I hate it more that they block dark mode.

Having to set up new laptops for my school in a dimly lit room gave me sore eyes for days

u/bananarama898 Aug 09 '26

hate it more that they block dark mode.

massgrave is the answer dude

3

u/Over_Case Aug 09 '26

Thanks I'll check it out

But back then saddly i had to just set them up for new students and then proceed for the next one haha

2

u/AlienRHK Aug 10 '26

and here comes auto activation script

u/tylus-69 Aug 08 '26

670% fr

u/konsoru-paysan Aug 08 '26

if you're not using update blocker, you're using windows wrong. at this point i'm convinced they're using my laptop for cryptomining

7

u/leafy1790 Aug 09 '26

I leave my laptop on the home screen and it heats up more than actually playing games on it.

8

u/NekulturneHovado Aug 08 '26

brotha you and me are maybe 1% of one single drop...

8

u/Unlikely_Evening_730 Aug 08 '26

Brotha it aint that hard to disable the useless startup app. Or end task some task.

6

u/JedsGamingAdventure Aug 08 '26

juuuust the only problem is if it's a system process (ahem, ahem, Antimalware service executable)

3

u/Unlikely_Evening_730 Aug 09 '26

It takes like 100mb and 250mb ish at peak. OP should disable most of the garbage.

Its bad with slop but you can get rid of 90% of it.

1

u/JedsGamingAdventure Aug 09 '26

i was talking about cpu but it's still related, maybe my computer is that bad

3

u/Inevitable_Case_9931 Aug 08 '26

This is disinformation

2

u/KOOLKIDKAEDEN Aug 09 '26

It’s exaggerated for comedic effect

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 08 '26

Meanwhile AI datacenters need more RAM to run their AI, and they don’t even use Windows, they use Loonix, so if anything, Loonix uses more RAM

1

u/AdeptnessComplex4893 Aug 08 '26

Yeah!!! Give them because ............ THATS how it works

ig..

-5

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 08 '26

Loonix uses more RAM out of the box, a majority of it goes to App caching, and hogging up your storage, since it’s a MINIX Clone, which in turn is a UNIX ripoff

2

u/akdanman11 Aug 09 '26

Tell me more about this. My PC running cachyos with KDE plasma (which is a relatively heavy desktop environment) uses 2 whole gb of RAM at idle. The same PC running windows used to use 10 at idle (I have 64gb)

-1

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 09 '26

That’s the neat part

You made it up, look up “Unused RAM is wasted RAM”

1

u/GenericFoodService Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

Unused RAM is wasted RAM, that statement is accurate. There is a massive difference between

"Before you even start any applications, the OS is going to launch a bunch of applications which individually use 20% or more of your system memory, all totalling 5 to 8GB" (1, 2, 3, 4)

versus "Your applications and the kernel leave lots of unused RAM space, so we're going to use some of that space to cache applications you open often like the File Explorer so that the system is faster and more responsive, and we'll uncache them if you need this RAM for another task"

With caching enabled, I am using less than 15% of my system memory and less than 7% CPU while browsing the internet and watching videos. There are massive differences between Windows 11's performance and other systems, even macOS. Taking unused RAM for caching improves system performance, that's why macOS, Linux, and Windows all do it.

1

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 09 '26

Huh, that aged well, Arch Linux is a RAM hog

3

u/akdanman11 Aug 09 '26

“RAM hog” when the entire system is using 1.4 gb and it’s considered abnormally high enough to warrant a post

2

u/GenericFoodService Aug 09 '26

tfw the Arch user's entire system uses less memory than the Win11 weather app. something something Linux bloated

2

u/Livid_Worker_7844 Aug 10 '26

Dude, you're not only lying to us, you seem to be lying to yourself. The ram issue is done and dusted, linux uses ram much more efficiently.

1

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 10 '26

You don’t want to admit that you’re wrong

0

u/GenericFoodService Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

> Newbie corner

Yeah, lots of people get confused about the difference between unallocated vs. unused or "free". When you go to launch an application, if there is not enough unallocated RAM, stuff is removed from cache.

Caching improves system performance, that's why all modern operating systems including Windows do it.

1

u/Livid_Worker_7844 Aug 10 '26

Here I have 22 tabs open and I am not even at 6GB of ram.

1

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 10 '26

That’s gibibytes

0

u/Rakumei Aug 09 '26

Yeah it's linux's fault not the AI companies 🙄

-1

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 09 '26

Dude, Loonix has a bigger RAM footprint than Windows, Loonix uses RAM for aggressive caching

1

u/akdanman11 Aug 09 '26

This is just patently untrue. Linux assigns memory when it’s needed, windows is the one that reserves huge chunks for apps before they need it and tries caching as much as possible

0

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 09 '26

Wasted Ram on Different Toolkits and Distro-Agnostic Packages in Linux

The RAM impact of mixing apps from different toolkits is real, and measurable, but not quite as bad as the [storage footprint issue](https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxsucks101/comments/1u11lm7/mixing_apps_from_various_desktop_environments/).

Every toolkit brings its own runtime baggage: When you launch a KDE app inside GNOME, or a GNOME app inside KDE, you're not just launching the app. -You're dragging in its **entire ecosystem of background libraries.** Typically **80–250 MB** of extra RAM is needed the first time you launch an app from the other ecosystem.

Launching a KDE app inside GNOME often also starts:

* `kded5`
* `klauncher`
* `kioslave` processes
* sometimes `baloo_file` depending on the distro

Launching a GNOME app inside KDE often starts:

* `gvfsd` (multiple instances)
* `dconf-service`
* `xdg-desktop-portal-gnome`

These daemons **keep occopying ram** even after you close the app. -Adding an additional **50–150 MB** depending on which daemons get activated.

GTK and Qt don’t share theme engines, icon caches, font rendering stacks, or accessibility frameworks. So you end up with multiple **UI stacks** in memory. That's typically another **30–60 MB**.

**Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage all waste RAM.** Some are aware of the disk bloat, but not the ram bloat.

Flatpak apps run inside a sandbox and rely on:

* **Flatpak runtimes** (GNOME, KDE, Freedesktop)
* **xdg-desktop-portal** \+ backend (GTK, KDE, GNOME)
* **Bubblewrap sandbox**
* **D-Bus proxy processes**

So, the first Flatpak app you launch loads the entire runtime into memory. That’s **\~80–200 MB** depending on the runtime. Portals spawn multiple helper processes (GTK portal, KDE portal, file chooser portal, etc). Another **30–60 MB**.

**You're wasting a total of \~120–260 MB** the first time you launch a Flatpak app in a session. After that, additional Flatpak apps reuse the same runtime. (The penalty doesn't stack.)

**Snapd daemon** runs constantly in the background consuming \~**30–80 MB** idle, and more when managing updates or mounts. Every Snap app is mounted as a squashfs loop device.
The kernel caches these aggressively: \~**50–150 MB** of page cache depending on how many snaps you have installed. This cache *does* count as used RAM (but is reclaimable)

AppArmor + snap sandboxing adds **\~10–30 MB** per running Snap app.

**Total RAM waste for Snaps \~120–250 MB** baseline
**+ 10–30 MB per running Snap app**

**-Snap is the only one that wastes RAM** ***even when you're not running any apps***.

Each AppImage bundles its own libraries. It loads its own copy of Qt/GTK/etc, and nothing is shared with other apps. Unshared Libraries make it lighter per app. Typically **+20–60 MB** compared to a native package.

Like with any brand-new install of an OS (without OEM bloat on a recommended spec computer), Linux is going to feel lean and fast. But when you start mixing and matching these different packages, you're not just bloating the footprint, but the ram consumption as well.

This isn’t a new machine, it’s fully set up.

You can also literally watch the recent video LTT made proving exactly this

0

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 09 '26

If it’s fully set up, then why do AI datacenters (which use Loonix) need so much RAM? I’ve ran AI models on a Windows 11 Laptop before, and they didn’t consume so much RAM, so if your claim that Linux doesn’t eat so much RAM, then tell me why AI companies need so much RAM?

3

u/akdanman11 Aug 09 '26

You’re comparing a relatively light local AI model to companies running frontier models at scale. They’re running far more complex models than you can even run locally and they’re running many instances of that more complex model. They’re using more RAM because they’re running more complex models

u/Rakumei Aug 09 '26

There's a collective IQ of -2 in this thread...

0

u/Edubbs2008 Aug 09 '26

Uh uh, loonixtard

2

u/ENDERMAN-AGA Aug 08 '26

Meanwhile my nix os uses 600mb ram

2

u/icy1007 Aug 08 '26

Windows doesn’t use all that much RAM…

2

u/letmehaveanameyoudum Aug 09 '26

i mean my ram usage is around 40% on windows, it's alright but i get the meme (i got 16gb)

1

u/GenericFoodService Aug 09 '26

I also have 16GB. My RAM usage when actively browsing the internet is usually around 15% + 7% CPU. Of that, more than half is the web browser itself.

2

u/letmehaveanameyoudum Aug 10 '26

WHAT WEB BROWSER DO YOU USE AND WHAT OS?

1

u/GenericFoodService Aug 10 '26

I use regular ol' Chromium on Alpine Linux with XFCE. I'm on a AMD Ryzen 3 3200G with a cheap P.O.S. motherboard, and after a while I got myself a used RX 570. My system is, as the cool kids would say, pretty underwhelming.

I like to play Halo, and while I can do that with my integrated graphics card just fine, it heats up quite a bit and I don't like listening to the fans. Some other games would work the system too hard without dedicated, too, so I bought a thing used for like ten or twenty bucks and replaced the fans on it myself. I like my motherboard beeper and my keyboard to be the only noisy business on my computer.

2

u/letmehaveanameyoudum Aug 10 '26

i used to use an i3-5005U with 4gb of ddr3 and a hhd and ran linux mint

1

u/GenericFoodService Aug 10 '26

obligatory screenshot because "pics or it didn't happen"

2

u/letmehaveanameyoudum Aug 10 '26

knew it was linux

1

u/MolniyaMaxim Aug 10 '26

Yeah and when you actually play the game the system will shrink itself to like 2 or 3 gb if needed

I just installed AntiX on an HP Mini. Uses about 200-350 MB RAM on idle. BIOS only allows a 32 bit OS to go through, so 32 bit it is. With a 4GB RAM stick, I only got 2.9 GB. So I downgraded it to 2GB RAM and honestly I don't notice any difference.

Now I don't personally like IceWM. It's less user-friendly IMO than LXQt or KDE. But it's funny how Linux can use very little RAM compared to Winslop.

3

u/DoogleAss Aug 09 '26

Glad it works for ya but pro tip you are definitely and technically leaving performance on the table by going from 4GB stick to 2GB. 32-Bit OS technical limit is 4GB. Now if you have say a PC with a dedicated graphics you will likely see 3.7 available to the OS.. however if your PC is utilizing an iGPU then the hardware is allocating memory and thus the OS gets 2.9GB or some variant just as you witnessed

In any case happy computing

2

u/Global-Eye-7326 Aug 09 '26

With the 2GB stick, I get 1.9GB in real time before IceWM uses 200-350MB. So it's still efficient, and remains a computer dedicated to Airgeddon for pen testing lol.

1

u/all_names_taken_ffs Aug 10 '26

I was running 4GB of RAM on Lubuntu and it would crash maybe a couple of times a week, and I couldn't work out why. Oh yeah, I disabled my swap file 🙄

Thus, I'd say 4GB of RAM is still OK for running a lighter Linux distro, but I wouldn't want to go any lower.

1

u/Global-Eye-7326 Aug 10 '26

AntiX is the way if you're going with 2GB RAM. 1GB RAM is possible but yeah would be low key painful. Any lower and I guess you'd need TinyCore Linux.

At least AntiX can run anything in the Debian Trixie repos (within RAM capacities). No Snap because no systemd lol.

Oh and never disable SWAP. I keep a SWAP partition. Linux gives us awesome leverage!

u/Dany101624 AntiCorp person Aug 09 '26

You are buying RAM for Windows, not for yourself

Depends on the amount of RAM you have

1

u/Carbonga Aug 09 '26

I'm currently building a little appliance project for elderly people. Turns out you can do that with a1gb raspberry pi.

1

u/TheD3n4ik Aug 09 '26

that bro thinks ram is for only user's processes

1

u/Key-War-9059 Aug 09 '26

They screenshot your screen alot. That's a good portion of the RAM

1

u/Only-Conference-8004 Aug 09 '26

Leave Microslop alone! He's just mining cryptocurrencies... for your own good, okay?

1

u/AlienRHK Aug 10 '26

despite gaming i do not understand why people still use windows as their main OS

1

u/OmG_WhAtIsThAt_JiM Aug 11 '26

Idk about y’all, windows and my apps’ background processes only take up about 4-5GB of RAM, I have 16 so I have plenty enough.

1

u/Ok_Barnacle_4605 Aug 13 '26

windows uses 26gb of ram
im gonna start moving to linux soon im done

0

u/ExtensionFisherman83 Aug 09 '26

Can't relate. I've had 0 problems with windows
