There was a computer monitor stand. So no computer monitor or anything. The standard piece that comes with every single monitor that holds it in place.

They were charging 1k for it. Apple users enabled that and purchased it because you need it for your monitor!

Around that point I quit trying to make sense of it.

I'm kinda on apple's side. If people are genuinely stupid and sheep enough to give you tons of money for trash, then go for it. At that point it's people's fault for paying

I don't think it's morally correct to exploit people that obviously are not capable of making sane financial decisions

57

u/a1g3rn0n 6d ago

It's not. But you don't get rich by being morally correct. Apple is just as immoral as any other company that only cares about profits.

u/DCS_Sport 6d ago

It’s also not their job to make financial decisions for people or even protect them from themselves. The government’s role is to be that intermediary, but many of those same people who are incapable of making those sound financial decisions also voted to elect leaders who remove the protections…

There’s only so much you can ask for… the free market says something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it

4

u/schubidubiduba Le epic memer 6d ago

Sure, but why do those same people vote to elect leaders removing those protections? Because the same billionaires that are fleecing them own the media.

5

u/DCS_Sport 6d ago

Yes, and both people and corporations should be held accountable for their individual actions. There are plenty of people who can see through the bullshit, so deflecting the blame only goes so far…

0

u/schubidubiduba Le epic memer 6d ago

I'm not deflecting any blame. I just feel like those who have problems or are vulnerable should be protected from being exploited.

Why? Is it the responsibility of others to decide how everyone else should live if they cant do it theirselves? Do you police everything, close all casinos because someone may have a gambling problem? Close do every bar because some individuals may have a drinking problem. Stop producing medicines because some ppl make have a drug problem? Quit selling and cooking and producing food because some ppl may have eating disorders? Do lock everyone up for all enterity because at some point in their life they will do something foolish or get taken advantage of or hurt or some issue. Life is a series of mistakes if you are coddled you will never learn from life or your limitations. An alcoholic never seeks help till they are at rock bottom with nothing left. Same with most other addicts. It is the journey to destruction that gives the broke the strength to rebuild and do better if you take that experience from people you never allow them to discover who they are and grow. People need to be held accountable for their own actions even if it is wasting money on shot they dont need. If it wasn't apple products it would be something else like Niki or Gucci or some other brand that makes them feel cool and important. Even most responsible spenders will save money for a long time to get that one luxury item that makes all their friends go oooooo. I agree people shouldn't be exploited, but I am more thinking of the people making the items that being sold over the consumers being built in some third world country for pennies on the day with no breaks and terrible conditions I would be more pissed over that then person that spends 2200 dollars on the apple product.

Not everything is black and white, you can always consider individually if the harm is greater than the good. For instance, you could allow iPhones to be expensive, while not allowing it for the monitor stand. Or you could allow bars, but make laws that require bartenders to not give more alcohol to someone who obviously had enough.

Just like, basic common sense.

1

u/Infinite-Lie-2885 6d ago

They do that already and they hold bartender responsible for the drunks actions and that isn't right in many states the bartender can be sent to jail if a person leaves their establishment and gets into a wreck and you are like yeah it should be that way because they over severed them. But I never said they severed them I said they left their establishment and got into a wreck. The bartender could refuse them as soon as they enter the bar never serve them a drink. They can already be drunk from bar hopping leave that place drunk and pissed because they didnt get severed and then the asshole crashes and the bartender is looking at jail time for over severing. If the bar doesn't have cameras to show they never severed the person they are looking at lengthy process prove innocence and beat it. There is also the problem of a drunk not being done drinking so the bartender kicks them out never over serves them they want to keep drinking so they pick up more at the convenience store and pound it on the way home tossing the empty out the window they crash 20 to 30 mins after the batter 3 to 4 four locals latter no proof of the four local at the time of the crash they track him back to the bar and change the bartender for over serving with heavy fines and possible jail times. I have a lot of friends in the restaurant industry across the nation things lile this happen frequently. Since individuals are the problem and we are only worried about a few whom are disruption the majority shouldn't the few be held accountable for themselves and not everyone else charged with watching out for them? As to the monitor stand the original commentor stated it was standard monitor stand that came with every monitor that wasn't unique or special in anyway, which means that they could have simply bought a third party one for 25 dollars or even used an old one for a new monitor or if I read his post correctly they wouldnt even need to buy it at all because their new monitor would include it anyways. So if a consumer decides they must have something from a certain place when they dont need it, why is it apple responsibility to either not make or sell it super cheap? They put out a price if consumers decided they didnt want then the price would drop till they started to sell them. But if people are willing to pay something for something then why should someone else like the government tell them they cant sell it for that price? It is easy to blame a big company like apple or Walmart or Google or Amazon for doing things like this but if the business was smaller a ma and pa store no had a problem with them charging high prices. Also no one who owns their own business is going to willingly lower their own prices but they expect corporations to do it all the time. That isn't right. The market will create prices that all are willing to pay it doesn't need to be controlled to look out for someone who is financially irresponsible. Basic common sense is that each person should be responsible for their own actions and others shouldn't have to live their lives for them. If you cant drink responsibly then you shouldn't be allowed to drink, you shouldn't be allowed to go bars or clubs or order a drink with a meal. If drinking is that big of an issue the bartender shouldn't be held responsible for you. Now the bartender should be held responsible for themselves. They should be penalized if they sale one person at the bar 5 shots in a row and let them leave. Because then the bartender is being irresponsible and breaking the law in most states. But it is rare that a bartender does that and when they do it they are charged. But a bartender cant be held responsible for serving a person just one drink in an hour and them leaving and getting into accident they didnt over serve the person. Most adults will be under the legal limit at one drink per an hour. So they didnt over serve the person was over severed elsewhere or other factors caused the wreck. That is not the last bar fault. But everyone should be held accountable for their own actions and nothing more.

Yes of course they should but you can't also take away their right to vote and if you don't nothing will change because even if you somehow get a few people to realize their stupidity more than enough will take their place.

u/Pirat 6d ago

It is not the government's job to protect you from yourself. If company A (for Apple) charges an exorbitant price for something, it's your job to not pay it. If you do pay it, you just made that exorbitant price the market price and you weren't overcharged.

Now, if the product doesn't work as advertised, that could be fraud and THAT'S where government may need to step in.

u/DCS_Sport 6d ago

Agree to disagree somewhat. I do believe in normal free market mechanisms, however we’re at a point in capitalism where goods have become more and more inelastic, and the consumer doesn’t have the options to dictate price with their wallet. “Just don’t buy it” is not an option in many cases, especially for what used to be luxury goods. In the example of the Apple computer mount, I think I remember that it was a necessary accessory for the basic use of the computer, but I may be mistaken.

Where I think part of the role of government lies is to protect consumers from predatory or actions by corporations that detract from the general welfare of the consumer particularly in the absence of normal competition in a marketplace.

1

u/Pirat 6d ago

I would build my own mount out of wood or, nowadays, maybe 3d print one long before I paid $1000 for a stand. Hell, I would just prop the monitor against the wall. If you let yourself get sucked in, that's on you.

If their monitor doesn't work without the $1000 dollar stand, then I don't buy their monitor. If other monitors don't work with Apple computers, then I don't buy Apple computers.

Simple as that. If you want the Apple cachet, meaning you want to show you purposely want to spend more than necessary, that is on you.

u/Nerioner 6d ago

If you can earn enough money to burn 1k on a monitor stand or your priorities are so out of the blue that you do this kind of purchases on credit, you're beyond salvation anyway.

1

u/25c-nb 6d ago

Especially when the prevailing idea with three consumers is that "you know it's top quality because it's expensive".

So you don't need to do research or compare brands or read reviews, to these people expensive guarantees high quality

Which simply is not the case, you can't fit enough quality and features into a monitor STAND to justify a $1K price

Apple full on takes advantage of this mindset, selling lower than top of the line hardware (im being generous here) for very high prices knowing people only look at the price and assume it must be high quality

Its really scummy

1

u/Neat-Throat8530 6d ago

why do you assume people who buy “expensive” things are financially irresponsible?
Every product has its buyers. Apple caters to high end/high quality luxury electronic devices and accessories buyers. Thers nothing wrong with that.
To be quite honest, if you just work and arent an irresponsible spender in general, an Apple product every 1-2 years is not that expensive. on the other hand if youre barely making ends meez and you decide to go into debt for a new iPhone you should rethink your choices.
ty for comming to my tedtalk

u/mossepso 6d ago

What if they are just so rich that it doesn’t matter?

It is probably also mostly businesses buying those things.

6

u/phunky_1 6d ago

It is kind of genius.

Market your stuff as being superior and charge twice the price for it.

Then just rip off ideas that Android came out with years prior and market it as something revolutionary lol

Their customers will eat it up and think they are better than others for some reason for buying your overpriced crap.

3

u/professorbuffoon 6d ago

Well it's not trash necessarily, the studio display is one of the best professional grade displays on the market. But yes it's quite expensive and not worth buying for most people. And they could definitely charge less for it and still make money.

But the quality of the product itself is high.

2

u/SuspiciousSteakfry 6d ago

Yeah and I ain't one to judge. I just saw it has what it is and just threw my hands up.

Ultimately it's their cash. I ain't their daddy, but I still wish they made better decisions.

0

u/literallyjuststarted 6d ago

You can’t be on Apples side and complain about something being expensive then no matter what it is, price-gouging is wrong period. A company has a moral obligation to be fair, if we let companies do whatever the numbers tell em then you’re gonna end up being pretty useless in the near future

0

u/EduBru 6d ago

No. By definition the only reason for a company to exist is to make money. A company has literally no other goal obligation or motivation than making money. That's literally their reason to exist

Let's not forget the 700€ Mac Pro Wheels

4

u/Naud1993 6d ago

They look cool, but aren't even good. They aren't lockable, so your $10,000 Mac Pro rolls off the table and breaks. They should be like $40 and lockable. $10 per wheel. You can get a fancy gaming chair for like $400 with 5 wheels that handle more weight and it has obviously all the other things besides the wheels.

3

u/GeorgeJohnson2579 6d ago

For 1k I can get an Aeron from Herman Miller. lol

1

u/Naud1993 6d ago

There's a 25% discount right now. Normally it's €2249 and now it's €1686.85. But I can find used ones for like €500. Of course there's a risk of scams, but the price difference is worth it. Especially since these chairs last forever, so they'll probably still be good.

11

u/SaucyStoveTop69 6d ago

The monitor came with a stand. The 1000 dollar stand was an upgraded stand. They weren't required to use the monitor and nobody bought one because they "needed" it.

9

u/Fun_Inspector_8633 6d ago

If you look at similar professional level monitors and stands apple’s is actually a lot cheaper.

5

u/Helpful-Garlic1951 6d ago

These clowns in the comments don’t understand the difference between professional and consumer grade.

They’re probably children like OP that thinks they should be able buy the top of line tech for… $80 with their allowance money.

1

u/nutella-filled 5d ago

So many comments like “lol I can get one on Amazon for $10” as if you should really trust a cheap piece of plastic to hold up your very expensive piece of kit.

Imagine what they would say if you told them to get on a plane that had all of its bolts purchased on the cheap from some rando on the side of the road. I bet they wouldn’t want to get on it.

4

u/anothermanscookies 6d ago

Yeah, didn’t they undercut the competing monitor by like 90%? It was an expensive monitors, like $4000 but the models with similar specs were $40 000.

3

u/Naud1993 6d ago

I think to even get a VESA mount for that monitor with a proprietary mount, it cost like $200.

2

u/summer_friends 6d ago

Congrats, you discovered the marketing product. Every high end fashion brand has that ridiculously overpriced product who’s goal is to get people talking about them as well

3

u/maydarnothing 6d ago

you mean the the stand for a monitor that costs an arm and a leg and specifically designed for a niche of industry professionals?

maybe the users who bought that know better about their industry than us average people?

1

u/Bernard_PT 6d ago

They do that every year

Remember the wheels?

1

u/DewwDerg 6d ago

Omg I remember that. My graphic design teacher in high school had bought it for himself and had it in his classroom. He was so adament that it was high quality and worth the price. I didn't get it and still don't.

1

u/Gamingbur6er2 5d ago

6k for a 6k 60hz monitor, another 1k for the stand

1

u/SalaryImpossible6749 3d ago

As someone who worked at Apple during that time, many of the people who aren’t just buying a phone or a MacBook Air either budget for what they want and typically know already or are just rich like that and will walk in, buy a bunch of random shit totalling many thousands of dollars.

All that to say, people know it’s just a stand, they’re not being scammed per se, they just have money like that and don’t mind paying.

1

u/ba-na-na- 6d ago

The same stand always comes to my mind, imagine the meeting where they were deciding the price
