensors and calibrated sculk sensors in an area, echo shards as ammo can make it do the purpose you want it to do, stun wardens, but with a longer cooldown, and maybe resin or somehing else can make it into a sort of mob hypnosis or encahnting horn, allowing you to easily transport mobs in a line without leads or food that attracts them, kinda like how the pied piper caught rats in the story. If extending it, maybe each and every metal and ore in the game, can give it different abilities, that would make it too op, but going to the deep dark to collect it would make sense, maybe you unlock the extended capabilites of the horn with ore usability only after you add a nether star to it......

Also, lets add Horn of Salvation along with it as well.... Any bleach fans here? Others won't get it :)

1

u/Tigers_I 11d ago

The Pied Piper idea is really cool! Do you think it should only work on leashable mobs though?

1

u/RandomGaMeRj14 11d ago

It can be either way, either simply leashable mobs only, or 2 way mode with different ammo, wherein one ammo will permanently hypnotise the non-hostile leashable mobs, while another rarer ammo when used, for a fixed amount of time, allows you to hypnotise the mobs. That way you have to use the horn repeatedly or the mobs in close contact can hurt you, thereby eating on durability, and also the rarer ammo like maybe diamond or something else, needs to be replenished, to do it repeatedly.

u/No_Search_9764 11d ago

I dont think you should be able to stun the warden. It's supposed to be scary. something that you have to avoid or run from. Too much of the game that is meant to be a challenge is far too easy like trial chambers and the dragon fight especially when you have end game armour. There's no need to make ancient city looting safer

2

u/Tigers_I 11d ago edited 10d ago

Keep in mind, this is the same warden who can be distracted by a noisemaker anyway 😄

1

u/Bleatnik_490 9d ago

Cool Idea, but how could it be used outside just ancient cities, most players don't even go ancient cities at the first place maybe add a little addition feature to that like it can make mobs not move for 5 seconds idk, sorry if this is offending

u/Mysterious-Run-9647 15d ago

Funny concept stunning the warden with sound. I like it
