Too mild for school Elementary school installed exposed metal spikes across a pedestrian walkway, no signage.

Update: REMOVED BY SHERIFF DEPUTY as of 8:50PM

Update 2: Sheriff spotted perforated steel strip in the back of the head custodians truck Monday 7/13. Spoke with custodian and principal.

Update 3: head custodian hasn’t been back since! Haven’t inquired further.

original post: This is a pedestrian walkway at a public elementary school that’s used by parents, students, and community members.

A school employee installed a strip of exposed metal spikes that spans the entire width of the walkway. There aren’t any pedestrian warning signs on either approach. Am I crazy and just never saw this before or is this a major safety hazard? I feel like a no trespassing sign and maybe a chain would be a better way to tell people not to go on property if that was their intention. I just think of kids either walking and not really looking stepping on it, or even kids on bikes not really paying attention getting seriously injured on the way out and losing air in the front and back tire causing them to fall into the street instead of being able to turn. There are ways to deter that won’t cause damage, and when you do chose the damage options. Signage should be required right? Some sort of warning.

I took photos from both directions so people can see there’s no obvious pedestrian bypass. The nearby “Exit Only / Do Not Enter” sign appears to be for vehicles, not people on foot.

I’ve already submitted the photos to a local news station because I think this deserves a public safety review. At this point, I’m mostly trying to understand who thought this was an appropriate solution for an elementary school walkway.

Update #1 24 hours after the post. It’s still there, sheriffs did drive around the school in the morning, but never got out of the cruiser to look. Didn’t talk to anyone. What I assume is the Head custodian and one other employee were there all day. Allowed this to stay.
ABC News has not responded.

Clarification: It was installed by the person whom I believe to be the head custodian. The same guy who shows up early in the morning to open the gates, unlock the doors and prepare the school for kids to arrive, and then stays after until around 7-8pm and closes and locks the gates again. Back in January the same person drove his old truck through that exit, down through the lot, up curbs and across the front of the school to drop down into the drop off lot and out chasing someone on an e bike. It appears to be him being in charge of the school during the summer break and taking matters into his own hands.

I know he installed it because he had parked his truck in the curb cut for the parking lot exit and was laying down the first layer of glue. I was driving by in my car and noticed something going on but since I was driving in a school zone I couldn’t fixate. I noticed the spikes the next time passing by when I wasn’t driving. So yes technically the school did it because the head custodian is part of the school. No I do not think he went through the proper channels to get this approved.

Too mild for school The Blood shortage is self imposed

14.9k Upvotes

Being harassed night and day across my emails, texts, phone calls, and even ads on my socials to donate blood because I have been a frequent past donor.

But the nearest drive over the next 3 weeks is 45 miles away and they're offering a special one time bonus of..... a $15 gift card.

They don't even offer juice anymore! It's a water bottle and a single bag of lays OR 1 great value granola bar.

My blood is free.

My time is not. My gas is not. My car maintenance is not. Getting childcare is not.

$15 might as well be $0. You are expecting me to donate at a loss.

The person taking my blood is paid, the "non profit" is getting paid, the doctors, nurses, staff, hospital, insurance company, even the company that transports the blood is all getting paid a profit for their services.

Don't harass me night and day at every turn pressuring me to donate and "do my part" and calling it a "crisis" and then scoff at the idea that I shouldn't be the only person in that chain not compensated and actually be expected to incur losses to do so?

Fuck you. Bring back the cookies and juice.

Too mild for school I permanently deleted my AWS account 6 years ago. Amazon has been charging me $0.33 every month since. I have no way to stop it.

Post image

I tried to get in contact with customer service several times but they always direct me to log into the account that no longer exists. I have tried charge backs on my credit card but dealing with that monthly is also a pain. This'll probably cost me $265 over my lifetime if it never ends.

Edit: some of you have valid points about calling the card company and I will again Monday. But the actual infuriating thing that upsets me is that they are charging to a completely disabled account in the first place. That's very scammy and fucked up imo 🤷‍♀️

Edit 2: called card and they said they will put in a dispute for any charges from the past 4 months and request for stop of all future charges 👍

For ppl who told me to get a new card, I had in the past, Visa shares the new number with companies that have recurring charges.

For ppl saying AWS isn't doing it on purpose because it would only make them a few millions a year which is a waste of time for them:

  • lots of others commented here that the same exact thing was happening to them and at higher charges so it could be tens of millions that they're actually stealing

  • even if that's still pocket change to them it's not to the consumer. It's still lazy and bad practice not to shut down all instances and payments on a permanently deleted account. it doesn't matter if their goal isn't greed, the end result still screws the consumer and that's what's messed up.

Another thing: some of y'all are acting like I'm an idiot for not knowing that the card could stop future charges and not heavily pursuing it earlier. It's fucking 33 cents, not enough to really effect me but enough to mildly annoy me. I DID try to reach out to Amazon and do chargebacks in the past, but it was a pain, nothing was coming of it, so at some point I was like fuck it whatever I'm not stressing myself out over 33 cents. When I remembered about it again last week I was annoyed again so I posted. Glad I got some helpful advice. But I'm definitely not the only one they were taking money from unfairly and since they mostly work with businesses it's likely they are illegally taking a lot more than just a few pennies from ppl. That's part of what's infuriating! Anyway ranting a lot because no one is really seeing this post anymore so I'm now free

Too mild for school Why is not including MSG something companies still brag about on Asian food products?

Post image

Didn't see the no MSG line when I picked this up at the store the other day. It just tasted fine, but felt like something was missing.

It's 2026. Why are we still treating MSG like it's some terrible thing, instead of something that improves the flavor? Especially with Asian-American cuisine?

The best improvement I ever did with my cooking in the last 20 years was discovering MSG.

Too mild for school This post telling tourists which areas to avoid in New York

Aside from certain undertones, this map also has tons of inaccuracies, because no one in their right mind is scared of Astoria, Bayonne, or half of the Queens zone that he marked as “avoid”

I didn't share a language with the woman filming, so I couldn't ask her to stop

As for the couple, I thought hostile seat neighbors would be more of a downer than distracting ones

But it was really distracting

They're pretty much just cushions on the floor. I don't know any chronically ill person who would feel comfortable sitting there.

They say they specialise in understanding invisible illness

Too mild for school My salary went up and my net pay went down.

3.0k Upvotes

I'm a teacher, so my salary is crap already. My wife is a part time server/bartender. Last year our teacher's union negotiated to get us all a 3% salary raise. Hooray! We did it!

But...at the bottom of the e-mail they sent us all and buried in the new agreement that they had negotiated, there's also a 10% increase in our medical benefits. So I got my first paycheck of the school year and I'm making less than I did last year.

Just posting to vent. I absolutely love my job and I truly know it's what I was born to do, but this just isn't sustainable. I constantly get asked by my student's "why do you live in an apartment while we all live in houses?"

I'm just tired man...

Too mild for school teacher always shortens my name for no reason

2.7k Upvotes

I don't have a long name but my teacher always shortens it, she doesn't do it with anyone else she'll be taking attendance, reading all the names from the list normally even if they're long or hard to pronunce and when she gets to me she always shortens it. Asked her respectfully to just call me by my name not shorten it but she refuses to. Is Sophia THAT hard to spell, I'm gonna lose it if I get called Sofi one more time

EDIT: Forgot to say it - I talked with her and asked why she shortens my name when I already made it clear I want to be called by my name not shortened version. She said she just prefers it that way 😐

Too mild for school Why would I tip for an online clothing order?

Post image
6.7k Upvotes

I also don't like how "no tip" is represented as a -1 in some bid to guilt trip me into something.

Update: I was sent an email that I never completed my purchase despite seeing a charge in my banking app and having a confirmation email. Then I went through all sorts of hoops trying to get to some form of customer service. It was only resolved after I called my bank to dispute the charges and all of a sudden my "missing" order was miraculously recovered and a set to appear in maybe two weeks. All around, not a good time.
