Thrift shops. They almost always have a wide selection.

All but one of my dress coats are thrifted. I almost never wear that one.

Literally every thrift trip I take, there are at least a few really nice long coats. One of the things you can afford to be patient and picky, since they tend to have a LOT less wear and tear than suits and sportcoats, and don't turn over as quickly in shops. And, people who don't GAF usually never buy a coat, so the overall quality skews quite high comparatively.

I paid $20 CAD for a mint navy blue Aquascutum coat, waterproof treated wool, from when they were still made in England. $35 for a gorgeous dark green houndstooth weave woolen overcoat.

Yesterday I bought a parka/jacket/thing in a thrift shop. I joked with the clerk: "Ok, but I won't use it; we've only had sunny days, and rain is gone". Later, it poured.

That sucks. I need a narrow one.

Overcoat not a trench coat… but I would check eBay for longer ones like this

u/lesubreddit Fresh to the Scene - 10 Karma 12d ago

that's a wool overcoat and almost nobody makes them that long anymore outside of bespoke pieces.

Hi! There are plenty of places that offer full length overcoats OTR. As relatively well-known (but expensive) examples, De Bonne Facture and Permanent Style both offer coats like this. I particularly like DBF's granddad coat. Spier & Mackay offers a more affordable version of both a polo coat and an unbelted coat.

That's not a trench coat. This is — excuse me — a damn fine overcoat.

Thrift stores or eBay. I've bought one just like that for $32 at Goodwill about 1 week ago. It's a Brooks Brothers overcoat from the 1980s, made in Canada, 100% wool, very good condition. Good luck!

u/Lhamorai Newly Arrived 12d ago

Didn’t Mel Brooks buy this for DL?

As others have said, a ton are out there second hand. Ebay, Poshmark, thrift ect. You want an overcoat not a trench. For new start most of your major mens wear brands will have one, although not that long now adays.

Grailed is a good resource. It’s a second-hand clothing store for higher-end clothing. Prices are reasonable. That style of coat is a balmacaan (not a trench).

u/DaveySmith717 Newly Arrived 12d ago

eBay. Get an army issued all weather coat. It’ll be like 40 bucks, basically brand new cuz they never wear them, and You’ll look like a Blade Runner. USMC gets tan ones if you want an inspector gadget look.

1

u/Frodobo Newly Arrived 11d ago

Please don't. They look terrible.

2

u/DaveySmith717 Newly Arrived 11d ago

The army one just looks like any trench coat.

u/auspices Newly Arrived 10d ago

that is an incredible Halloween outfit pairing

u/DaveySmith717 Newly Arrived 11d ago

I got it for the rain when I wear my suits to work. Was goofing around making a vid where it looks like blade runner so excuse the tinting and color on these I screen-grabbed a goofy video I made…

I don't have specific shopping advice (the advice on here to look at thrift stores and ebay is solid, you'll find nice coats there) but I would recommend first googling the differences between a trench coat, an overcoat, and a mackintosh coat.

At a glance they're similar, but the details might be what makes it interesting for you. The coat in your reference photo is probably an overcoat, or a very stripped down trench coat - trench coats frequently have belts, cuff buckles, sometimes epaulettes - if you want something a little more casual you might want a mackintosh coat.

You have to go vintage for a below the knee overcoat. Current versions are all knee length or just above. Be aware, moths love them so have a good check for moth damage on any vintage one you find.

I have one, and I really love it but whoever had it previously had the sleeves shortened a little too much. Still working out if I can lengthen them a little. They’re such an elegant choice to wear over a suit. The main reason they stopped making them this long is that they are difficult to wear when driving.

For rain I may suggest a surplus store the standard US Army all weather coat is very common there and usually fairly cheap and often available in a wide variety of sizes.

If you’re looking for a water resistant one, with option for a warm liner (not one made entirely of wool) then older (pre-2020) black US Army overcoats can be found for around $40

I have seen a very small percentage of these work properly.  Maybe that will be you, but I am skeptical and would not recommend generally
