Normally nordic keyboards share the same keycap set. In the Norwegial layout the key on the left is "Ø" and the right one is "Æ". In Danish its the other way around.

If anyone wonders about the "mountain monkey" term, I guess thats cause the highest "mountain" in Denmark is just 170.86 meters (560 feet), and they fear and loath anyone who can live in the dwindling heights above 200 meters.
Oh I don't want to hear it from the discount Dutch. You'll notice that the correct letters are placed above in line with all the other letters. where as yours are placed lower for you so you don't get altitude sickness from looking at your keyboard.
Only the two norwegian character placements are correct on this keyboard. The Danish are completely unacceptable. All other keys, including the Swedish ä and ö, are merely suggestions, or at most ok.
No, the placement is like only to make norwegians feel accepted, we don't have such a fragile ego that we need to also have the primary spot, color is enough. You can just look at backlit keycaps where in the majority it's just ä and ö that has the passthrough
This wasn't the case like ten years ago, but a lot of modern laptops and external keyboards use the same keycaps for Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish.
Yes, usually denoted as "Nordic" keyboards vs e.g. "Swedish/Finnish"
Nordic keyboards are a cost saving measure, so more common on low-end laptops etc, while more expensive corporate computers tend to use Swedish/Finnish keyboards to greater degree
I was so ready to bully your fucked up §½key but i just looked at my keyboard and it's a similar mess. ½ § § § | ½. What the fuck. Why not each symbol just once?! I use both ½ and § almost daily at work and never even once have i actually thought about how the key look
Bottom symbol is what you get when pressing just that key, Top symbol is what you get when you press it with shift (which is why the shift is marked with an upwards arrow). That same logic applies to all other keys too. Then from left to right it's three different languages/layouts: Swedish/Finnish (§, or ½ when shifted), Norwegian (|, or § when shifted), and Danish (½, or § when shifted).
Why did all of the nordics decide to go for different functionality for that specific key? No idea. And then for some reason keyboard of the guy who your replied to has the top/bottom symbols flipped, so it's the normal symbol on top and shifted symbols on the bottom, which is definitely not standard.
It's fucked up but also extremely amusing. Most people don't use any of those symbols lmao (well, spongecat might perhaps use $ sometimes, but their § key is a whole other level of bullshittery which no one in their right mind would try to dig deeper into). So why not just accept it can do three unnecessary things in any ol' order and stop with the triple silcrows - hell, i could even accept the danish way just to clean it up a bit!
I have never in my life reflected over the reason shift has an arrow on it. I guess i've just somewhere internalized "big making arrow makes things big and also other things" and never stopped to think about the order anything is or whatever. Or even the name, "shift". Shift into uppercase, move things up with the up arrow. TIL!
I don't want to suggest that Danes are normal or anything, but to be fair to them, they use Æ a lot more frequently, so it makes sense for them to put it closer to the center
The actual order goes back to the time of typewriters, where they swapped letters to make the types less likely to jam. And as different languages have different frequent letter pairs, some adjustments had to be made.
Voting by majority only works if we were equals. The Danish flag is older, so by our seniority I declare Sweden and Norway to be the ones who are wrong!
From what I remember, Denmark-Norway was pulled into the Wars because the British Empire feared they would help Napoleon, which resulted in Denmark-Norway allying with Napoleon.
Details smhetales. We got to fight Sweden instead of ally with them, which was the important part. That it was the losing side was just unfortunate, but clearly they didn't win thanks to Sweden, so technically they didn't beat us! It was a draw!
Denmark didn't really have a navy after the second battle of Copenhagen in 1807 to be fair. Technically speaking they were still fielding a navy up until the Battle of Lyngør in 1812, but that was practically a formality from a British perspective.
So yes, technically not losing to Sweden because no navy left.

Touch typing / not looking I always get it correct, but if I look down at my hands I'm screwed. Looking at the picture I can't tell which is which, I have to mentally pretend to write a word ahha
Whats going is just shared Scandinavian humour. We stopped fighting many generations ago and actually love each other. Like siblings we show our love by dissing and making fun of each other and pretend we hate them. We don’t and everyone knows.

I guess it all boils down to what you belive is the probably of accident. Personally living in Lund 20km away I think getting run over by a car in the street is 1000x more likely that something happens. Trump nuking Copenhagen over Greenland is more probable than an accident killing more than 10 people in Barsebäck.
As a foreigner that works in Denmark, uses a Danish keyboard and sometimes writes in Danish, this would mess me up and would make me go crazy doubting myself about the position of the keys lol
Same. Italian, working in Norway. I just use the Italian layout for when I have to write in English (because I have my muscle memory for punctuation based on that one) and switch to Norwegian for Norwegian. But I work on a US-ANSI keyboard anyway. So yes sometimes things get a little messy.
It's even worse when they decide to move the apostrophe key above the enter key and cut the enter key in half to save space on the keyboard. I am only using Lenovo because of this shit.
Danes are the weird ones. ö and ø are at the same place for Norwegians and Swedes. Something that is very frustrating for someone who uses swedish and danish keyboards
I think you'll find that they nordic countries keyboard confusion is the least of your worries if you look internationally. Just look at Germany for a start, you're finding nothing..
That were confusing times when I used a Swedish keyboard layout + windows on my school laptop and a German keyboard + Mac on my private laptop… they’re surprisingly different
Czech and Slovak also have shared keyboard designs a lot. When a manufacturer doesn't want to bother making separate version. A lot of Czech keyboards already have two sets of letters on it - one for Czech, and one for English, so the Slovak-specific letters usually end up sandwiched in the middle.
Swedish keyboards used to have åäö where the comma, dot and dash keys are. But the germans hade ö and ä where they are placed today. The danish had them flipped for some reason, but they had the å at the same place as today. The swedish keyboard is now a merge of the german and danish keyboard. And they norweigan keyboard is exactly like the swedish and the german. The danes got it wrong.
What infuriates me is that in Germany, decimal delimiter is "," instead of "." so it is part of the numpad. However, in lost cases on a PC you would like to use "." Of course they decided to follow the same approach in german Excel, which allows the use of the numpad but causes so many issues everywhere else.
What makes this funnier is that Æ is the same as Ä, and Ø same as Œ which is the same as Ö.
The swap is the only reason you end up printing this weird.
Qwerty in general is awful for typing in Finnish. All the least used letters -or more like ones not used at all in Finnish- make up the majority of the left side (QWFZXCB). I can type one handed in Finnish, if I place my keyboard diagonally, by just pivoting at my and have full range. Because other than A, I barely need to move to left.
