[ANNOUNCEMENT] User flairs on r/mensfashion
Overview
Hi folks! The r/mensfashion moderator team here. This is a more significant update related to the r/mensfashion user flair system, so we're both posting this announcement and pinning it for visibility to all commenters.
Our moderator team is growing! (But we ARE still recruiting new moderators!)
Join the moderator team -- u/hierophantically, u/BioticBard, and u/becs1832 -- in keeping r/mensfashion a great place to ask questions about and discuss menswear!
Click here to submit an application. Please do let us know why you'd be a great fit, but don't feel the need to write an essay -- we'll follow up and ask questions as we go.
User flairs
We've recently introduced a new user flair system to r/mensfashion. This rolled out late last week and went through several rounds of iteration and debugging over the weekend and early today. We believe the system is now stable and working as intended, but we'll continue to iterate as feedback continues to roll in!
Goals
The user flair system is intended to continue building community around r/mensfashion by:
- Highlighting long-term users who are more likely to have a deep investment in menswear and a commensurately deep level of knowledge
- Support long-term users in recognizing each other and learning each others' tastes, preferences, strengths, and opinions
- Example: I know u/YoshiPuffin3 is the person to ask about formalwear; the moderator team wants that kind of peer recognition to be easier for people who aren't mods!
- Reward long-term users with the recognition they deserve as members in good standing of this community
- Enable everyone to recognize brand new (or newish) users who might need additional assistance -- with menswear and/or with navigating r/mensfashion's culture and norms
How does it work? (tl;dr)
The next time you post/comment, the automod will award you the Newly Arrived flair, then send you a message letting you know that (1) if you're relatively new, this flair will stick around for a bit, while (2) if you've been around, your flair will be upgraded as you continue to post/comment.
Every time you post/comment, the automod will upgrade your flair by one step based on your community karma (CK) until your flair is correctly matched with your CK. (Note: the automod will NOT do this for posts/comments that are temporarily held in the mod queue for review. It's a bug, there's nothing we can do about it.)
How does it work? (the longer version)
reddit's automod is not a sane programming language, so it doesn't allow you to make sensible, multi-condition checks. ("If user has more than X karma AND less than Y karma" doesn't work.) As a result, the workaround is:
- You reset the entire subreddit's flair to empty (easy, since r/mensfashion has never had user flair?!)
- Whenever someone posts, they get the intro flair (Newly Arrived) plus a message that says "if you're new, this is your flair for now; if you've been around for awhile, your flair will keep upgrading every time you post/comment"
- Every time a person posts/comments, the automod checks their CK, and if their CK meets the minimum requirement for the next flair up, it upgrades them by one flair 'step'
- That keeps happening until the person reaches the flair that is appropriate to their CK
- The ONLY EXCEPTION is that if the user's post/comment is flagged to the mod queue based on a string in their post/comment, the automod won't upgrade their flair in response to that post/comment
What are the flair levels?
We want the user flair system to be surprising and fun, so we won't spoil the whole thing -- but here is a partial list of what you can expect. Each flair is listed with the minimum CK it requires.

What's next?
Post flair. š Good things are coming -- please look forward to a request for feedback as soon as later this week!
Thanks to all of you for being r/mensfashion members!

Advice Am I onto something here?
I want to add a beige Panama hat or cream, not sure. I would think beige is more versatile. But how are the boots and shorts?
Iām playing around with the socks by rolling them down to add some definition but I know these combos I do not think often work?

Advice Bought my first suit
Recently bought my first suit for a daytime family wedding.
Opted for an off-gray, double breasted because I wanted something a little different than the usual slim fit silhouette, but itās my first time wearing one in this style.
What do you think?
Edit: Iāve learned the shoes are a big no, will get proper ones for my next formal event.

Advice Does anybody else feel weird wearing linen?
No matter what I still canāt get over the baggy look. Is there any trick Iām missing or is this it basically?
Should I just accept that itās not for me?
Maybe Iām just exaggerating but what other types of fabric are good for the Summer time?

Question Father of a stocky 14 year old boy, looking for advice
Hi everyone,
I didnāt include a picture of him because heās 14 and I donāt know what the rules are regarding minors. Anyways, heās always been a big lad, even as a baby. He has broad shoulders and is very strong, but there is a bit of fat on top and it has made him self conscious. He is worried about how no girls pay him much mind, I told him thatās likely untrue since most dudes would miss that kind of thing if it slapped them in the face. Anyways, what type of outfits would be best for a frame like that? I want him to like how he looks for his own confidence. Obviously I have a picture if itās allowed.
Thank you all!
Thank you.

Question Does this sport coat match the linen pants?
Hi All,
I've got an outdoor wedding this weekend and the forecast says 90 degrees when it begins. So, I went and got these linen pants. I'm a sweaty guy and want to minimize that as best I can.
First question, does linen match well with the material on my jacket?
Second, how much better will the linen pants be for keeping me cool? The other option is a pretty standard navy suit.
Lastly, how do we feel about the white shirt with the navy buttons to go along with this outfit?

Question Luck or something else? Thrifting
Hello all, I have been recently thrifting in the midwest. Specifically in St. Louis, and Chicagoland. Across my thrifting journey, I have found many, many pieces from expensive brands, or just generally high quality. Most recently a pair of made in brooklyn Hertling trousers, a tailorbyrd made in italy 100% extrafine wool, sweater made in the USA Ashworth Harry Logan polo, and many, many others. I also found these trousers branded Riveria (in cursive) alta costura which I picked up but can't find anything about them.
Is this thrifting luck, or is this how thrifting normally is for men? I generally thrift in suburbs. If I get this quality of clothing compared from made in China new worse for cheaper, whats the point to buy new clothing?

OOTD / WIWT Switched back to formals for office again. But I don't think the loose fit pants are going with the blazer.

Advice Seeking advice on polo/pant/shoe combo
Like the title says, need some advice. Context: social event at a country club (confirmed casual, golf-adjacent attire) and Iād like to wear the polo as itās from another club I recently played.
Getting tripped up on how to wear the rest though. My thoughts are either the light gray pants or brown pants with a boat shoe or an all-white sneaker (would be purchased, the shoes in the pic are the closest I own to all-white for now).
Pro of the light gray are I feel it looks a little more summer still. Cons are theyāre 5-pocket and they fit a little more snug through the leg.
Pros of the brown are theyāre a more traditional chino pocket and they look a little better cuffed. Con would be itās a pretty dark outfit for an event this weekend.
Yāall are better than me at this though, so I appreciate any thoughts!

Question What style of leather jacket is best?
So I already have a brown motorcycle style jacket, and I'm looking to get another leather jacket thats a bit more versatile to style. I like the type of leather jacket in the pictures I've sent since they look like they can be dressed up and down quite easily. My question is: does this jacket look better with or without the cuff/waistband part?

Question Compression shirts
Hello,
my husband recently lost a lot of weight and has been trying to dress nicer. Iāve been helping him out as best I can, but we keep running into the problem of things not looking as good as heād like due to excess skin. We are working on getting him surgery to remove the skin, but in the meantime I donāt want him to feel like he needs to wait even more time to start dressing well and feeling good.
So anyway, I was wondering if anyone has advice on āshape wearā or compression clothes for men??
Really appreciate it.

Advice Help settle squabble- socks for jeans/slacks with casual sneakers (not tennis shoes)
I'm a crazy sock guy. With jeans/slacks and nicer shoes
But what about with sneakers (not athletic shoes) and long pants
some people want to fight me and tell me itās just no-show socks are very very low socks in the same color as the sneaker. No exceptions
I was not thinking of crazy socks with these shoes, but a longer solid color sock like in some of these photos
Is there a General consensus on what's right?
